Apple Utility for iPod Shuffle Repair

Apple Computer has released a software utility for its first-generation iPod Shuffle digital music players, which addresses several issues that are being experienced by users in connection with these devices.

The company said the software utility, called "Reset Utility version 1.0," restores iPod Shuffles by completely erasing all music and data on players, and then reinstalling software version 1.1.4. Apple hence advises users to take a back-up of their entire content before making use of the utility.

The utility is designed to work only with first-generation 512MB or 1GB iPod Shuffles; it requires Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later; and it is available as a 2.1MB free download from Apple's Web site.

The Reset Utility fixes those Shuffles that are recognized only on Macs in Apple System Profiler under USB Hardware, and that fail to appear or mount in the Finder, thereby ensuring these Shuffles are recognized when attempting to restore the software.

Those iPod Shuffles that fail during the restore process, showing errors such as "Firmware update failure. Disk write error" also stand to be repaired by the Reset utility, even if they take several minutes to be recognized.

The utility also fixes issues wherein the iPod appears in My Computer on Windows systems as a "Removable Disk" but fails to mount correctly.

All that the new utility requires is an admin user password. It does not need users to restore the Shuffle a second time after using it.

Meanwhile, Apple says that the new utility might help users solve issues related to inability to play music, or to sync with Apple's online store iTunes.
