BSNL Names '07 Year of Broadband

Techtree News Staff, Dec 22, 2006 1324 hrs IST

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in a New Year bonanza for its customers, has decided to remove the STD barring facility from all landline phones.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in a New Year bonanza for its customers, has decided to remove the STD barring facility from all landline phones.

The company said it would gradually replace old instruments with caller line identification (CLI) facility, and increase the broadband speed and the free download limit.

Over the next 18 months, landline phones would be equipped with the CLI facility. And since the move involved replacing a huge number of phones, the initiative would be conducted in phases. In the mobile segment, location-based service would be launched from January next year.

The broadband speed will be increased from 256 kbps (kilobits per second) to up to 2 mbps (megabits per second) at the existing tariff of Rs 250 per month, from January 1 next year, thus upgrading all its 8.2 lakh broadband users. In addition, the free download limit will be enhanced from 0.4 gigabyte to 1 gigabyte. And the rates for further downloads have been decreased from Rs 1.40 per megabyte to 90 paise.

Announcing the bonanza, A K Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, said that the download limit for business customers would be increased to 4GB, which would mean benefits up to Rs 2,400 a month.

Declaring 2007 as the Year of Broadband, Sinha said that BSNL would extend the service from 600 towns to 1,000, besides giving 50 lakh additional connections. Out of this, 18.4 lakh connections would be provided in the rural areas, and 31.6 lakh in the urban areas.

In rural areas, where broadband connection over copper lines is not possible, BSNL will use Wi-Max technology to offer broadband services.

According to BSNL, plans are in the pipeline to start an online gaming service. Besides, the company has reduced monthly charges for the One India Plan to Rs 1.80 per month, along with 50 free calls.

Also, the STD facility will be offered to 1.2 crore customers without any extra security deposit. The customers will have to inform BSNL if they want to continue with barring of the STD facility.

NO doubt about it that broadband tariff of BSNL is marvellous but it should further minimise the download rates i.e which would be 90 paise per MB should come to 50 paisa.

Hi all friends I also went through same torture from BSNL same frquent disconnections and very hevy billing . Without using broadband for a minute I got a bill of Rs.2602. So its my humble request to all never opt for BSNL products. And those who already are facing the same problem get rid of this pathetic and heavy billed BSNL connection as soon as possible.

Bsnl authorities said while installing my broadband connection in March2008 that I may have usage detail via their website data.bsnl.in. Subsequently they directed us to go to another website http.bbservice.bsnl.in. This website provide usage detail to data one id users only. This webpage is not having any dropdown box to get further link by providing portal id etc. CGM Kolkata being my service provider, I represented the matter trrough a Email, but no response has yet been made at his end. A consuner has the right to information about data usage. What is BSNL's reaction on thousands om similar complaints registered daily through various forum? why bsnl authorities are sitting tight over the matter matter ? What is the wayout ? How a bsnl broadband user can view his usage detail? why bsnl authorities are sitting tight over the matter

2 MB... That is excellent. But why Indian Companies are unable to provide unlimited download service to their customers? why are they paying per mb download prices? I do understand the fact that everyone would not be able to pay that much amount but you should atleast bring this sort of packages to customer where they can choose unlimited download service from BT. And thanks for BSNL to bring 2mg broadband to the customers. Cusomers are facing so many problems with 256kbps speed. System get slow while downloading heavy files or runing heavy sites like cisco which is a grate source to thousands of student in india. I would also request BSNL to bring Braoband services on user mobiles. good luck and best regards

100% cheating by BSNL with users of UL 900. Nor speed upgraded to 2 MB nor rent reduced as is done for 250, 500, 1000 and other higher bracket users. They have been given double benefited of high speed with low rent. Shall the Dept look in to the matter or should we switch over to any other plan?

It is nothing more than a cheating and that too, by Govt of India. What a shame that Govt itself cheating their citizens at the name of Broadband and declaring the year 2007 as year of broadband.Clear Cheating by authorities of BSNL and Govt of India by not providing the 2 MB speed to UL 900 users nor rent has been reduced as is done with 250 and 500 scheme holder .And more to add, now UL 900 customers are getting speed less than 10 kbps and 256 kbps and 2 MB is a dream only.I wrote to the Minister but his Addl. PS replied that my grievances have been forwarded to the concern officer and it is shocking that my Grievances sent to same officers who are denying the quality and quantity to the customers

BSNL is doing buisness in the name of new year. From inside source BSNL is planning to keep the traiff plan like the previous one. Its just a buisness trick to attaractmore customers. But in reality the speed of network will br 256 Kbps in avarage. This is clear from the statement released by BSNL also.

what is airtel broadband upto? will they review their strategy to retain their customers.. If they don't give better speeds and downloads then i am considering to move to bsnl...

by karthick, chennai, on Dec 30, 2006 11:43 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Airtel seems be in fools paradise. They are, perhaps, paralyzed. They seem to ignore the challenge posed by the Public sector BSNL. One thing is for sure, Airtel, by virtue of their indiffernce to their competitor is going to see a mass exodus of their customers. Airtel is going to slowly but surely loose out their broadband customers, if they are incapable of matching the fabulous speed and increased download limit for as low as Rs.250 per month tariff from BSNL. All efforts to contact Airtel customercare on the tariff front has thrown up one thing, they are not ready to match, let alone beat the competitor (BSNL.) Kudos to BSNL for the surprise New Year gift.

by prem, chennai, on Jan 04, 2007 06:45 PM, Report abuse

there is no info from any side, they are trying to overacting, saying even they dont know that BSNL is giving this offer. I dont think so airtel is coming to this kind of offers, I am airtel customer and want to see 1 more month, if they are not changing their mind I will switch over to BSNL.

Open querry to Minister of Telecom Mr Maran, CMD BSNL, Govt of India: For Home 250, it was 400 MB UL/DL with 256 kbps speed, for Home 500, it was 1 GB DL/UL with 256 scheme and for Home 1000, it was 2.5 GB DL/UL with 256 kbps and these all now upgraded . For Home 1000 users they have to pay only Rs 500 with speed enhanced 8 times, mean, 256 to 2MB where as there is not any relief given to UL 900 users, either in rent nor in speed. Shall they reply me, why? Now for UL 900 customers: Shift to Home 500 and get 2.5 GB DL/UL wiht night free and save Rs 400+12.24% tax

Buy CAT5 cables(cross cables). 3. Connect the CAT5 from ur orignial computer(which is USB connected to net) to hub. 4. Now connect all other computer to the hub using CAT5 cables. that shud do it :)

Hmmm....Thats good move by BSNL , 2mbps speed only for 250rs(min.).I have read here people saying why not increasing the speed in Unlimited plans. This is all bogus. What do you expect that they will provide UN 2mbps for only 900rs?I have currently MTNL 1200 Plan with 2gb download but i used 1800 P With 5gb d and speed 512kbps speed same as i have now.Now 900U users are free to download anything that they want but with restricted speeds of 30kb/sec.You want it to be increased to 250kb/sec for free!I bought a limited cap plan because i wanted a speed of 512k.You downlaoders want to have maximum downloads and at the same time want lighting fast speed?what the heck.Either decide what you want - Speed or Download capacity.you can download 1gb in 1.5 hrs only and the whole day you can download loads of gb.The servers will get jammed and obviously BSNL don't wan't it.Secondly i also wanted totell ya guys that BSNL won't provide 2mbps speed at night free hours. What BSNL and MTNL want is More speed with limited downloads and not more speeds with unlimited downloads. That would jam there servers.Other thing i would want to tell all that The gaming service to be started by BSNL will require you to download the game first and then play and the downloads would be free. Its not that You would Stream the game and play like one guy stated.LOL. So enjoy the speeds and the new year!.Dude 2mbps speed is huge!!lol just kidding.

BSNL is an horrible ISP which is completely irresponsible. i have sent them numerous emails regarding slow speeds (Plan 900) but i have received no response yet. the speed of Broadband is slower than Dial up Connection. 256kbps does not provide download speeds of 5kbps properly. this is bare faced looting by BSNL. their service is very poor. TATA's are providing better service Unlimited Downloads per month at Rs 450 at 256kbps.

BSNL is giving true speeds at reasonable price. First U guys learn that 8 bits = 1 byte so they r not cheating anyone. 256kbps means that I can download at 32Kilobytes. 2mbps means 256kilobytes. Its 42Times faster than 48kbps Dial Up Connection. My brother who is living in canada has 512kbps connection for $21. So we r very lucky to have such speed at affordable rates. Currently I have Home500 plan night unlimited, in these 6 hours i can download 5.3GB at 2mbps speed. wake up man!

Nice to see you here man,i also belongs to MOGA.are bhai sari raat jaag jaag kar download karega kya and also from where you download such high data 5.3GB without any break rapidshare or megauploads none of them giving file more then 100mb at a time so what will you do in night.further the highest downloading speed of P2P, rapidshare or megauploads for free users is max of 60-80k so what will you do with 256k of downloading rate at 2MB connection which is also conditional max of 2MB(depends upon distance from local exchange) I am UL900 user and my average data use is near abt 18-24GB for a month. This is true that the speed and service of BSNL in our area is very good.

BSNL sucks.. they have only 2 things in their mind: 1)high speed with limited bandwidth 2)low speed with unlimited bandwidth this is the BSNL's broadband year.. it sucks!!

by Abhishek, Thiruvalla, on Dec 31, 2006 08:41 PM, Report abuse   Reply

It is clear cut cheating with the unlimited plan holders or say UL 900 customers.Either Govt (BSNL) should provide up to 2 MB speed to every customer or otherwise it is fraud to say it the year of Broadband by Duffer and un-educated Minister(Simple Graduate man who do not ,even know, a b c of braodband and is at the mercy of Babu's)

Any net connection with download limit capped is useless.. Its a way to rob customers... Such high speeds will really thrill users & they willl want more content.. but extra downloads will be charged & there goes the fun in broadband....

dude... limit of 1 Gb or 2.5 Gb is hard to cross even if u watch vedios now and then on the net.... and btw the plans from home 500 onwards have free download from 2 to 8AM.... so any files that are to be downloaded can fit in there...

My experience is that the declarations by BSNL remain only in paper and nothing is accomplished. Their services, especially in the rural areas, are very poor standard and the staff over there are not with adequate knowledge of their own plans and operations. They, even the senior officers, have got all the excuses pointing their fingers to their higher offices. I am at Coyalmannam in Palghat District (Kerala) which is a Block Headquarter and BSNL's promise of providing Broadband remain in paper for a long time leaving our expectations in vain. I would request Mr. A.K.Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, to look into this before promulgating fresh plans and offers. Thank you.

Mr. "Techtree News Staff"! Pleas correct the following typo.... "According to BSNL, plans are in the pipeline to start an online gaming service. Besides, the company has reduced monthly charges for the One India Plan to Rs 1.80 per month, along with 50 free calls." It's Rs 180, not Rs 1.80/.

The news in the air is that BSNL shall provide 2 MB speed only to consumers with Rs 250 Plan.Is that right? If yes, what is wrong with those consumers who are paying much on higher schemes like Home 500 and Home UL 900 plans? General Economic Policy is 'more you pay, more you get' but here is the reverse to that . Less you pay more you get and more you pay , less you get. On the one hand, Minister and BSNL is crying year 2007 as year of Broadband but on the other, making injustice to consumers by not allowing 2 MB UL/DL speed to all the consumers,in all plans including Home UL 900. Shall any one from BSNL or public, come forward to clarify this concept, which tantamount to cheating to higher schemes??

This is what i came to know when i called customer care today... # BSNL will offer on all Home and Business Plans data rates up to 2 Mbps, subject to technical feasibility. # The customer wont have to pay any extra charge towards the plans or the already existing hardware setup that is capable of providing such speeds. # The following are the new upgraded plans with higher bandwidths also: Home 250 - 1GB limit, 90 paisa per MB over the limit. Home 500 - 2.5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit. Home 1000 - 5GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit. Home 1800 - 10GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit. Home 3300 - 20GB limit, 70 paisa per MB over the limit. For Home 900 UL plan speed will remain at 256 kpbs Business 700 - 4GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit. Business 1200 - 8GB limit, 80 paisa per MB over the limit. Business 3000 - 20GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit. Business 5000 - 35GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit. Business 9000 - 75GB limit, 50 paisa per MB over the limit. # This change is with effect from Jan 1, 2007.

Hi Friends.I have a query regarding the free STD facility from BSNL.Presently I'm enrolled with BSNL as a general plan customer for landline connection. What exactly are the procedure for acquiring the free STD connection. Will I have to inform the nearest telephone exchange in person? Will there be any changes in the existing tariff rates? It will be great if someone can throw some insight to these questions.

Just write application for providing STD to local SDE(Phones) of BSNL with last payment of your bill copy. There will be no changes in the existing tariff rates .BSNL now giving STD without security of 2000RS with same tariff rates.

ALSO For playing online games like AGE OF EMPIRES we need minimum of bandwidth 2mb for smooth play and approx..250-500 mb data will go in 3 hours game.so we cant even play online games on BSNL broadband in limited plans(due to high data use) in which they are going to give high bandwidth of 2mb.BSNL should reaily think about this as they are also starting online games in future.Age of Empires too.

BSNL what they people are doing...if no upgrade to unlimited plans like home900,unlimited plans users continues to works on 256kbps in 2007..what the hell this is...what is meaning of bandwidth of 2mb for browsing websites only.BSNL should also gave same bandwidth to unlimted plan users too, user with unlimited 900 plan remains still on 256k in 2007 ,such users are also paying more money to BSNL.Think user with paying 250 only will get 2mb speed and the user with 1150Rs in unlimited plans will get only 256kbps.This is 100% reailty the upcoming bandwidth from BSNL in 2007 is not meant for unlimited plan users.

Yes, please dont blindly say bsnl is bad. I know so many people with bsnl broadband fully satisfied. NO OTHER SERVICE PROVIDER GIVES SUCH SPEED. you may get 5-6KB/sec unlimited download from private looooteers. That is different from assured 256kb/sec of BSNL.i think the above comment made against BSNL is grossly wrong and in wrong taste.

We have used private operator's connection earlier and now using BSNL Broadband. BSNL Broadband is 3 times faster than the earlier one. You do not see about the download limit. If you are using the internet only for browsing and minimum downloads means it will give you very high speed as it provides 2 mbps. Because we are surfing in adequate speed even in 256 kbps. BSNL's offer is really a worthy offer! To download huge video and huge data means - you have to go to unlimited plans! For normal browsing and moderate downloads the offered limit and speed is more than enough!

by Shunmuganathan, Trivandrum, on Dec 22, 2006 04:05 PM, Report abuse

Given that few ppl have tested the real broadband barring bsnl ( if it can be called broadband at all), there ire is justified, as they say ignorance is bliss. For the guy who said private operator loooter should first watch his own lingo before accusing me of using words against bsnl in wrong taste and blah blah. I was merely stating the fact and even now firm on this. Given todays bsnl BROADBAND at grand 256 kbps with 400 mb download charged at 250 rs, even at this rate they are charging 400+ rs for a 700MB cd which is LOOOT by any standard in anywhere in world. and talking bout private ISPs, I was using spacenet for last 2 yrs 256 kbps unlimited download for 750 bucks with full 30-32KBPS and currently using hathway at much lower rate than being paid by die hard fans of bsnl.

by abhishek, Mumbai, on Dec 22, 2006 04:13 PM, Report abuse

Well mr abhishek to download 1GB file using 2Mbps ADSL connection is too much faster than 256kbps. Try it. And also in 2Mbps line upload speed is also 512kbps rather 64kbps in 256kbps connection.

I partially agree with Abhishek. What is the point of giving 2Mbps if you are getting the download speed of just over 70kbps?? That's really not true broadband. I think many don't know about this information. For 256kbps, we are getting a mere speed of 32kbps. I download lot of different stuff and I really don't see such a HUGE leap here. Also, offering 1GB limit to all plans. What crap is that???? What is the point of paying 500 and still get the same as 250 plan?? It would have been better if they had just given us more download speeds rather than 2Mbps just for the heck of it.

i feel there is some phone line problem in your case. These are minute things which can be sorted out by your local junior telecom officer. Once your telephone line is working ok, then there will not be any problem with your broadband. Please ask your exchange people to see the line parameters. Another thing is that virus infection of your pc. Then, page cannot be displayed may appear. This happens to me often. So take care. Happy BSNL broadband browsing with 1 MB min speed.

OMG, I recently got a conenction from BSNL disconnected, only 1 reason, their servive suxs, i don't know about speeds and limits, agreed their tariffs are cometitive, but what do u do when u apply for a connection, it gets installed 2 months later and still after a month u are waiting for it to get activated??? Stare at the blank screen and hope some info will flow thru the bsnl wires even after waitin 3 months??? In my case BSNL simple suxs, add to it the govt.'s deptt's ways of doing stuff n after complaining 20 times in a day for 2 months, nuthin happens, even if they start giving 10 mbps unlimited download, i'll still be wary of picking up the connection form next time from the counter. And yeah add to it the 2 weeks i had applied online for the connection and when nuthin happened.

BSNL will win by a huge margin. Because of their last mile connectivity.Their billing is so transparent. So, bye bye private looters

When i have taken broadband conn way back when it's stated i though same about quality. But i found that during this 1.5 yrs there is not a single day it was down or speed is less than indicated. BSNL has gud servies for broadband other than BABUs which comes at your home to installation connection and it's customer care centers.

What will happen to the Unlimited Plans (Plan 900UL)?

Given that few ppl have tested the real broadband barring bsnl ( if it can be called broadband at all), there ire is justified, as they say ignorance is bliss. For the guy who said private operator loooter should first watch his own lingo before accusing me of using words against bsnl in wrong taste and blah blah. I was merely stating the fact and even now firm on this. Given todays bsnl BROADBAND at grand 256 kbps with 400 mb download charged at 250 rs, even at this rate they are charging 400+ rs for a 700MB cd which is LOOOT by any standard in anywhere in world. and talking bout private ISPs, I was using spacenet for last 2 yrs 256 kbps unlimited download for 750 bucks with full 30-32KBPS and currently using hathway at much lower rate than being paid by die hard fans of bsnl.

and as far as Shunmuganathan argument is there, if u dont need to download then why need 2 MBPS at all?? for normal surfing 256 kbps and 2 MBPS will hardly provide any tangible difference to you. And if you are arguing on the basis that u can open 100 of pages simaltenously with 2Mbps then mind that page loading also comes under download count. so, with download limit, 256 is as good as 2 mbps or 100 mbps

in kerala, we have ASIANET DATALINE cable "broadband". it is having better tariff rate than hathway. Even then BSNL broadband DATAONE is preferred over the cable. everybody knows the cable network gets slowed down with increase in number of users. mr abhishek can we know which plan of hathway you are using. how come in hathway website "broadband internet" option, they have given 64kbps and 128kbps plans when TRAI guidelines says that you have to give min 256KBps??.
