A 56-inch set with intriguing tech but where is the content?
Philips has unveiled a 56-inch prototype of the Quad Full Autostereoscopic 3D HDTV panel. Apart from being a mouthful, the tech can display 3D images based on proprietary 3D WoW Technology. For displaying a 3D image, the HDTV uses a high-speed data delivery system and resolution that is four times higher than regular television. This is an important requirement since high-quality images are a result of high-resolution support and data-speed.
The 3D HDTV offers 3840x2160 screen resolution, four times that of a standard HDTV resolution; the source of its 'quad' moniker. In case you are wondering, the 3D WoW technology doesn't use any glasses for mapping the 3D images to our visual senses.
Though aimed at the consumers, there is a lack of content available for such screens. Which is probably a reason why Philips chose to unveil the HDTV in Hollywood, hoping perhaps to convince a few producers to consider their tech for future projects...
Then again, at $25,000, they were perhaps hoping to sell one to said producers.
The Philips set promises a 160-degree viewing angle with 46 views at once and a 'high contrast ratio', which wasn't specified.
