Everything that is wrong with the Apple iPhone
Everybody loves the iPhone. Even though few in India have seen, touched, or used the device, the buzz for the product is palpable; its praise almost universal. While we agree that the iPhone is a great device that gets a lot right, there are several faults that need to be highlighted. The most glaring of these faults have come crawling out of the woodwork in the past few weeks.
The biggest issue here is that Apple has created what some like to call a "walled garden" through its App Store business. Instead of a thriving software ecosystem, Apple wants a developer to pay $99 before starting development; to only sell software through Apple's store, and to comply to restrictions placed. The reasons for doing so might be noble: greater security, and greater stability could only have been assured by a closed environment, as Apple likes to point out. But is that really so? Does Apple guarantee a secure and crash-proof product now that both consumers and developers live in this gilded cage?
The decision to create this walled garden has also seen useful applications removed from the store, or useless applications being added to the store, and then removed. Yesterday, we learned that Apple might be tracking everything installed on the iPhone, with speculation that this hidden mechanism might even allow them to remotely disable an application.
If all of this doesn't give you cause for a pause, here's everything else that's wrong with the iPhone and the Apple way of things:
1. You can only sync music and video through iTunes. Want to drag-and-drop content from your hard-drive? Would like to sync music from another store -- from Amazon, for example? You are out of luck.
2. You can only install apps through iTunes. Never before has a cellphone maker slammed the door to an open development enviornment and received nothing but praise for doing so. Imagine Microsoft creating a gated software ecosystem and installing themselves as the gatekeeper. They would be eaten alive by the press. Apple gets a free pass.
3. Apple deletes useful applications. Nullriver's modem app went to the grave with no reason stated. Apple's digital business is dependent on the music and movie industry's whims. How long before the industry dictates which applications we can run?
4. Apple might not accept apps which might be detrimental to its own business. We won't hold our breath for competitive products to appear on the iPhone anytime soon.
5. You can only run one third-party application at a time. An instant messenger that runs in the background and collects messages while you are away? Not happening.
6. Apple might not allow app vendors to open up their apps. The terms of the NDA that potential application developers for the iPhone need to sign, effectively restrict redistribution of the source. Apple has created OSX on the back of FreeBSD; Safari on KHTML, SproutCore library used in MobileMe, and now they have built a layer on top that excludes others. Nik at TechCrunchIT laments that "the same community who demand all from Microsoft, feel gifted and special when Apple give them an inch of rope... Applications can only be installed from a single source, iTunes, and open source applications and distribution is near impossible. How do you install an iPhone application without iTunes? Where are the community advocates arguing for a standard interface, openess and free code?"
7. Limited Bluetooth use. The iPhone 3G has Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR but can you transfer files over Bluetooth? Does it support A2DP? Stereo Bluetooth? No on all counts. As of now, all you get from Bluetooth are headset voice calls, and that's it.
8. No copy-paste. This might be more of an interface issue that Apple is seeking to solve, than anything else. But it only underlines the drawbacks of a walled garden. If development was as open as say, it is on the Palm platform -- you would have a hundred different solutions by now, and at least one you could actually use. This also underlines how much the innovative spirit is killed by a controlled development environment. The iPhone ecosystem doesn't encourage software tinkering and probably won't spur garage breakthroughs that drive the industry forward.
9. No MMS. While you can e-mail photos, multimedia messaging is absent from the device. And speaking of videos...
10. No video recording. In the world of YouTube, the iPhone 3G does not offer video recording.
11. No voice command. For a touch-screen-only phone, voice controls would have been a huge plus for hands-free or one-handed control. Can we expect this functionality to be added by a third-party app?
12. Hardware locked to carriers. You cannot use any SIM card with this GSM device. How stupid is that? Hello monopolies, goodbye competition. Thanks to carrier lock-in when the phone launches in India, the iPhone 3G might not even enjoy 3G until months afterwards. How do you like them apples?
The iPhone 3G is a great device. Apple has innovated with its interface; it's great at what it does. The problem is that its benefits and innovations only highlight Apple's missteps. Dave Winer posits that it is a lack of choice that makes Apple products an attractive proposition: "All the other products suck. Hugely. Apple's [products] just suck a bit less. Not a huge accomplishment for an industry, imho."
The Apple iPhone 3G might be a great product. But that does not account for the universal praise that it earns all over the net, from press and fans alike. If we do not underline its drawbacks, the status quo will be maintained. So grow a little hate inside your hearts for the iPhone. Apple can do wrong.
One reason I hate this article: the word 'why' immediately follows the word 'reason' in the title! argh!

C'mon, you guys. Do you honestly think they were not aware of the above mentioned? There are reasons behind them... Think. Has anyone thought about the word "Security"? And you say, "Monopolies"? Please -- if Nokia or Motorola had the concept for this or the technical know-how and ability to deliver, would you be calling them the same? Sounds like we have a few upset Microsoft dead-heads in the room. Whatever... Apple is providing a solid architecture for your value. This is state-of-the-art technology people. I don't care about your whining. Features are only going to get better in time. In my business world, this product is amazingly powerful and extremely useful. It has already made a difference. -Written from my iPhone

I researched the iPhone up and down / inward and outward and finally decided to extend the life of my nokia 6230i by another 1.5 years by investing in a good bluetooth stereo headset. iPhone is simply one truck full of hoopla. I am a old styled man and i love my freedom (read freedom with firmware, media files, service provider, enhancements, memory capability and choice etc..etc..etc... oh yes i travel around 3 diff countries and actually make calls with three diff service providers of MY CHOICE) comon be a man.. look at facts in the eye.. and don't beat around the bush.

honestly, I believe that the iPhone customers and the open source community are distinctively different groups with distinctively different views on freedom. If you buy an iPhone, you believe in the freedom to express yourself or something like that, and you accept certain limitations. If you are in the open source movement, you don't care much about the iPhone bling.

3g iphone rocks. its way faster than the 1st gen old one. check the online stores,,,old ones are going for 150$ which is like 5-8k. But they are going because guys want to upgrade to 3g. everyone is awaiting the launch. all others have launched their new models and lowered prices in anticipation...so sorry dost..while yr points may be factually correct,,most are overcome by third party hacks or dont matter. once, just once try surfing on iphone..then u decide..yr call.

$150? Try more like $300-$400, first Gen iphones are golden since there is no contract and can easily be unlocked.

With Iphone about to (or has it already) make an appearance in the Indian market, this article is educative in the sense it allows for Indian Customers to make an informed choice about the phone. No doubt - many would get to a store, and see how absolutely simple it is to have an iPod and a phone in one device, which simply thrills with the ease of use. However anyone who values Bang for their buck would want to know about features - and this article goes a long way in removing the Gloss over what is essentially a good product. Now Pat - should you be unable to understand it, you really cannot blame TT for it right?
by Pats, Glasgow, on Aug 11, 2008 07:00 PM, Report abuse
I am not against the article or its contents. My point is simple. This is NOT a piece of NEWS. Just see which section it is posted under.
by Pat, Mumbai, on Aug 11, 2008 07:13 PM, Report abuse
Many things stated in this article are completely wrong and I can't believe all you ignorant people are believing this dribble. 5. 'you can only run one-third party app at a time'..WRONG i run my instant messenger program in the background and it DOES collect my messages while i use other programs. 9. 'No MMS'...WRONG! You can email photos and I HAVE a program for multimedia messenging. I also have a program for voice conversation so chew on that. 10. 'No video Recording' WRONG AGAIN I have a program called video recorder that takes 30 second clips and I can email these to anyone i so chose. 8. 'No copy-paste' WRONG AGAIN i have a program called iCopy and its straightforward copy and paste. 12. 'Hardware locked to carriers' you may think thats right but you would be WRONG! I can used AT&T for a while and my friend used Unicell for his and I am currently using Telstra because I am studying abroad in Australia. If you believe anything on this article then clearly you have no idea of the iphone's capability and the fact that it is a computer in your pocket and runs OS10. No other cellphone runs a computer software. I realize this is new technology to you guys but once you hack your iphone you can do anything you want to it and it will kill any other phone on that market and if you dont believe that then your a sap. PEACE OUT

yes, having UNIX running the iPhone is a major attraction to technical types. there has never been a phone this powerful, then all niceties of Apple's engineering expertise make it unbeatable for years to come. this list was written by someone that doesn't have an iphone since about 60% of them are flat out wrong.

by anon, Auckland, on Aug 11, 2008 03:35 AM, Report abuse Reply
how's that's tiny 2.6 inch screen, wonky interface and poorly quality software working for you? fact is, Nokia is VERY worried about Apple since they simply don't have the resources to compete against a unix based computer firm as powerful as Apple. I sat in line with a Nokia Engineer flown in from Helsinki for MacWorld this year. You could sense she was terrified of what Apple may do once they release the iPhone nano. Nokia is toast unless they go with a license from Apple, nobody is going to want any Nokia phone once they are exposed to an iPhone.

Firstly, Apple did not claim that their Iphones is the mother of all handphones in the world... Indeed there are better phones than Iphones out there.. For people like me...I don't care if you are going to have 100 reasons to hate the Iphone..carry on thinking if you wish to.... To me Iphone might lack of some quality features and of course some imperfection.. but its a beauty to behold... I'm gladly to take it as my lawfully wedded phone..just like my wife ;).

I have heard that if you download your songs from a third-party supplier that if you sync them with the iTunes software that it will automatically convert it to being an iTune, so people can't say that they have to buy a iTune through them. I have done that with iPods but I don't know 100% if that also applies to the iPhone as well. If someone would check that out for me I would highly appreciate it.
by Kaitlyn, Carlisle, on Aug 11, 2008 01:28 AM, Report abuse Reply
You have heard wrong. iTunes doesn't convert any song format, it's a media PLAYER which supports lots of common formats. Any free song wherever it comes from will play fine within iTunes, no conversion needed. Apple doesn't control anything about "purchased" songs, they are simply the distributor. The iPhone and iPod acts the same, any song you have will play fine, but if you "purchase" a song from the Online Store, you will have to abide by the record company's rules. (again, Apple has no control over that)

way too opinionated... most of this criticism is immaterial to the experience of the phone. the only tangible things missing are the MMS, video recording, and cut/paste, which still by no means overshadow the virtue of this device and how it truly puts internet in your pocket, frees you from your laptop, and reinvents intuitive user interface for a handheld. the author of this article clearly hasn't realized how much better Apple products truly are over any other manufacturer.

Another day, another list of iPhone MIAs. From this list, take the obvious tech tradeoffs for the limitations of current battery design, and direct assaults on AAPL's business model, and missing features only explicable in the fullness of time, and you're left with: almost nothing. Having used a v1 16GB iPhone since January, it's the best portable device I've ever used (incl several cell phones, one Palm, and one MessagePad). It gets way way more things right than things wrong --or incomplete. The "answer" for the itchys & scratchys of tech is to buy a different device. On a different network. Wait for OpenMoko or Android. Or better yet: buy an iPhone, current or previous, and jailbreak it.

Well this is nothing new. Apple has always been a rather closed club of ignorance. Their boxes barely stand up to a well made home rig. And their gimmick of a phone... well I've seen nothing of it that impresses me when compared to even an average smartphone. So once again, Apple makes something pretty for the ignorant masses to eat up. It's not Microsoft, so it must be good... right?
by Nemo, Columbus, on Aug 09, 2008 03:56 PM, Report abuse Reply
Actually, Apple has always been for the upper echelon of computerdom. It's more for technically savvy person, the engineering and computer science types. Windows is more for the lower, uneducated classes, the people that don't understand computing so they cobble together parts to try and build a Mac clone. Macs hold their value much longer than the tinkertoy machines, that's why smart people only buy Macs...

YOu forgot two big problems. The battery is not removable and does not last long and typing text message is a nightmare with its small keys and quirky interface. LG Voyager still better choice for business folks.

The battery is certainly removable, it's only $14 to replace... its battery lasts longer than ANY smartphone according to PC Magazine. And actually the keys on the iPhone are larger than a Blackberry, and it's MUCH easier to type on. It's just that you've never used an iPhone so don't understand how it works.

I can't believe there are so many people emotionally defending a..... cell phone. It's just a cell phone (yes, it's slick and has some great features), and Apple is just a brand. While the iPhone's touch GUI is a great step forward, the phone has some shortcomings - and the article did a good job pointing them out. I think it's important to remember not to get emotionally attached to a company brand. Apple is more expensive, has poor warranties (unless you pay even more), and uses cheaper components than the design suggests. Why be brand loyal to that?
by dave, sf, on Aug 10, 2008 03:51 AM, Report abuse Reply
Oh, and what's with the battery being locked inside and only Apple can change it for $? That's so wrong. I wish Apple loved their customers they way their customers love them.

@dave the iPhone battery is fully user replaceable, and it's only $15. It's a total myth Apple has to replace any battery in any device they make, it's simply a "service" they offer if you want it... geeesh!

The Iphone is not pefect i agree, however like any peice of hardware its not just a cell phone, it will have all the above items addressed and i can see that this "cell phone" will recieve upgrades free that will unlock more potential, as far as cost goes, and apple in general, i sold every pc i had 6 machines and traded UP to apple, i have been a pc user for 20 years and now all i can say "unless you use a mac daily you will never understand why people are loyal" it just works and i dont stress anymore, apple is like a religion we just cant convince anyone its better... they just have to try it to believe it

Thanks for the thoughtful and intelligent criticism. Based on it - and other research- I'm going wait before I buy a new phone. I have two concerns - 1) I hate iTunes (& iPods), the most over-hyped junk ever (it's Apples version of Office), in this case the simpler WMP is better, and has higher quality music settings. I hate low fidelity music. 2nd, closed systems bite. You can't get Netflix (superior on-demand movie quality to iTV or whatever it's called) on an Apple because it's blocked. What great service will they hold back on the iPhone that we don't even know about yet...? It's worth waiting 12 months for a new phone to see what's available on Symbian or Android. And also, this article was not FUD. Whoever wrote that was dead wrong. Why do we consider being brand loyal stupid except when it comes to Apple, then its all of a sudden cool?!?
by dave, SF, on Aug 10, 2008 12:38 AM, Report abuse Reply

If you don't like the apps store that much, which you have no reason to because there are plenty of free apps you can download. you are not forced to pay for apps and you can also download them from your phone, you don't need itunes. The app store is controlled as in a shared environment, security and control would be passed to users which would 100X the support folks as 1 of 10 apps would work. iPhone does not text photos - this was taken off the table - if you have an iphone, email the photo. Video recording kills the battery - crossed off the list. All yoor rants have well documented responses but of course you would never link to them. People that rip the iPhone all have one thing in common: THEY DO NOT OWN AN iPHONE

I have an iphone 3G and it sucks. The battery lasts only 4 hours unless you turn half of the reasons to buy it off and the so called "push" email is not "push" and hell, it doesn't work half the time. Which is not acceptable. I have had Macs for 20 years but I am going back to a blackberry. They might not be as slick but they work, which the iphone doesn't.

Great article. "Imagine Microsoft creating a gated software ecosystem and installing themselves as the gatekeeper. They would be eaten alive by the press. Apple gets a free pass." So true. It boggles the mind.

Apple is a business. They not obligated to provide you anything. It is your choice whether to buy or not. Am I better off using their products than not, I think I am and I'm voting with my money. Why would anyone want to turn Apple into microsoft?

Umm, that criticism would make sense if apple had a walled ecosystem for their computers, but the wall only extends around the iphone. What is is reminiscent of is the early days of Nintendo when it had complete control of development for its systems

Not an entirely truthful article 1) False: Filemagnet on Appstore lets you drag and drop from desktop. Amazon music is mp3 and will play and sync in itunes. (They even offer the option of letting iTunes manage their music) 2) False: Most cellphones operate only in walled gardens as opposed to computers. If you want to have your own way there are open source installer applications for iPhone. 3) True 4) Normal in cellphones 5) Normal in cellphones 6) Half false: You can install open source, unlimited access apps if you want to. 7) True 8) True: ...and while they have said it is on the list to do it is still lame 9) Half false: MMS apps exist, if you want to install them. Or you can email to MMS if you google how. Or you can ask why which comes up with obvious answers a) MMS is not standards based with incompatibility across brands b) carriers have variable limits to what/how much can be sent or received c) carriers charge the user even if the receiver cannot receive d) while most phones have the feature it is not commonly available due to carrier, plan, network or user limitations. e) MMS has been a flop globally from a carrier revenue perspective. 10) Half false: Apps can be installed if you want to do this with automatic conversion and upload to Youtube 11) Half false: Appstore already has a few apps offering this 12) 90% False: In very few countries is it single carrier locked. You can legally buy it unlocked in many countries. Carrier locking is almost the rule in the world. This is a whinge about telcos not phones. Only no one has the guts to take them on properly about it so they complain about the phone makers instead. Lame To conclude. The iPhone is probably the best at what it does and what it doesn't do will surprise you. If you want to opt out of the safe application process you can and the world is your oyster with some risk and skill. The most powerful platform ever leveraged for a phone and it has been restricted for the sanity of 90% of the market, the other 10% who want that freedom of feature access will find a huge homebrew market waiting to embrace them. Then again if you actually find a phone that a) has everything you want b) does it all in the way that you want it to... Buy two so when it inevitably falls apart in 12 months you can keep using it since the phone maker will now be making models that are completely incompatible with yours and there will be no software or firmware upgrades for yours EVER. Unless the one you bought was an iPhone. BTW There are at least 10 things that it doesn't do that are better reasons to list. Copy Paste is one of them.

I love articles like this that spawn so much debate! I am trying to decide between an iPhone and the Blackberry Bold, and I think I'm going to get the BB when it comes out. The iPhone is a really slick product, but for me, it misses the boat in a few crucial areas, the keyboard being the biggest one. I also can't believe it lacks video recording. That's just lame. I know there are third-party solutions out there, but I want what I buy to work out of the box, especially for that price. I also hate the way Apple chains you to iTunes. Sorry Steve-O, maybe next time!

Hmmm... Everything you say is right, of course. But still, it's always been that walled garden that's kept the list of applications that run on Mac -- and now the iPhone -- admittedly short, but also sweet. While there may exist several times the number of applications on other platforms, most of them suck, and brutally. Many Windows applications are so bad that they defy comprehension. If that's the model you'd like to see on the iPhone (or the Mac, perhaps), then let's just agree to disagree; stick to the wince and palm devices, where choice rules, granted, but not quality or coherence.

iPhone - no bluetooth, no voice dialing, no video, no mms, no sms forwarding.... iPod - no fm, not drag and drop thingy.... mac books - DAMN costly what apple basically does is it gives the industry what is needed....but then it makes its products such a way that they completely suck!! I mean look at the ipod....we needed such a music player...but when you can include fm and all the other stuff apple is still not advancing... laptops, well it hasnt done anything that would make us call it a pioneer...there are a hell lot of notebooks with much better configuration than apple's similarly priced notebooks.... all in all.... apple apple all hype apple apple not ripe!

Deepak, The iPhone has BlueTooth, just not data transfer or stereo. Stereo would be nice, but data transfer would be lame because it's so slow and limited range...and you've already got USB, WiFi, Edge and 3G for data. "no voice dialing", not true, the iPhone has voice dialing through AT&T TellMe (actually provided by Microsoft) as well as 3rd party apps. "no video", again, third party. "no fm", you mean 'radio'. Ha, I remember fm radio, back in the days when you had to be within range of the actual station and you'd get all kinds of static. And then it evolved into satellite radio where you had to pay monthly fees, but couldn't get many local stations. That seems like ages ago. Now days, with devices like the iPhone, you can get FM, AM radio stations from all over via your Edge or 3G connection. You can be anywhere. It's free. There are some stations that are Internet only...you get those too. There are also apps like Pandora, which again is free, and allows you to roll your own customized radio station. ... "but when you can include fm and all the other stuff apple is still not advancing"...Apple is advancing so fast, you're being lapped and don't even realize it. Try to keep up.

Deepak, It doesn't make toast either. FFS the iPhone is about what it does do it does do incredibly well if not far easier than any of the other so called smartphones. You aren't going to get this because you have never picked one up and actually used it. If you had you might get it. The iphone was not created to tick a collection of feature boxes. It was designed to do certain things very easily.

Seeing my laptop, atleast 3 of my friends and cousins have bought it. You're talking about getting better configuration for the same price, dude i play alot of games and i run windows through bootcamp just for the games, let me tell you one thing, get any of those notebooks with better config for the same price, I can bet the macbook would not only be better but would also last much longer!!!!! You won't believe this but even the windows performs much better on a macbook pro then on any other laptop with the same configuration. Apple really knows how to make the most out of the hardware!!! About the iPhone, I'm buying it this month. I was waiting for the 3G one to come out. As everyone have already mentioned, Apple stuff is expensive not just cos of the cool looks (as i used to think before) but its great to actually use one.

people buy products that works for them. look at the iPod, it lacks what other music players have - fm radio, video recording, etc...but yet it's the dominant player by far on the market and that's not because it's the only one that's cool or stylist. Sony and Creative have cool stylist players as well. it's simply because it does what people want/need which is to play music. Adding features isn't advancing if people don't use them.

If Microsoft tried restricting who could develop software for Windows, decided which software you were ALLOWED to run, insisted on a cut of all software sales for it's platform and tied you to a specific ISP, they would be flailed by the press and sued beyond belief. Apple seems to get a a pass. I don't get it.

what you fail to understand is market share. Microsoft is run on 90% of the computers worldwide while Apple has only 5% (and that's being optimist). If Microsoft were to do what you propose, they would shut out pretty much every other competitor and shows they're a monopoly because people would have no other choice if they wish to stay in business and stiffens competition . Apple, on the other hand, has such a small market share, they really aren't a big player except to themselves. So if people don't like what they are doing, it's no big deal because they can change to Microsoft or another OS. You're trying to compare a marlin to a 1500-ton shark. Not the same thing.

You should convert your videos using iMovie. Then it can easily port into iTunes and your iPhone. You can also directly port it into youtube from iMovie. Every person I know who has an iphone 3G loves it. Hype and advertisement will get you only so far. If it was that easy, Motorola , et al. would be doing it. If it was a marvelous phone, the hype would die out. Ask yourself why the 3G version is doing better than the original iPhone in terms of interest and sales. Not because of the hype or status symbol but it simply rocks. Wouldn't surprise me if iPHone accounts for 90% of wireless phone web browsing. BTW, I'm waiting another 2 wks to get my iPHone due to contract expiration. I've used a treo for 6 yrs. I think I tried web browsing once or twice 6 yrs ago and haven't since. Because it sucks.

You are spouting FUD -- fear, uncertainty, and doubt. This is not good journalism. Point 1: It is true you can only sync music and videos through iTunes. So what? Having an intermediary application verify the files are okay for the device is bad? C'mon. Point 2: False. You CAN bring non-copy protected music from other sources, such as Amazon and eMusic into the iPod/iPhone. Point 3: This was AT&T's doing, not Apple's. Do your homework. Point 4: So you want the local Shell station to start installing pumps for Chevron gas? Did you ever take a business class in school? Did you ever GO to school? Point 5: False. AIM (AOL's instant messenger) runs fine in the background. Point 6: These apps are not restricted. You can download Apple's FREE and OPEN SOURCE development tools from their site today. Point 7: I don't know the reason for this, but this is a non-issue for most iPhone users. Point 8: Watch for version 2.1 of the firmware. Copy/paste is there. Be patient. Point 9: Who cares about MMS today? Send an e-mail instead. What an old technology. Point 10: There is an app that does this. Point 11: Who cares? Voice command is buggy even on the phones that have it. Who in the real world uses it on a regular basis? Point 12: This is not true in all countries. In the US, AT&T is the sole carrier, but in Europe and Asia, you can buy unlocked versions, usually for several hundred dollars more. THAT is why the iPhone is locked -- subsidies. Really. Please go take a business class and stop spouting this poorly-written FUD.
by Aaron, Dallas, on Aug 09, 2008 07:25 PM, Report abuse Reply
Let me preface this response by saying that I don't typically comment or reply to comments - it was only after the tossing around of "FUD" that I decided to do so... -- Disclaimer: I am a software engineer living in Silicon Valley, heavily considering buying an iPhone 3G. I have friends that were/are/will be Apple employees, some of which work on the iPhone. I have much respect and admiration for the engineering and design that goes into Apple products. I am not the biggest fan of their marketing department, however. -- Point 1: Having an intermediary application isn't a bad thing. However, having only one choice of application can be disconcerting. Point 2: The writer was referring to the source of *applications* (and not music, as you had addressed), of which, the only legitimate source is iTunes. Point 3: Likely very true. However, it was Apple that pulled the app from the store. The question is: is it Apple's place to remove said app? From the eye of the writer, no...
by Ray, Silicon Valley, on Aug 09, 2008 10:04 PM, Report abuse
Point 6: While you are correct in that the dev tools are free, I think there was a little miscommunication here... the writer's point was that there is an inherent double standard for Apple vs. the rest of the tech community (and there is one, trust me). Apple has constructed and maintains a tightly closed system, and AFAIK, per NDA of legal iPhone app developers selling on the App Store (again, is the only legal source of applications), the source code for any iPhone apps must be closed off as well. Meanwhile, a lot of the community is driving towards openness, including (almost-) freely distributable and source code, a standard which fuels harsh criticism to those who choose to keep some systems closed. Point 7: One of the biggest reasons for this is power-saving, so it doesn't drain the battery faster than Niagara Falls. I agree with you that this is a non-issue for many users, but also point out that it isn't unreasonable that others would expect this functionality from a device that advertises it supports the latest Bluetooth standard. Point 8: This is news to me. Source? [Are you an Apple employee? Did you just break your NDA? Would you even tell us ;] ?] Point 9: The writer's point isn't that everyone in the world would use MMS; point is that many of the phones that offer roughly the same (even lower) caliber of camera, microphone, and data transfer capability have MMS built-in, and so Apple should be held to roughly same standard.
by Ray, Silicon Valley, on Aug 09, 2008 10:15 PM, Report abuse
Ray: "The writer's point isn't that everyone in the world would use MMS; point is that many of the phones that offer roughly the same (even lower) caliber of camera, microphone, and data transfer capability have MMS built-in, and so Apple should be held to roughly same standard." I think this is like Apple removing floppy disks from the original iMac. I think Apple are pushing for people to communicate via email on the iphone rather than MMS. Admittedly there would be an issue if people are trying to send their mates things - but it is just a re-thinking of how things are done. Just because people are used to doing things one way doesn't mean it is the RIGHT way of doing things.
by rattyuk, Miami, on Aug 09, 2008 10:22 PM, Report abuse
Point 10: An app which you have to pay for, on top of the phone and service plan. While I personally wouldn't mind paying for said app, some would, especially if other phones come with this functionatlity standard. Point 11: The writer cares, and in an critical article like this, that's all that matters. You are entitled to your own opinion, but please remember that the writer is also entitled to his. Point 12: This is true for most cell phones, but is it true for the iPhone? I was under the impression that all of Apple's phones worldwide are sold as locked to their respective providers, even though they have an externally accessible SIM card holder (which wasn't the case in the first-gen iPhone) - I would be very happy if this was true. While clearly not flawless, I thought that this article brought up very valid criticisms, and is not FUD as you claim. Whether or not you share this sentiment at all is, of course, your prerogative. However, consider this: without any criticism, there would be no drive to innovate, to improve the iPhone (or even a competitor) - *after all, there wouldn't be any shortcomings with the phone, right?*... as such, I agree with the writer's call to criticism. P.S. As a word of advice: ad hominem attacks such as questioning the writer's education or telling the writer to take classes only work to undermine your credibility of your responses and the respect one has for you.

"The one thing I envy of the iPhone is the size of the touch screen. The iPhone created a technology sought by others." Don't forget that it is MULTI Touch so certain things such as resizing images are much easier on the machine. Apple have built-in "gestures" which can be accessed by any programmer of the device to control things. Yes the screen is great but they have really thought out the way you work with the machine. Point 1:So what????? What about when iTunes doesn't run on your operating system or computer? I waited for months for he 3G iPhone, but couldn't but it when I learned that iTunes didn't run on my computer. Point 6: Downloading developmen tools to your computer is different from downloading applications TO THE PHONE. Point 11: Voice Command works awesome on my phone. I use it all the time for dialing my favorites and for looking up locations on the GPS program. Voice Command is really cool with a headset. You click a button and talk...you don't even have to take the phone out of your pocket/purse. This article did mention some non-preferred business reasons, but the non of the reasons I despise the phone now (after really wanting one) is due to functionality. The financial is fine and usability is without compare....but it misses SD card, USB mass storage, full Bluetooth, and Java applications. And the only reason all of those technologies are missing is to prevent putting files on the phone without their permission.

1) "Would like to sync music from another store -- from Amazon, for example? You are out of luck. " Music from Amazon syncs just fine thank you. As far as using something other than iTunes, after having tried just about everything else, I have no desire to use anything else. iTunes is one of the major reasons why I want to use iPods and the iPhone. 2. You can only install apps through iTunes. Again, not true. I install all kinds of 3rd party apps via Cydia, Installer.app and Transmit (a FTP/SSH client). You may argue that this requires a hack, but really all that's happening is that Apple isn't certifying 3rd party management apps. Isn't that level of Apple control (protection) something you're complaining about? 4) Apple might not accept apps which might be detrimental to its own business. You mean like Lotus Notes which competes with Mail? Are you even paying attention? 5) An instant messenger that runs in the background and collects messages while you are away? Not happening. You forgot the word "yet", as in when Apple releases software update 2.1 which enables the push system. Go watch the Steve Jobs keynote from WWDC again. 8. No copy-paste. That's like saying your corporate jet doesn't have a holster for your horse whip. Is the interface for the iPhone far superior to any other phone? Absolutely yes! Much of what you'd want copy and paste for has been solved through other methods. Sure, adding copy and paste would still be nice, and I believe Apple will soon, but it's the whole interface that matters. 9. No MMS. 3rd party...but really, MMS sucks. If it was there by default, idiots would be using it instead of email. 10. No video recording. 3rd party 11. No voice command. There is voice dialing through AT&T with TellMe as well as 3rd party voice dialing apps. For overall voice command, again, instead of dreaming up a wishlist, compare the phone to others. Who currently has a voice command (not just dialer) that (and here's the key part) doesn't suck. And for the commenter who mentioned the lack of replaceable battery... The iPhone 3G does have a replaceable battery. It's not user-on-the-go replaceable. If it were, the battery capacity would have to be much smaller, and/or the iPhone would be much bulkier. In addition, the iPhone would be less solid. Not to mention the fact that you've got the screen on one side and the antenna consuming the back side (you don't want the battery to be on the back of the antenna). A much better solution is simply to buy any one of the 3rd party external batteries. I have the Richard Solo battery. You don't have to power down or even end a call to use it. It's small, inexpensive, and can charge the internal battery even when being used.

"9. No MMS.3rd party...but really, MMS sucks. If it was there by default, idiots would be using it instead of email." Only thing about this is that MMS allows for easy sharing with others who are not using Internet on their phone. Yes, you can send some messages to an email address that will transfer like MMS; however, this is not always available and is not intuitively easy to do, i.e., you have to already know which provider your recipient is using when you want to use this method. I like the rest of what you said though. Thanks for sharing.

iPhone User....even better than a car power adapter is a iPod dock in the car stereo system. This is the #1 must-have feature in the next car that I buy...and probably the main reason why I'll trade in my current car. I have an iPod dock on the stereo system on my boat and I love it! The iPhone is always charged and I'm always listening to music, checking email, using the GPS, or making calls. There's an incredible app that's available for free, called Tides. It knows where you are, and shows the tide tables and currents for your location and the areas around you. It does this really fast and of course since it's getting the data from an official source, it's accurate as well. It's a really great example of how an app on the iPhone can be better than an app on a notebook or desktop computer....but back to the power....yes the car adapter works great too, and since it charges via USB, it's easy to carry one of those cables around and charge in numerous locations....Many airports/planes/trains now have USB charging ports for example.

Well you sound like a pouting little baby... the iPhone is a fantastic piece of equipment that most people find to be very effective. How about thinking positive, and think of some reasons that a person would like the iPhone? 1. You have many applications right at your fingertips. 2. The iPhone works like NO OTHER cell phone in that everything is seemlessly integrated. 3. You can use your iPhone as an iPod, allowing you to listen to music, audiobooks, watch movies, Podcasts, and anything available in iTunes, which is FABULOUS! 4. The touch technology far surpasses those silly little buttons that you get on the Palm. 5. The GPS is just as good as one of those stand alone devices that cost way too much money. 6. I enjoy having all of my email accounts come to my phone, and with all of that in mind, it makes it easier to just drop a photo into an email and send it. 7. Some of us enjoy using AT&T and being able to keep the same telephone company for all of our communications... just as much as you can take your little palm machine and use it for what you want. 8. With one touch, I can read the newspaper, find out the weather, check my stocks, find out movie times, play the piano, take a photo, watch YouTube, send email, do text messaging, olay my iPod, get directions, operate my computer, , find a restaurant, play games, organize my life and enjoy all at once. 9. I can control any applications, data and music that I wish to appear on my iPhone. 10. I can have the absolute most up to date sleek equipment that will not cause me to drive up into a tree trying to use it, or make me want to throw it out of the window because it is inefficient like so many other cell phones that cannot begin to TOUCH iPhones technology.

I have a Sprint Mogul and its TOUCH screen capable. In fact browsers from Opera, NetFront, and SkyFire (Beta) work as the iPhone. There are 3rd party applications for my Mogul that have a front end like the iPhone to launch programs, do photos, SMS, email etc. HTC has the Touch Diamond and Raphael coming out for Verizon and Sprint. TMobile I believe as well. Everything you said you can do I do with my Mogul. It's not a flame, but thought you should know.

That's just plain silly. Other phones are more open, and have more features for way less $$$. I make my OWN ring tones, for free. Oh, you pay how much???

SkyFire (Beta) is not the same as as safari. Skyfire use their servers to image the site you are wanting to visit and then send you the image of the page. This means one of two things. Firstly your ISP gets to see what pages you are visiting which is kind of weird and secondly you are only looking at an image and not the actual site. I have played with the instinct in Best Buy and I found it very slow and non-intuitive to use. But have not had a chance to play with the HTC stuff. "Everything you said you can do I do with my Mogul." That may be true but it is the ease of use you should try.

The one thing I envy of the iPhone is the size of the touch screen. The iPhone created a technology sought by others. Your right about Skyfire and their process. I'm testing it now and would NOT do any banking thru it just for that reason alone. Otherwise its cool. AT&T isnt that well covered here. Sprint and Verizon have roaming agreements that include data. So, I am envious of the iPhone platform's larger screen, so true so true.

I removed Safari and Quicktime from my PC and will never install them. I don't know what Apple is thinking. If I paid for an application and then they killed it, are they going to refund my money?! Oh I cancelled my iTunes account as well. They are doing the same with a company making clone MACs. They could make a ton of money licensing their OS. Dumb!
by Jeff, NY, on Aug 09, 2008 08:08 PM, Report abuse Reply
"They could make a ton of money licensing their OS. Dumb!" Not yet. Windows is too entrenched and putting OSX on a clone is not a great experience. What is the point of releasing something like that when it is not ready? No one would do that. Oh I forgot Vista. Ok no one but Mircosoft would do that. But it will come. Just small steps
by rattyuk, Miami, on Aug 09, 2008 08:26 PM, Report abuse
Last I remember, Microsoft threw a ton of money Apples way to keep them alive. I run Vista and it runs great. Drivers were an issue with my machine. Apple would suffer the same problems if clone boxes were produced. No one is perfect but Apples protectionist view does stiffle their growth. I'm sure the likes of HP, Lenevo, Dell, Toshiba, and the rest would LOVE to have the option of an MAC OS on their boxes. It improves their bottom line AND Apples because they could license the OS. See the bigger picture. I went into Best buy the other day and out of all the computers there sat one MAC laptop. Sad huh.
by Jeff, NY, on Aug 09, 2008 08:38 PM, Report abuse
"Last I remember, Microsoft threw a ton of money Apples way to keep them alive." Yup, true. There were two reasons for this Jeff. Firstly if Apple had gone under MS would have had no leg to stand on in the anti-competitive court cases they were going through at the time and secondly they made a hell of a lot of money out of doing it. They "invested" 150 million on shares in Apple in early 1999 when Steve came back and threw out all the "business people" who thought selling Apple computers was just to keep releasing stupid small upgrades with little name changes and confusing the hell out of the customer - even they messed up the naming structure at one point and didn't make things easy. When they sold those shares they released something approaching a billion dollars of profit so it was a very smart move on Microsoft's part. Oh and by the way do you know which is one of the most profitable parts of Microsoft's company? That would be the Macintosh Business Unit. Blows the hell out of the Zune, and Xbox units. Of course the other box shifters would love to sell Mac OS. Anything that gets them away from the claws of Microsoft has to be a good thing. But most of them have failed trying to sell Linux into the home.

Jeff: "I went into Best buy the other day and out of all the computers there sat one MAC laptop. Sad huh." You should try visiting an Apple store at some point to see how it is actually done. Best Buy are doing great things getting Apple into the places where Apple stores haven't already been built but unless they are manned by Apple staff then you are going to get the same kind of reaction you got. Disinterest. Coz no-one knows what they do. I have had quite a few people I know buy Macs in the last couple of years specifically because they dual boot Windows. And you know what? After about two weeks, each and every one of them UNLESS they are running a bespoke built windows application (ie custom built for then) all of them are now running OSX only. Some of the bespoke stuff will even run in cross over or in parallels.
by rattyuk, Miami, on Aug 09, 2008 08:54 PM, Report abuse
You do have a good point, but Apple stores are not close by whereas the others are. I would have to drive 75 miles for support after the sale yet alone the purchase. I will find one though since you brought it up. It is worth looking into. The product isnt my bone of contention but Apples practice at times.
by Jeff, NY, on Aug 09, 2008 09:06 PM, Report abuse
Anything that gets them away from the claws of Microsoft has to be a good thing. But most of them have failed trying to sell Linux into the home. Though Linux is great, I would not want to feel like I'm back in the old DOS Windows 3.1 days working out issues. You're right about MS making money helping Apple...no doubt about it. My thought though is Apple allowed CLone Boxes many home users would try one, and some would jump ship. MS had to focus on XP problems and thus Vista wasnt Gold but sold anyways. I dont know but MS is working on their next OS and I would think Apple might want to increase its share of CHANGE in the home thats all.
by Jeff, NY, on Aug 09, 2008 09:14 PM, Report abuse
Jeff, I understand that they aren't everywhere (and probably that's a good thing for some). Seventy five miles is quite a way to go just to experience a store and would probably be a serious negative if you didn't like the experience. I've had very good experience in the stores and also some terrible experiences - it really does depend on the day. You started by mentioning the Safari / Quicktime thing which is a fair comment. I don't know if you realize but when Apple first released Quicktime for PC Microsoft did and update which actually broke it. It stopped working. It was a deliberate move on Microsoft's part to work against Apple. The other thing is that I think one of the things that the 150 million investment covered when Steve came back was to cover the outstanding court cases that the two companies had going between them at the time. One of which was that the codecs for WMV I believe had huge chunks of original Quicktime code in it - even down to the comments!
by rattyuk, Miami, on Aug 09, 2008 09:20 PM, Report abuse
"MS had to focus on XP problems and thus Vista wasnt Gold but sold anyways." That is the problem with MS they are relying on things selling anyway... There is very little actually progression. The really cool stuff that they were working on for Vista got pulled for production reasons. "I dont know but MS is working on their next OS and I would think Apple might want to increase its share of CHANGE in the home thats all." It's kind of happening already with the slow approach Apple is taking. What Apple don't want is to see people running their OS on hardware they haven't cleared and getting the Vista-style experience of things not working and breaking. Also Apple are already ahead on the 64 bit thing - the system will work completely as is with 64 bit and the next version of OSX will be even cleaner.
by rattyuk, Miami, on Aug 09, 2008 09:26 PM, Report abuse
My removal of the programs wasnt for functionality but opposition to Apples business practices of late. I do remember the debacle of Vista and Quicktime. Quicktime works now and do understand its source of dibillition. I will scope out the store with an open mind. I would hate to invest a couple grand only for Apple to say what is allowed to run on the maching I paid for. Thanks for your thoughts.

If only they had cut and paste (rumored due in 2.1 update in September)

I'm thankful for the creation of the iPhone. Other touchscreen product will be created because many like the technology. For me it's not the iPhone or MAC OS, its Apple's business practice. Apple approved an app that did nothing but show a knife on the screen and its impact in sound when you moved the phone. People bought it then they took it off the store. Will Apple kill the app on your phone AFTER you spent your money on it. See thats my bone of contention. So, if you want to compare...Apple to Adolf then you do so, but the iPhone is a nice product (though I don't have one).

People who comment on how the iPhone is a waste of money usually don't know what they're talking about like you. You probably haven't really used an iPhone so all you have to compare is what you read from idiot reviewers like the one in this article, and your own sorry smartphone. Go out and really use one before you make such a stupid judgement. It's beyond a pretty interface, fool. Millions have bought the iPhone because it works so much better than other devices. Great reasons for having an iPhone: 1) You sync through iTunes - Other devices with MP3 capability usually have terrible software for uploading music. Other music services require a monthly subscription fee, so every song your 'rent' is only good so long as you pay the piper. You OWN your songs on iTunes. Plus, iTunes provides a single application for syncing and updating all the other tools (calendar, email, contacts). It makes syncing an iPod or an iPhone so much easier than any other system out there. 2) Apps install through iTunes - iTunes keeps track of the Apps you download and alerts you when there is an update. Everything is in one place, rather than leaving you to remember where you put the installer applications on your computer. 3) Apple controls iTunes - Apple has obligations to their affiliates as well as to its users. While some Apps may seem useful, they can't violate the rules if they want to "play". Other than a couple of infringers, Apple still give us hundreds of other Apps to chose from, with even more to come. 4) Upgrade via iTunes - Unlike other phones that you have to toss out when there's a new model, the iPhone OS can be updated, adding new features without having to change phones. So features missing now, like voice command, cut & paste, MMS, and others, can be added when they become available, even on older models. 5) Build your own software - Apple gives away its iPhone SDK for free. You can develop software for your own phone or for the world to share (and maybe make some $$). Sure it has it's limitations, but the iPhone is the best smart phone out there, bar none. As for this reviewer's hate list for the iPhone, you can create dozens of hate lists for other 'smart phones' out there with many more items on each list.

So its ok to complain about the iPhone but not share a view. I don't have an iPhone and won't just because of Apple's business practices. I'm sure all of you that ran out for the first phone were happy when they cut the price dramtically after a few months, activation via iTunes (a control thing), the control of applications for a device YOU BOUGHT (Its not theirs to control after purchase.), limitting the OS to their systems built by them, (not realizing many would slide over to a MAC OS for home, and potentially an Apple BOX). Capitolism helped built this country. If other companies behave like Apple, then I would say were on a downward spiral towards fascism. I'm sure they don't want buggy products but apples sometimes have worms. Oh before you flame away....I do like the MAC and iPhone. Its the company's practice I don't like.

These are good observations and frankly other than a consumer novelty perspective (which is what Apple targets anyway) no one in the business world would get an Apple cell phone. It lacks scalable, corporate messaging and calendaring support (which by the way needs to ALWAYS work) and its faux-GPS solution seems to work about 50% of the time which isn't very useful when you're trying to find a clients office. I will say that the screen and colors of the iPhone are pretty remarkable but its not the integrated solution that already exists in the market.

There are some annoying omissions with this new unit. The inability to edit Microsoft Word or other commonly used business software. I was also not thrilled about the virtual keyboard, I found it hard to hit the keys precisely and would often get the letter next to the letter I was choosing. I'll wait until the next version comes out, the AT&T 3G network is spotty in most areas in the country unless you live in a big city - otherwise web pages are slow to load.

The biggest problem in the phone industry was that hardware was always considered above software. All kinds of jazzy phones had a similar monolithic kind of software running on it. Every body trying to limit it in some way to differentiate between their two products. What Apple did was obvious. Break those shackles and even though iPhone is a great hardware, it's the software that has made people crazy. And as with apple, they always try to make beautiful products and they automatically sell.

Obviously neither you nor the person who replied to your post has ever tried a windows mobile based phones. Not only were they available years before the first iphone, they also do everything the iphone does as well as the things listed in the list in the article. Apple is late to market with a sub-par product. That's the bottom line. I should also mention that apple style is like any "style" it goes out of "style" like the stupid candy colored, transparent crap they used to make, who'd be caught dead with that now? Yea, my pc may be black and boring looking, but at least I don't have to figure out how to make PC color coordinate with my room. It goes with anything... gee go figure. BTW- Nice article, it's good to see someone whos not to brainwashed to see how crappy apple products are.

Buddy, you are bit LATE with these comments - most of these "problems" were there with the original iPhone too and yet in India I saw thousands of people willing to do anything to get a cracked/hacked iPhone. Now that its legally available, this old, litany of complaints is all you can come up with ? Over a million people have bought the iPhone 3G and are pretty happy with it. In India, smartphones were only for the "young and the restless" - they buy outrageously expensive phones use it for a couple of months and dump it for the next one. Business users had to make do with the crap from HTC and other Chinese Knockoffs. Now that the iPhone will be available in India - finally, the true productive user will be able to have a phone that just does it - it being limited things but very well - AND it can be updated at any time via software. Finally, you are complaining about iTunes? its been around for almost a decade! Get a life!

You all need to keep in mind that different people require different things. I'm a Windows Mobile user, and I love my phone, but even I can respect what Apple has done here. Yes, the things mentioned in this article are valid issues, but for the majority of the people who buy iPhones, these issues are irrelevent, or their so in love with the device that they overlook it's shortcomings. Take a deep breath, drop out of love, and realize that it isn't the end-all and be-all of cellphones. No phone is. Maybe once they can get out of their marriage with AT&T, that iPhone may be an actual killa'.

I purchased an iPhone 3G and quickly switched back to my BlackBerry after a couple of days. The iPhone is pretty limited when it comes to business use. For such a seemingly robust entertainment device it's hard to believe the iPhone doesn't record video or send MMS. I'm not regretting the purchase of the 3G because I sold it for over $600 on eBay. It's not too late for those of you looking to get out of the iPhone. There are still people out there willing to pay more than double the retail to get their hands on one.
by Martin, Flagstaff, on Aug 09, 2008 07:38 PM, Report abuse Reply
The iphone is nothing more than a glorified ipod. It doesn't do anything that is all that amazing to begin with. The only thing that Apple has going for them is a great marketing team and a reliance one the apathy of people today. When you say things like, "that's the way it is and that is the way it is going to be," that just shows how limited your thought process is. Thank you for an article that shows people that APPLE is not the best thing since sliced bread.

Apple has always stood for form over function. From the iPhone to the Mac OS. Apple is for people who want to part with their money, look cool, and struggle to be productive with the overpriced, poorly designed yet good looking products they've purchased.
by Joe, Washington, on Aug 09, 2008 07:33 PM, Report abuse Reply
Then why is Apple's marketshare growing? Wouldn't you think after a while people would look at their shiny new Apple product and say, "This sucks?" It's not happening, so there has to be another explanation. Seriously, take an unbiased look at Apple products some day and you'll be surprised.

this stupid and written by someone who obviously doesn't have an iPhone it research facts. I used to be just like that until I got an iPhone. I have had a blackberry, a Moto Q, Htc Mogul, Htc Touch and now an iPhone. I used to hate just like this author...out of my ignorance of the values of this product. Netshares removal was cuz it was a violation of Apples contract with AT&T. I'm Rich was approved because it was not in violation of Apples states policies but there had since been a large outcry from many users as to it's uselessness. No stereo Bluetooth sucks, I agree. But my earphones work much better than my Moto m9s because people can actually here me when I take their call. The way Apple has attempted to keep the iPhone developement closed is just plain good ole business sense. Anyway, I will end this by saying,"use an iPhone for 1 week, maybe 1 hour, and you will want one; even with it's limitations." Oh yeah, I forgot to add I submitted this from my iPhone.

Why does one have to be a technical person just to use a stupid phone? This kind of thinking is why people switch from Windows all the time: You have to be an engineer to keep it running decently. Why would someone need to know how to delete TEMP files just to check their e-mail? Your average person doesn't know or care about defragging their hard drive. I am a technically-minded person and have no problems keeping Windows running decently, however the majority of the rest of the world isn't this way. You are probably much smarter than the general populace, so keeping your computer in tip-top shape is probably easy for you. For most, it is not that easy. Think about the rest of the world, not just yourself.
by Aaron, Dallas, on Aug 09, 2008 07:34 PM, Report abuse
I think you need to do more research before you make these claims. For #1, it is possible. You could add any music that you own on the hard drive to your playlist with easy drag and drop. I do it all the time. For #5, developers are already at work with a background recognition apps that will be able to collect any data while another forground apps is running. So, it will happen. I challenge you to find another phone that does things as well and as elegant as the iPhone does. And I am sure if they are working on a future versions, it will only be even better.

It appears you are trying to reflect more of the bad of a product then the good, yes the iphone does have issues ,BUT the development platform is there there are some enormous error in your details that really you should have done your home work better ,but hopefully the real iphone users will just blow off your attempt to bash this product. Apple HAS ALWAYS started simply and then upgraded there products. This is why THERE simple to use out of the box ( for the most part) OS 3.0 will most like take in consideration EVERYONES needs and add everything you just ragged on and more. We could ALL fill a book on Micrsoft products ,but why bother ? Maybe before you put out a product bashing report you should do your homework better and consider how new the product is and know that it is still growing. p.s. 10+ reasons why this article is dumb. 1. Duh, it's just like an iPod..so why open it up to other music players..apple is out to make a profit..right? 2. Never before has a cell phone maker had such a phone..so of course they want full control. 3. It's there product..so why would they want something on there that would put a blemish on what they have? 4. Now this is getting boring and stupid..just like the above article. 5. Eh, so what. Hasn't bothered me yet. 6. Well the developers used apples dev software to make the apps..so why allow them to move it to another platform?? Here, take this dev software..make stuff for us..but then sell it to others too... 7. Personal opinion..people with a blue tooth in their ear at all times look like fools. 8. WOW! This is the one of the valid arguements! Go you! 9. Yet another valid statement. 10. And for the Trifecta! 3rd reason to hate iphone..but not 10+ 11. Who cares. 12. Duh..that's they way it's been and that's the way it'll stay for now.. This is stupid..I'm just venting b/c I'm tired of idiots..there are other choices out there. So if you don't like it..don't buy it...

Reporters are actually acting as if the iPhone is the only device out there and we, as consumers, are forced to buy it and use it...... The issues or shortcomings of the iPhone were well documented way before its release on July 11th. They are certainly even more documented by now. How anyone could possibly buy one and then complain about the device or Apple is beyond me. You have options besides the iPhone. Instead of whining about the iPhone, go buy one of those options and leave room on the news pages for REAL news.

What's new. Apple (read Jobs) has always been restrictive and that has served them well. It also works well for the copy-cats selling less costly but more open solutions to those unwilling to pay the price or suffer the controls. Been this way for over 20 years now.

Amazingly myopic opinion piece. It should be retitled "10 reasons why I hate the iphone". Only one "reason" given here has any kind of resonance with me, that of no copy and paste. The rest are pretty nonsensical and seemingly only important to developers. Simply put, if the writers of this opinion piece hate the iphone then don't buy or use it. Go ahead and buy/use the outdated Palm (which I finally and happily let go when my iphone replace my Treo) or the abysmally incompetent windows mobile devices.

Dave, true, this review might appeal more to Developers, but the opinions' ramifications affects consumers in the end. When a smaller pool of innovative (small) developers are contributing to the industry, it certainly affects what's available and possible to the consumer.

This article is not entirely true.. . 1. Since Amazon sells mp3s, one simply needs to import their mp3s into iTunes. 2. Per the corporate capabilities of iphone, businesses can install apps outside of iTunes. 3. As far as NetShare, it did come back up (for some time). Remember, Apple is working with one-hand tied behind its back working with a carrier. 4. ATT is more worried about loss of revenue from iphone apps than Apple. 5. One 3rd party app at a time is great since Apple is introducing a standard push methodology for all of them to receive notification. Windows is a great example of how I DONT want a bunch of home-grown programs running in the background. 6. NDA for patent purposes. If this is not understandable, then I would hate to have you as a business leader. 7. Bluetooth is a disappointment, but since the market is not big on stereo bluetooth headphones yet (because they are so expensive), I'm sure that's why it was not high on the list. 8. Copy & Paste. . . you might want to read transcripts from Apple's quarterly presentations. It was said that copy/paste was not high on the list. And oh, by the way, there is an app in the app store with copy/paste. 9. MMS - I send mms through email, works just fine. 9. Native MMS is something I believe ATT is worried about, not Apple. 10. Video recording was a bit of a disappointment, but there are jailbroken apps that do this. Also, if you are in corporate america they usually issue a phone without a camera (for business protection purposes). 11. Apple's Voice command? There are already a few voice dialers on the App Store. 12. Hardware locked to a carrier. This is a function of the US cell phone market. I just got back from India, and they are using jailbroken phones over there. Strategically, Apple did the best it could to have control over the phone + software to allow for more innovation and openness than other handset/carrier relationships offer. And it's not permanent, unlike the other carriers. Overall, imho, I would say that this article like the others tried to beat Apple up for doing what Motorola, Nokia, Palm, and Blackberry could not do, which was give more control back to hardware/software developers and to the public. They have done this in a years time. Apple having a lack of choices does not make it the attractive proposition. It's the simplicity that makes it an attractive proposition. "Blind them with brilliance or dazzle them with bull$#!+". All the choices just tells me that you can't give me anything decent. Sometimes people need 2-3 really good things to chose from instead of 10 mediocre things.

I'm hearing a lot of Apple apologists. Of course the iPhone is most intuitive 3G/WiFi device to come out of the mobile phone industry; the article asks why, with this innovative piece of hardware, Apple remains willing to let operating aspects of the phone be just as bad or worse than what's already out there? Why does this media fanboy frenzy persist that makes people afraid to criticize this product? The usability of add-on Apps is second-rate to Palm, and this is Apple's fault, not the developers. Palm is shrinking precisely because the Palm industry lacked the kind of consumer-driven (NOT just market-driven) devices that appeal to iPod users, and essentially halted consumer-driven development of its OS. Will Apple do the same to the add-on side of this device? Let's hope not. Phone manufacturers typically cripple Bluetooth in agreement with the carrier so that the carrier can charge for certain services that Bluetooth can perform for free. Apple has been praised for holding its ground in the agreement with AT&T, but then why is Bluetooth crippled on the device? There are valid criticisms to be made about this otherwise very exciting phone/internet/media device.

"Never before has a cellphone maker slammed the door to an open development enviornment and received nothing but praise for doing so" This isn't true either. The Symbian OS (used by Nokia phones) is in many ways even more restrictive than Apple's iPhone developer program. It's far more expensive to begin with and developers cannot even install their own apps on Symbian devices without a digital key from Symbian (now Nokia). Apple allows to install your app on 100 phones and more than that for larger companies. With Symbian, you have to buy a key per phone per app for testing and last time I checked they were in the vicinity of 200 or 300 US dollars. As a developer, I find Apple's model far less restrictive than Symbian. Also, the Symbian OS gives operators far more restrictive control over the phone than the iPhone OS. If your operator wants to lock down the phone so that you cannot even view your own photos, with Symbian they can actually do that, the iPhone doesn't give operators that much restrictive power. In the world of cell phones, restrictions are not really anything new, they are the norm. Compared to a PC, the iPhone may seem overtly restrictive, but compared to other cell phone systems, it is not. After all, cell phones are not PCs.

"You cannot use any SIM card with this GSM device". This has nothing to do with the device. Every GSM and every 3G phone can be SIM locked, it entirely depends on the operator and on the laws in the country where the phone is sold. In some countries there are laws that mandate that SIM locks must be removed after a certain time, for example in the UK it is after 3 months. In some other countries the law mandates that each phone must also be offered without SIM lock, for example in France. Where this is the case, the operators charge more for the version which is not SIM locked, because they subsidise the price of those which they do SIM lock. There are also countries where the are no laws that limit SIM locking and the operators can do whatever they want, for example Japan. In Japan every phone sold is SIM locked, not just the iPhone but every other phone, too. If you live in a country which does not have any laws that limit SIM locking, well that's your own fault then, at your country's next election remember to vote for politicians who are for competition and against protectionism.

The article states: "Would like to sync music from another store -- from Amazon, for example? You are out of luck." Well, this is 100% false. You can buy music from Amazon and upload it into the iPhone, no problem. Same for any other store which sells DRM free music. Simply drag and drop the downloaded music files onto your iTunes icon, sync and you're done, the music will be on your iPhone. Same for videos, although you may have to click on "convert video for iPhone" before you sync. Very simple, too.
