AMD Unveils 45nm Shanghai Chips

35% faster and consumes up to 35% less power
AMD announced the arrival of their 45nm processor chips, dubbed as Shanghai. These Quad-core AMD Opteron processors are now 35% faster with up to 35% less power consumption at idle mode.
Shanghai is a respun 65nm Barcelona chip on 45nm fabrication technology with more power and L3 cache. It now carries 6MB of L3 cache, improved virtualization performance, Smart Fetch technology for power save and clock speeds running from 2.3GHz to 2.7GHz.
AMD has also added DDR2-800 support to the mix while the HyperTransport 3.0 technology that will give up to 17.6GB/s of bandwidth for processor-to-processor communications is planned for next year's Shanghai chips.
The latest Opteron processors include 75-watt parts and are readily available, starting from $377 for 2.3GHz to $989 for the 2.7GHz chip. The enhanced Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE (55-watt) and SE (105-watt) processors are planned to come in Q1 2009.
