Entertainment on demand

State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has marked the beginning of this year by announcing the launch of its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) in Haryana. BSNL has collaborated with Smart Digivision for this initiative.

IPTV is a system that delivers digital content services to subscribers using the Internet protocol over a broadband connection using closed network infrastructure.

The subscribers of BSNL's IPTV services will have access to over 140 television channels and an extensive movie library with Hollywood and Bollywood titles at no extra cost. Additionally, video, music, games and eduction on demand can also be availed.

The company has launched services initially in three cities - Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ambala - and will later take it to the rest of the state. In the first phase, the IPTV service will be launched in 9 cities.

With this move, the company hopes to retain its wireline customers, as they will be required to have a broadband connection for the services, says BSNL's chairman and managing director Kuldeep Goyal.

According to Smart Digivision chairman Mahendra Nahata, the service will attract 4 million subscribers in three years.

I hate being restricted by BSNL. I would rather way TV channels around the world and movies in 1080p Blu-ray on my PC and set top box on MyTVPAL ( www.mytvpal.com ) that's made using Matrixstream ( www.matrixstream.com ) IPTV platform. Michael Dunn
