Airtel Network Down In Mumbai

Airtel subscribers have been unable to make any calls due to a network issue caused by a short circuit in the Airtel building at Lower Parel, Mumbai.

Airtel subscribers in Mumbai have been left in the lurch since morning, with their mobile phones flashing the "Emergency Calls Only" message, leaving them with no network to make calls. According to Airtel, this network issue is the result of a short circuit in the Airtel building at Lower Parel.
Only minutes ago, we received an official statement from Airtel saying, "There has been a fire at Peninsula Chambers, Lower Parel, Mumbai, in the facility area of the building due to a short circuit in the power cables that belong to the power supplier. This has resulted in a temporary disruption in power supply, which has impacted our network services in some areas of Mumbai. However, we are confident of restoring the situation to normalcy soon."
According to Airtel officials, this problem exists only in some areas of South Mumbai and certain suburbs. The service is available in other parts of Mumbai, as well as Navi Mumbai. It's difficult to estimate how much longer the network issue would last with the information available at present. Watch this space for updates.

This is simple nonsense from airtel, today is 23rd July...still no outgoing near andheri kurla road, chakala, saki nakka. When you dial a number (if STD), it says invalid number...bye bye airtel..I will never recommend anyone also to take airtel connection. It is really disgusting!!!

Bullish Airtel, nothing is done until now 2 days no service, such a hopeless customer care service, cant even dial to 121 number. Media should publish something like Breaking news "Airtel Service Down" instead of publishing "Amitab ko sardi lagi" etc etc.

Infact i was just telling Bindu that these newspapers are no less they are publishing the fite that happened between Salman and SRK on the front page of Mid Day and on the second page they put the article of Airtel network failure at the bottom . Airtel Mumbai - its the worst network... readers pls ask your relatives and friends who come for vacations to use any other service provider. Airtel website states that they have restored the connection within two days....but even after 10 days, connection has gone wayward. They are mis-leading the customers with false information. CUSTOMER CARE IS ALSO NOT AVAILABLE!!!!!

But I cant understand why the service from other areas than mumbai i.e. rest of maharashtra is down?????? Because the IN department which handles all this is diff for mumbai region from maharashtra. The problem is not only in mumbai. I am from Pune and still faced that problem. Yet cant make calls to Mumbai friends. One more thing is that Post paid customers have no problem at all. I can call to mumbai friend from postpaid card in single try.

Airtel Network users have access to Hutch. But the catch is that they are being charged for it.. even incoming is charged.. I guess Airtel should have atleast informed the people of the issue and must bear all the inconvenience charges borne by its customers. They should not be charging anything extra than the user plans charges.. Hope to see some improvement soon..

Really ridiculous. Even though i belive airtel can provide best service..but I have seen many of most of frnds using airtel. But it looks many times that the decision I made to stay on other network was right. I never faced any issue during this service. Still the issue is not resolved and its Tuesday 22 July 2008. most of all mobiles are unable to reach on 2-3 tries in pune/mumbai

What the hell these pigs are doing ? These pigs have issued a statement that 90% of the network has been restored . But what about the balance 10 % which is causing 90 % of the problem . This media is also hand in glove with the company . All are manipulators . I am thinking of swithching to Vodafone . Airtel cant even create a back up server . And its thinking of acquiring MTN... DUHhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Airtel - as the word suggests , throw your cell phone in the air .....i Think its gonna take these maniacs weeks to restore the services to normalcy . No Operator in India is geared up for such kind of disastrous situation.If this would have happened with any other operator, they would have met with same dilema as how to restore the n/w.And bear in Mind Airtel is having strong footprint across india, so they are able to restore services due to this strong networking by re-routing the traffic.

I'm a frequent traveler to Pune and I really heavily on my mobile phone network, like millions of others in India. It is 21st July 2008, 8PM. Airtel network is STILL DOWN. No official statement from the company. Customer service numbers are non-reachable. This is a disgrace. I am opting for VODAFONE from what I hear from people, they have a great service and reliable backup services. Airtel, what a shame. Really. This is the third day running that I have no network at all from Airtel. In Prabhadevi, it is absolutely the pits. I have made 3 complaints today, but the issue has not still been addressed. This creates a lot of inconvenience, which the service provider needs to understand. Possibly, they have grown too large for a few customers to matter to them !!

This is very unprofessional behavior by Airtel. All they care about is their money and their profits, whether a 'minor' or a major glitch, a company of that size should have fool-proof backup procedures in place. Its a disgrace.

guess what..they have charged 150 rs for these 2 days..wen i cudnt make calls.. yeah the called showed connected but then the call ended and now if they r charging for that...its extremely disgusting.. I live in ghatkopar and wen i enter chembur, my airtel starts working.. I spent nearly an hour in chembur on the road jus to get the connectivity..

Hi Gwendoline, Airtel's n/w is down due the major fire tht broke in Parel due to short ciruit. Most of the network & Telecom devices were damaged due to fire & later by the water used by firefighters to extinguish the fire. It is learnt that one of theor MSC's was burnt ... so they are trying to delete the subsciber database (more than 7lacs.) from Parel HLR and create it on HLR from other locations. This will take some time and they have restored 90% connectivity. This is a natural disaster and the engineers are trying their level best to restore the connectivity @ the earliest.

Hey Mr. Nirav Thakker, Tks for being suportive towards Airtel but in vain as per ur statement "80% of Airtel network will be restored by 7pm, and 100% by 11.pm to nite.Request all to be patient and supprt Airtel in such a disatrous situation " its 11.48 pm now my time and the network has not been restored so now wht u have to say ? u have to understand one thing dear people's businesses are being held up coz they cannot contact their clients. I knw of shipping companies that take corporate connections from Airtel/hutch and they main work is done via mobile specially those in the marketing section wht will they do ? Who will pay them for their losses ? Its no one's fault . Its not Airtel's fault for tht accident of fire but then they should have taken the initiative to have some back up . Moreover they should atleast try and reach their customers and assure them abt the network leave alone calling their customers they are not even available when the customers call them . THIS IS UTTER NONSENCE & FULLY RUBBISH, I dont know what the managing heads are doing? Have they ever thought of such scenario? If yes, have they ever made ant backup plan? I am using this service for lat 3 years, I have faced such situation in past also. So just a simple message to great BHARTI team, "dont sit idle with what ever you are having, do something new and try to run your brains, try to think in the case of such worse scenario for future". To Bharti CEO : Please ask your managers about todays revenue which would come to your company and what your company has lost!! Please give detail in press conference if it happens!!

Trust me Bindu m having the same prob. Been calling them up since last nite and all i keep hearing is some ads and then they say if u want to speak with our customer care please press 9 and when i do tht it rings and then disconnects . Its so damn frustrating . M trying to make calls to my guy in saudi but in vain it says network failure .Dunno when they are gonna solve the prob and why is it not in the news . Another thing so funny or annoying is in Mid day they put Salman and SRK's fite as front page which is of no use to the people and they put the news abt the Airtel network failure on the secon page right at the bottom . I am the airtel customer, and in to the marketing profession. It?s really frustrating to because i am not able receive any business calls the whole day.I am in Kerla right now, and facing hale lot of problem due to this. Its alreday evening of second day, still they are not able to resolve the problem. And i am not getting any stisfactory reply from service provider also.

Airtel's servers are down, last I heard. What I fail to understand is, if the production servers are down, why hasn't the network been brought up through the back-ups or through the DR's? Is it that Airtels back-ups are faulty or not at all present there? Such service is pathetic.

I hope all the other Mobile services are alerted and taking this issue as a good lesson and hope they have back up . God forbid if anything like this happens with Vodafone,MTNL,Reliance,idea etc then they are able to provide services to their customers . BTW any update people on Airtel Network restoration?

there is no news abt the airtel in any news channel , paper. network is down from 18th morning and till now no news abt when it will be up. On Airtel website the number provided for customer care also not working. Looks like this people r fooling us. No network in Pune also.

hopeless N/W and service provider, company people even dont know when the service will be up again, I dont knpw why they make such a big adds like "Showing the connectivity inside the jungle" when the connectivity is not thier even in city places.

i agree with you...infact i strongly believe - airtel have a moral responsibility to compensate for the disruption caused...it would just not be a 1 or 2 days rental fee waiver. Short circuit at airtel is their own problem and cannot be taken as a natural calamity. I hope they don?t give us any of those ridiculous reasons like they do every time. Pity on the customer care dept...they have a lot of talking to do once their network is restored.

The real reason for the network problem is not the short circuit, the telecommunication towers are outside all over the city. The real reason is that in this short circuit it seems that Airtel has lost its billing system capabilities both prepaid and postpaid and hence they had no choice but to down the network or if they dont down the network they will incur crores of losses. But the biggest blunder is that the company officials are not coming out with any official statement, which means there is something wrong that the company is doing. Shame on such a public listed companies behaviour...user & investor confidence shall be at an all time low. After all Sunil Mittal ek business man hai and cannot behave professionally is proved

hey u r right ...ther is problem in their billing system...u kno wht, i hav one extra airtel card which i dnt use and had some rs. 10 balance in it and one year validity....throught the day i have made several calls to STD nos as well as local....though its a mumbai card...if u get the maharashtra circle network, bu goin to places outskirts of mumbai city i.e vasai from western ...u can make unlimited calls....i have looted airtel very well ....and i dnt feel bad as i still remmeber whn i was a student studying in college airtel had once deducted my rs. 120.....so guys make the most of it..if u can..

Well this is not true and somebody is trying to spread a disinformation campaign here.Billing is handled by IBM and hence the loss of "billing capabilities" is just not correct. The truth is that there has indeed been a major fire at the premises and the core systems have been badly affected. However to take care of customer calls , one can latch on to other local networks and make your calls. This has been facilitated by airtel till the time the n/w is restored. Please try logging into vodafone and check if you can make calls. Regarding Shame and stuff, Please be ashamed of yourself before making such baseless comments and misleading other people.

I have been using Airtel for about 5 years till this time I have not come across any issues, there were few but negligible one. But I fail to understand that company like Airtel do not any type of back-up solution for power. No issues there is a problem lets help Airtel to solve the same rather then changing the service. Even other service provider have failed many times and have left bad taste with their service & reply.

Airtel should have had the conviction to come forward and let its user know about the non availability of service , why could they not issue a small press release and inform the media ? . After all its the same company which advertises 100 times a day when they launch a small new service feature like money transfer via cell , but when it comes to the complete nonworking of cellphone due to fire in their building ,they pretend like the ignorant monkeys !

Airtel network is very bad in Mumbai. Get on a flyover or a bridge and the network is gone. In our area in Powai, there is hardly any network above the 10th floor....It is really a shame for a company of this magnitude to have such poor standards....We actually have a corporate connection with Airtel and last week we dediced to phase it out and opt for an alternate service provider. I am sure this problem has caught them in the pit but adequate backup plans should be in place for such a calamatous situation..very poor Airtel..It takes only a single instance to lose a reputation that is built over years of hard work..and sorry to say...you really lost that today....

If there was a fire in Mumbai and only 'some customers' have been affected. I've been an Airtel mobile subscriber since 2002 (bangalore & mumbai). I've also extensively used their broadband service in Bangalore. Several of my colleagues and family members too are airtel loyalists. I'm surprised that Airtel was caught totally unprepared to face a crisis like today's and I've actually had to suffer with no network all of today.

hmmm... fire... seems unlikely. but neywas.. as for ppl who are switchin to vodafone... vodafone is prbly as bad as mtnl rite now. ive never faced ne problems with airtel except today. the networks flawless. :) .. i only hope they include some new features such as PTT and recording custom caller tunes.

It's a shame that India's largest network would be helpless for a whole working day, and unable to reconnect the subscribers, a lot of whom depend completely on their cellphones to stay in touch with their families, and most of whom depend totally on the cellphones for their work
