Apple Patents New System For Cool Notebooks

Passive and active cooling system in the making

With the computing capabilities crammed into today's notebooks increasing steadily, cooling mechanisms of the future have to ensure that these devices fare well on the longevity and reliability front as well.

However, as faster processors and meaner graphics cards arrive, notebooks are bound by one limitation: space. Notebooks will always remain portable, and for portability, they have to be compact. This is where manufacturers of notebooks and its components tread the fine line when they choose the optimum cooling solutions to ensure that your lap does not end up getting burnt - at the same time providing you with a laptop that performs well.

With current cooling mechanisms set to be inadequate for quad core processors and with faster video cards on the anvil, Apple has decided to patent a new cooling technology, which it plans to implement in its future Macbooks. A passive and active cooling system is in the making - both aimed at bringing the operating temperatures of the notebooks down to optimal levels.

The first method involves an active coolant that is forced to pass over the "affected" circuits along an intricate network of cooling pipes. It will integrate a pump and drivers in the system, and the coolant will be made to shift between gaseous and liquid states as required. Heat would eventually dissipate through fin stacks.

The other method also involves pipes, but minus the active coolant. This method would feature a passive heat sink bundled with a standard cooling mechanism. Heat, in this case, will dissipate from the aluminium plate located behind the laptop display - instead of the base or the sides, which is usually the case.

It remains to be seen when these technologies will finally make it to the Macbook lineup.
