Says it may pose potential threat to national security
The IMEI-less Chinese phone saga took a new turn yesterday when the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) asked the government to impose a ban on all devices with cloned IMEI numbers.
As most of you might be aware, the 15-digit IMEI number is a legal requirement on all GSM cellphones. Unbranded Chinese handsets, however, do not come with IMEI numbers and in some cases, come with spoofed IMEIs that actually belong to other phones. The ICA is calling for the ban of all such phones, as they possess a serious security threat. The long saga regarding the ban of Chinese cellphones, the unbranded ones has been going on for well over a year now with no resolution in sight The ICA, on November 19, asked the government to ban cell phones with cloned International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number -- a 15-digit code that identifies a mobile phone.
ICA President Pankaj Mohindroo told reporters about the threats presented by such handsets. Mohindroo said, "These sets may pose potential threat to the national security. We find many cell phones with cloned number in the grey market, which mostly sell cheap imported ones."
The ICA has also asked the government to make sure that cellular operators adhere to the November 30 deadline for barring services to all such handsets who are either laden with spoofed IMEIs or do not come with one at all. There are believed to be over 25 million low-quality, IMEI-less Chinese handsets in Indian and their popularity is on the rise, thanks to their low cost and features that compare well with high-end phones from reputed manufacturers.

many times ICA gave the order to close phone which don't have IMEI no. But these operator did not follow the order. It is not understandable that whether the fault is from the operator side or from ICA. i think that the operator give bribe to ICA officers. thats why the date every time extended.
.if a terrorist plan or attack is being done thn they can take as many as 5-10 nokia or samsung mobile haveing IMEI no..n they can get sucess in their plan...i think this is the plan of the big mobile companies as they r suffering heavy lose due to these chinese mobile....as gov is nt getting direct taxes frm them
No arguments here, but how does a buyer verify whether the imei number is genuine or not ? The ICA should provide immiediate verification (upon inserting a sim card) so a user can be assured he is not breaking any laws.
Forget about the knowing the genuinity of IMEI. Dealers don't even allow users to check the quality of phone as it is in sealed box. One has to pay first and then the seal is broken and user has no choice thereafter.
This is like getting salary by warming the chairs. I had complained to TRAI against Vodafone for playing dirty. TRAI did came into the picture and then then closed the case with no response to me. When TRAI has said all ISP must verify the details physically before issueing SIM card why are they not doing it. Please understand even if you ban Phones without IMEI there are smart hackers who can still cheat and go ahead which can be very serious. Hence instead of waiting time of banning TRAI must implement the rule and execute it please. TRAI must take strict action on compaint sent against the ISP's instead of just closing the cases for their ease.
the chinese handsets were performing most of the common functioning and cheap . 3 or 2 sim models and with tv tuning are also available at a most competetive price. when chinese could such improved features for below rs5000, why are branded cellphone manufacturers selling at skyrocketing prices. let them sell to higher class income group. but 85% of indian coomon people csn continue to use the low end chinese 2 and 3 sim phones with tv, even if the branded companies are now intoducing single sim phones at the price of highend chinese phones without the extra features of chinese. let the ima open more outlets to flash new indian imei numbers in all villages through mobile vans for a nominal fee. banning them now is criminal and atrocious.
