Apple Concedes MacBook Graphics Issues

Apple forums agog with complaints

Apple seems to have released the beta version of its new line of MacBooks. Every second week there is a complaint about one of its components, followed by an announcement of a patch update to fix the problem.

After the recent cracks and trackpad issues, now there are people lamenting about the 'Black Screen of Death', as some are calling it, in Apple forums and the MacBook manufacturer has acknowledged the problem, reports Apple Insider.

Users state that their screens go black after just a few minutes of gaming, followed by the system locking up and the audio entering into an infinite loop. This leaves users with no option but to restart their machines, and, in turn, losing all unsaved files. This issue is affecting game titles including Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire III, Command and Conquer, Oblivion, Company of Heroes, among others.

The other issue that MacBooks and MacBook Pro owners are reporting is of 'wave-like video distortions' while scrolling in Web browsers of viewing HD content. Users say that this issue is common on most systems on display at Apple retail stores. Also observed is that the distortions are not present while running Windows. This may suggest that this may be a Mac-specific NVIDIA driver issue.

Apple is reportedly working on fixing these issues in its future software updates.

ANY Rev.A Mac is a beta machine. Buggy hardware, drivers and missing features (FireWire) are typical. ie: FireWire 800 was left out of the first MacBook Pro, only to appear in Rev.B. I always buy the LAST version of a Mac when there's a major redesign and wait for at least the Rev.B or Rev.C of redesigned machines. It IS tempting to buy the latest and flashiest machine, but I WILL NOT PAY to be a beta tester!
