AMD Rolls Out eXternal Graphics Platform

At last week's "Computex 2008" held in Taiwan, AMD not only showcased its "Puma platform" but also proposed its "eXternal Graphics platform" (XGP) meant for laptops that require more graphics processing power.

Fujitsu Siemens demonstrated its "Amilo Graphics Booster" based on AMD's XGP platform. The "Amilo Graphics Booster" shares a close resemblance with Apple TV, and features AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU, 512MB GDDR3 memory, and the capability to support four displays at one time.

AMD's XGP platform is meant for owners of slim-and-light laptops looking for more graphics horsepower. Graphics processing requirements can be served with GPU in a small form factor XGP box, however, XGP's own PCI Express 2.0-based connector requires a special XGP slot.

Until such a time XGP is adopted en masse by all laptop manufacturers and vendors, it would continue to sound like a prototype. The connector too needs to be approved as a true standard before XGP becomes popular commercially.
