Gets more than a million followers
Even Hollywood celebrities have been smitten by Twitter's glittering and evolving world. Actor Ashton Kutcher and now a Web 2.0 enthusiast outperformed media-giant CNN in the cold battle to get one million followers.
Kutcher's Twitter handle "http://twitter.com/aplusk" @aplusk had managed to get more than one million followers earlier today before CNN did. This all started earlier this week when Kutcher found out that he had as many followers as CNN.
In his victory speech, Kutcher said, "We can and will create our media. We can and will broadcast our media. We can and will censor our own media ourselves. We are over a million." A friendly race to get one million got all spiced up when Kutcher put up a live stream that continuously engaged conversation with his followers.
Kutcher has promised to donate 10,000 mosquito nets if he won. And when he won he showed up a donation check for 100,000 dollars to be donated to the "Malaria No More"' fund. His next mission is to fight against human trafficking. And not surprisingly, there wasn't any 'Unfollow' option for those who were already following him on Twitter.
This bizarre battle between TV and web amused many and in the end web won over TV. Kutcher is one of the many celebrities who are registered members of Twitter.
Few celebs are believed to have hired public relation and branding professionals to maintain the public images. But many personalities like Kutcher have been actively using the micro-blogging site for interacting with the member audience.
Kutcher's friendly victory has display the power of new media - web. The bubble of dot com which burst in late nineties has slowly and gradually started inflating. Best examples are Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook and thousands of other niche sites.
