Bangkok Offering 15,000 Free WiFi Hotspots

The initial phase however, will see only slow 64K connections designed mainly for checking email or sending text messages.

Better known as one of the thriving sex capitals of the globe, Thailand's capital Bangkok is now all set to go Wi-Fi.

In a pilot project starting today, Bangkok will provide nearly 15,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots for nearly 500,000 people to get online -- as part of the city's drive to cut back on excessive consumption of energy. Officials are hoping that the residents of Bangkok will drive less if electronic communication is made more convenient to use.

The free Wi-Fi service is intended to last at least for one year. The initial phase however, will see only slow 64K connections designed mainly for checking email or sending text messages.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin is reported to have said, "Using information technology for communication with others rather than taking transportation will save energy in crisis period, and for the future. This kind of communication will also be cost-saving and convenient while answering a demand of the new generation."

All residents of Bangkok who wish to access the Wi-Fi hotspots will require a special card; the city has already started distributing free such cards in shopping malls in the run-up to the launch of the service slated for today.
