AMD Roadmap Points to a 12-Core Beast

Techtree News Staff, Jul 17, 2008 0758 hrs IST

A new socket to support DDR3 technology, and 12-core processors with 12MB L3 cache planned

AMD's latest roadmap continues the core push on the processor front. It also reveals a shift come 2010, when the company will adapt its current offerings to support DDR3 technology. The roadmap also traces AMD's 45nm intentions: a 45nm processor die-shrink of Barcelona, code-named Shanghai, is expected to ship late this year. Down the line AMD is planning two future parts built on 45nm -- the first of which, code-named Sao Paolo, will be an eight-core derivate of the Shanghai processer, a "twin native quad-core processor". Sao Paolo will also be the first processor to be built for AMD's new socket, dubbed G34.

The roadmap also points to a 12-core behemoth, code-named Magny-Cours (after the French town made famous by its Formula One French Grand Prix circuit, but also, we imagine, for its pun-effect). Shanghai and Magny-Cours are expected to feature four HyperTransport 3 interconnects, 12MB of L3 cache and 512kb cache per core.
