Airtel Debuts in Orissa

Bharti Cellular has launched its GSM services in Orissa, the first of 12 states in the east where it plans to start its services.
Telecom conglomerate Bharti Cellular has launched its Airtel mobile services in Orissa, making it the 20th circle where Airtel is available. It claims to be the first private cellular provider in the state.
Airtel's coverage in the state spreads over 1,200 km. of highway and rail routes. It will be available in over 100 towns within the state on 140 cell sites. Some of the key towns where Airtel will be launching its services include Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Balasore, Rourkela, Puri, Angul & Berhampore.
Airtel's prepaid service in Orissa will have local outgoing calls at Rs 1 per minute, Airtel to Airtel STD calls at Rs 2 per minute, local SMS at 30 paise, and a prepaid start-up kit of Rs 150 with pre-loaded talk time of Rs 50. Recharges of Rs 230 and above will have full talk time.
The reduced rates for local calls are at a monthly charge of Rs 30, which is being waived for customers who join the network before January 15, 2005. Local SMS rates at 30 paise per outgoing SMS is also till January 31, 2005, as a promotional offer.
Apart form value-added services like Airtel Live, Hello Tunes and Easy Charge, the company will also offer a special plan for the hearing impaired called Confidence Plan.
Airtel plans to launch its services across eastern India, touching the lives of 260 million people in 12 states. It launched its services in the West Bengal circle in October 2004. It will be launching its services in Bihar and Jharkhand in January 2005 and in Assam and other northeastern states by March 2005.
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman & Group Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises, said, "The eastern region of the country including Orissa has a huge potential for improvement in mobile penetration, which in turn would trigger an overall growth of the economy. The launch of Airtel in Orissa would go a long way in establishing these objectives and it is my proud privilege to launch Airtel in this historic and culturally rich region of the country."
It also commissioned a GPRS-enabled network and promised investments of more than Rs 100 crore by March 2005.
The Confidence Plan has benefits such as 2,500 free Airtel-to-Airtel SMS within the local network along with the facility to send SMS to other local, national and international networks. Users of Confidence Plan would also have the advantage of accessing all the SMS-based VAS services of Airtel.
To encourage the adoption of the confidence plan amongst the hearing impaired, Airtel is keeping the monthly rental at Rs 99, with a one-time activation charge of Rs 250.
