11% Computers Part of Botnets

PandaLabs' 2007 report found that 11 percent of computers around the world are part of botnets, and are responsible for sending 85 percent of spam.

Approximately 11 percent of computers around the world are part of botnets, and they are responsible for 85 percent of all spam sent, says PandaLabs' annual report on malware activity in 2007.

The report reveals that everyday, some half a million computers are infected by bots. Bots are programs that go resident on computers awaiting commands from their creators, who can take complete control of the infected systems. Once the crooks have control over several hundred such computers, they can hook them all up to create botnets.

In this way, around 11 percent of computers around the world are part of botnets, with them responsible for sending 85 percent of spam.

During the past year, PandaLabs claims to have exposed several tools including Zunker and Barracuda that were being used by cyber crooks to administer networks of thousands of infected computers across over 50 countries.

Along these lines, junk mail was one of the major threats throughout 2007. During that year, more than 50 percent of email received by home users was spam, while the percentage in corporate environments ran between 80 percent and 95 percent.

The subject matter of the junk mail was found to be highly varied with sexual health the most popular theme during the first quarter of 2007, which accounted for 54 percent of all spam detected.

In the second and third quarters of 2007, pharmaceuticals topped the list with percentages of 45 percent and 30 percent respectively.

In terms of the origins of all this junk mail, some 59.72 percent was found sent from Russia, 23.08 percent from USA, 6.12 percent from Turkey, 4.77 percent from Germany, and 3.16 percent from UK.

The PandaLabs annual report also discusses malware statistics for the last quarter as well as the whole of 2007, evolution of kits for installing malware, and Internet crime trends for the coming year.
