Aircel to have Pan-India Footprint

Aircel to have Pan-India Footprint

Techtree News Staff, May 05, 2008 1857 hrs IST

Aircel holds license and spectrum for service roll-out in all 23 telecom circles in the country, of which Kolkata has been the tenth and latest addition.

GSM operator Aircel, which is 74 percent owned by Malaysia-based Maxis Communications and 26 percent by our very own Apollo Hospitals will launch operations across the country, and to this effect will invest up to five billion dollars by 2010, the company said.

Aircel holds license and spectrum for service roll-out in all 23 telecom circles in the country, of which Kolkata has been the tenth and latest addition -- effectively completing Aircel's eastern region footprint. Apparently, the company has 13 more circles to cover to have a pan-India presence.

The mobile operator already boasts a total subscriber base of 10.8 million, and a market share of 18.2 percent; it is optimistic on the Kolkata circle as mobile penetration is lowest in that city among all metro circles. Statistically speaking, the penetration in Kolkata is 45 percent while in Delhi it is 105 percent, Mumbai 93 percent, and Chennai 87 percent.

The mobile operator already boasts a total subscriber base of 10.8 million, and a market share of 18.2 percent; well those are wrong figures considering Airtel has 65 Million subscribers and a base of just 24%
