1 TB Disk up for Standardization

Six Japanese companies came together to start work on the holographic versatile disk, capable of storing 1.3 TB.
Almost six months since scientists at the Imperial College, U.K., claimed to have invented an optical storage device with a 1 TB capacity, six companies have come together to announce the development of a disk of a similar capacity.
The new technology, holographic versatile disk, is being touted as the next generation optical disk after Blu-ray or HD-DVD formats become a standard. The companies that have created the Holographic Versatile Disk Alliance includes Fuji Photo. The disk would be capable of storing up to 200 movies and transfer data at 1 Gbps.
Ecma International had set up a technical committee to develop a standardization strategy for the holographic information storage systems. The system is based on the collinear technology developed by Tokyo-based Optware.
Optware's partners in the development of the technology include Japan-based companies CMC Magnetics Corporation, Fuji Photo Film, Pulstec Industrial, Strategic Media Technology and Toagosei.
Holographic Information Storage breaks the density limits of conventional optical storage by recording through the full depth of the medium instead of recording on the surface only. One HVD can store upwards of 200 gigabytes of data, the equivalent of more than 40 of today's DVDs. Future implementations will be able to store more than 1.3 terabytes.
TC44, the technical committee set up by Ecma for standardizing the technology, will begin standardizing three different storage media: Holographic Versatile Disc cartridges (capacity: 200 Gbytes per cartridge), read-only Holographic Versatile Discs (capacity: 100 Gbytes per disc) and Holographic Versatile Cards (capacity: 30 Gbytes per card). The fourth project is standardization of a case for 120 mm read-only HVDs.
Ecma has ambitious goals - in December 2006 the new standards will be submitted to ISO for fast-track processing.
Dr. Yoshio Aoki, President and CEO of Optware Corporation, commented, "HVDs and HVCs use a completely different technology from the conventional two-axis method and fully exploit the optical servo technologies associated with conventional CDs and DVDs. This unique feature of the Optware collinear technology is very well suited for high-performance recording formats, file structures and input/output interfaces for the AV/IT professional electronic media storage markets such as film and broadcast content for the disk and card form factors."
"The standardization through Ecma process should accelerate the commercialization of the technology, as many of the key players in this field will actively participate in and collaborate with the committee's efforts," said Claude Leglise, Vice President of Intel Capital.
"The large capacity together with the high transfer speed of holographically recorded media will create a quantum leap in media storage technology. Ecma International, which has developed 90% of all modern international standards for optical and magnetic storage media is very pleased to undertake the standardization of HVDs, HVCs and related subjects. We are looking forward to a new success story," said Jan van den Beld, Secretary General of Ecma.

Dvd's get scratched and so do cd's.With one scratch u can wipe out all ur life's hard work.I hope they have a solution for avoiding such things on this 1 TB disc.

First out in sept, 04 at Paris Electronics Show. Disc is protected by plastic case (looks QUITE like floppy). Told invented in Longmount, Colorado u.s.a.

I remember when I brought a 2x CD burner for $500 (was very expensive and new technology at the time). What amazed me at the time was that most HDD's were bearly reaching 1Gb, so a 650Mb CD was massive. When DVD's came out I was rather dissapointed, but FINALLY there will be a storage medium nearly that of my PC's HDD's. I do lots of video editing, and burning 100Gbs or 200Gbs of Data at once will be bliss.

Let's now think what we are going to put in 1 TB storage disk. Perhaps, all India voter list or even photographic records of voters/citizens or all India Telephone directory.
