BODiBEAT: Gym to the Music

BODiBEAT: Gym to the Music

Yamaha's BODiBEAT is touted to be the world's first music player that selects songs to match the pace of the user's workout.

In the past few months we've seen sports-gear manufacturers teaming up with music-gear makers to come up with products that ensure you're never away from your gym buddy (read: a music player), and that you have fun while working out. Now Yamaha has introduced a similar product, called BODiBEAT, which claims to be the world's first music player that selects songs to match the pace of the user's workout.

Positioned as a total workout tracking and personal music solution, BODiBEAT automatically syncs music selections with the steps of the user's walk or run. The unit includes a heart rate monitor.

It lets users specify times, distances or calorie targets to help structure their sessions. When the target has been reached, the music automatically stops to alert them that the workout is over; users can manually change the tempo as well. At the end of an exercise session, a user is presented with a log of the session providing information such as average pace, calories burnt, and maximum heart rate.

BODiBEAT comes with four main operating modes - Free, Fitness, Training, and Music - which are meant to automatically match the music to the exercise pace. The Music mode allows BODiBEAT to be used as a plain vanilla portable audio player.

The product comes bundled with BODiBEAT Station, software that automatically categorizes each downloaded song by beats per minute (bpm), and a small heart rate monitor that can be clipped gently onto the user's ear. Designed to maximize fitness activities such as running, walking and dancing, BODiBEAT also tracks the metrics of these workouts, including distance, time, pace, and heart rate.

It also includes an armband and features 512 megabytes of skip-free internal flash memory, and claims to offer approximately 12 hours of playback when fully charged.

BODiBEAT is available in select markets for a suggested retail price of $299.99.
