Aldebaran Nao: Fully Programmable

Humanoid robot to make its public debut in 2010

Aldebaran Robotics, a French firm with interests in robotics, has been a favorite over the last couple of years at the annual Robocup Challenge - a soccer tournament for humanoid robots. While Sony's Aibo used to be the standard platform competition till last year, this time round it has been replaced by Aldebaran's Nao, a small humanoid robot developed by them.

The Nao happens to be a fully customizable (read: programmable) robot with some unique features. It packs in an AMD Geocode 500Mhz CPU inside its tiny frame and with it 1GB of flash memory, stereo speakers, and 256MB of SDRAM. Moreover, the Ethernet and wi-fi connectivity option enable Nao to go "online" when the owner wants him to.

Additionally, if you thought all Nao does is walk, tilt his head and say a few monosyllables, you have got it wrong my friend. Remember I said this guy is customizable? What this essentially means is that you can chose to program Nao yourselves if you have the tools or the expertise to do so.

The Nao can be programmed in a graphical as well as a code environment. He also possesses limbs with 25 degrees of freedom, voice recognition/synthesis and stereoscopic vision.

Unlike Aibo, however, Nao is not up for grabs yet - for the public. Currently, only available for research purposes, the Nao is scheduled to make its public debut some time in 2010 when it will be priced at USD 12,000 - virtually making it a rich man's toy. The newer version of the Nao will have "consumer friendly" features and other added functionalities at that time.

Here's a video of Nao at work:
