AMD Opteron Ready for Launch

AMD Opteron Ready for Launch

Techtree News Staff, Mar 03, 2008 1416 hrs IST

AMD's quad-core Opteron chip (previously codenamed "Barcelona") for servers is ready for launch.

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has announced that its quad-core Opteron chip (previously codenamed "Barcelona") for servers is ready for launch. The company will start shipping the B3 version of the chip to channel and distribution partners this week.

Earlier, a 2007 release was announced for the quad-core chip but due to a bug discovered in the chip before its launch, the B2 version was distributed only to a select high-performance computing market. The company declared a 2008 release last December. And now that the bug problem is said to have been solved, AMD will start pushing out its product to a wider audience.

It is learnt that system vendors like Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP) will be adopting AMD's quad-core chip. The chip will be integrated in their upcoming servers to be made available in the second quarter of this year. HP s upcoming ProLiant DL585 will be using the processor.

The Opteron is AMD's first quad-core chip for servers; Intel being the first to introduce its quad-core chip for servers in 2006. Intel implemented the method of putting two dual-core chips together to create its quad-core chip. AMD, on the other hand, has integrated all four cores onto a single chip.

AMD has been long way ahead of Intel in terms of innovation. But intel has caught up well. Lets see what comes out of the AMD stable next

Dude, in case you missed reading the article, it says AMD has finally launced a quad core now, when INTEL did it in 2004.

AMD. Way to go. All the innovations will pay back and benefit the consumers.

are you crazy AMD is way below Intel right now; I don't even think their Opteron can defeat any Intel processor in the market right now

There is no disputing that Intelchips are now faster than AMD but what are you going to do with a fast chip. The CPU is supposed to be idle most of the time. Ok I am not really bothered about the gamers. They are too few in India. What AMD offers you is greater performance at much lesser price and Intel throws just funny ads at you.

I dont think AMD will be going bankrupt, may be it will go for a merger or A good suggestion let NVIDIA Buy AMD & ATI which will make Nvidia a world & a Sole leader in Graphics card and even AMD will really pitch the market. -------- SETHIA INFOTECH

AMD has nowhere to go right now. Intel is wiping the floor with them, Nvidia has GPU's locked, and Intel is releasing their version of a integrated memory controller this year. AMD is either going bankrupt or going to merger.

Intel may have been the first, but that does not mean they are the best. The last line of this artice proves that AMD is more innovative! They were the first to integrate all 4 cores onto a sicngle chip. Better performance, Less chips, less cost = more profit AMD will return to profit in the next quarter STRONG BUY Also, AMD could be bought at a 50-60%premium at any moment, but shareholders would probably resist due tot he stock is way undervalued currently! JMHO, do your own DD. Cheers

Barcelona Opteron can get close in the memory/BW intensive benchmarks, but on the whole... AMD's fastest quad is inferior to what Intel can offer... AMD has priced it accordingly. Intel has the cost advantage, AMD's quads are 70 mm^2 larger than the Intel 45 nm quads, Intel also should return higher yields since they can match duals to make a quad, one defect AMD looses the quad to a triple core. They are really in a no-win situation.

Correction: Relaunched Barcelona, AMD launched Barcelona to much fan fare on Sept 12, 2007 only for it to never show up.
