AMD Phenom II X4 Overclocked to over 5GHz

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has been showing off their 45nm "Deneb" Phenom II quad-core processors to select media journalists. As reported, the Deneb processors can be overclocked to over 5GHz if you have storage of liquid nitrogen. However, with the help of air cooling, Deneb processors achieved a frequency of 4GHz and 5GHz over dry ice cooling.
The chipmaker states that new architectural improvements in the new Phenom II chips featuring 700 million transistors adds extra potential for overclocking compared to original Phenom chips released in late 2007.
Intel's recently released Core i7 processors are said to be overclocked to 4.5GHz on air cooling alone and it's claimed to reach 5.7 on liquid nitrogen cooling.
AMD had a variety of setups for the media to show off Phenom II's extra level headroom for overclocking with setups like air cooling, water/TEC cooling, Phase change cooling and liquid nitrogen cooling. The temperature change-sensitive Phenom II chips often got negative scaling in overclocking once sub-zero was achieved. The overclocking performance ranged well over 5GHz on the liquid nitrogen system.
Technically-speaking, the Phenom II chips with heatsink and fan managed less than 4GHz with 1.55v core voltage. However, with liquid cooling the Phenom II's frequency crossed 4GHz by adding 1.6V to the CPU voltage. Rig with phase change cooling system managed to mid-4GHz clock frequency overclocking. While the system with liquid nitrogen cooling was able to overclock Phenom II X4 processor to over 5GHz.
AMD claims that their design works perfectly between -200 degree C to +100 degree C temperature range. Keeping the Thermal Design Power down, AMD is pushing their new headroom feature to appeal to gamers and enthusiasts. The demos were showon on AMD's upcoming Dragon desktop platform that features Phenom II quad-core processors, which is planned to be launched at CES 2009 and the same was confirmed by AMD's spokesperson John Taylor.
The PC Perspective stated that the Phenom II reached WELL over 5.xGHz (read: REALLY over) at 1.9v CPU voltage over liquid nitrogen system.
