Apple iPod to Get Volume Control

The move is tantamount to Apple acknowledging the risk its iPod poses to the human sense of hearing.
Afraid that fans of its iPod may eventually end-up damaging their ear-drums, Apple Computer has filed a patent for a version of iPod featuring an automatic volume control, which calculates for how long- and at what volume- a person has been listening-in before bringing down the volume to a level it deems safe for hearing.
The move is tantamount to Apple finally acknowledging the risk its iconic device poses to the human sense of hearing. Which is what experts and researchers have been warning against -- how millions of people across the globe are risking irreversible damage to their hearing, thanks to their craze for MP3 players, with Apple's iPod at the top of the heap.
According to the patent filed by Apple, the automatic volume control will also calculate the amount of 'me time' between when an iPod is turned-off and when it is turned-on back again.
Last year, there was a lot of brouhaha after a Louisiana man filed a class-action suit against Apple, saying that the company had failed to take necessary steps to prevent hearing loss amongst iPod users.
In an attempt to quieten the song and dance over hazards posed by its iPod, Apple at the time, had released a free software update that claimed to allow iPod listeners set maximum volume limits.
