Twitter, a popular microblogging site, is continuing its phenomenal growth trajectory. The site, which was launched back in 2007, has seen rapid growth in the past months. Unlike other places where you need other metrics to measure growth, on Twitter, this is quite easy. The easiest way to check its growth is to track the number of tweets sent per day!

Twitter, which was launched in 2007, has enjoyed rapid growth in recent months. In 2007, around 5,000 tweets were sent per day. That increased to 300,000 messages per day in 2008 and now in 2010, it has reached a staggering 50 million tweets per day!

According to Sean Garrett, vice president of communications at Twitter, 20 percent of tweets - or roughly 83 messages per second - contain a reference to a product or brand. Having said all this, how does Twitter fare when compared with other giants in the social networking field? Well, it's quite small actually. YouTube, for example, serves a billion videos per day, Facebook users spend around 8 billion minutes on the site every day, with around a billion messages sent through Facebook's chat each day! This is way above Twitter's count. However, Twitter's steady growth continues to be the talk of the town. Also, it doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

It remains to be seen how far this growth trajectory grows and ends up. Will it ever rival Facebook -- say two years down the line? Let's wait and watch!
