60 Indians Selected for GSC Program

According to an IANS report, sixty Indian youngsters have been selected at the prestigious Google Summer of Code competition.
According to an IANS report, sixty Indian youngsters have been selected at the prestigious Google Summer of Code competition.
First held in 2005, the Google Summer of Code is an annual program that awards cash prizes to students who successfully complete a free software or open-source coding project.
Reportedly, this year, from a host of around 6,200 applications, 900 students have been selected for the prestigious award, out of which sixty are Indians.
One of the selected participants, Prekshu Ajmera, who is in his fourth year of dual-degree Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, said his main motivation for taking part in this program was to improve on coding skills and get familiar with what people actually do in the open source world. The other motivating factor, was the 'handsome stipend' Google offers.
Although Ajmera submitted more than one application, the main topic on which he worked was not selected. However, he was fortunate to get selected for another topic on which he had done enough groundwork.
For the past two years now, the Google Summer of Code has been having Indian mentors. This year, they had Baiju M and Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay from Red Hat.
Aishampayan Ghose, a student who participated in the Google Summer of Code, praised his mentor for helping and supporting him in terms of testing.
Ghose worked on the Ubuntu Project, to create an off-line update tool, so that people with disconnected PCs can also fetch updates for themselves. Ghose considers this program a great initiative that could help get the best brains together...
