The $12 PC, reported yesterday, is actually based on an NES clone, not the Apple II
We reported yesterday on the $12 computer that an MIT team is working on. It was then assumed that the PC would take form around an Apple II machine, even though project spokesperson Derek Lomas mentioned a clone of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) that he picked up in Bangalore, as his inspiration. Today comes news that the $12 PC is indeed based on a console: an unlicensed NES-clone, imported from China (where else?), called the Victor-70. Remember the Media Gaming Console? It was an 8-bit NES clone, sold (unlicensed) in local toy shops, and probably the gateway console for most of us PC-only gamers. The Victor-70 used by the MIT team is just such a machine.
The Victor-70 houses the NES guts inside of a keyboard and accepts carts and Famicon software, including a version of BASIC programming language. This is where the reference to Apple II comes in. Lomas and team intend to leverage the familiarity with BASIC -- a language that all budding programmers dabbled with -- to develop software for these NES-clone devices, which will then be used for educational purposes.
