$100 Laptop to Get Windows XP

$100 Laptop to Get Windows XP

Techtree News Staff, Oct 29, 2007 1237 hrs IST

Microsoft is working on a basic version of Windows XP that will be compatible with the $100 (XO) laptop of the 'One Laptop per Child' (OLPC) foundation.

The much talked about $100 laptop, designed to work with the Linux operating system (OS), may soon incorporate Microsoft Windows software.

Microsoft is working on a basic version of Windows XP that will be compatible with the $100 (XO) laptop of the 'One Laptop per Child' (OLPC) foundation. The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R ADAG) will be bringing the XO to India.

During the Government Leaders Forum held in Washington in March 2006, Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, had publicly slammed the $100 laptop, saying that the last thing one would expect from a shared-use computer is the lack of a disk and the presence of just a tiny little screen.

Gates had said that hardware is only a small part of the cost of providing computing capabilities, while the big cost typically comes from network connectivity, applications, and support.

The same Microsoft is now looking to associate with the $100 laptop. The company is spending a not-so-small amount of money in getting Windows XP to run on the low specifications machines.

The speculation is that Redmond is afraid of losing out on a major chunk of young users in future. With OLPC laptops designed specifically to run Linux, and with the target being children, Microsoft feels children would adapt themselves to Linux software instead of Windows, hence the apprehension.

Upon being powered by Windows OS, the laptops would allow their child owners to modify the source code, making them compatible with both Linux and Windows XP.

That should be a great move by Microsoft. Children should be taught to have business sense and an eye on making money. Linux is mere communism - "I wont improve and wont allow you to improve too" ... Im strictly advocating Windows where ever i am and i have been successful to an extent.. Linux dominance would doom economic progress....

Yeah Great Move like Vista launch. Sooo Funny. Sad u r from chennai. MS is dooming the computing world making ppl more n more dumb. And of course restricting hardware makers to the max. Its funny the same ol Gates slammed the $100 laptop plan n now hez afraid kids will start their computing with linux n get hold of it. And he is working on a strip-down version(which can be found in any torrent site already).

dont know that would it be better to donate it through an organization or to an individual, So that those children get who can utilize it but cant afford it. Why not ask OLPC about it, say you want to donate both of them...

Another problem is too few people/govts are living up to their commitment to pay for them, so the cost is still high- $200. If this keeps up, they may have to accept a bribe from MS and use their OS, just to get them to the kids. To get the ball rolling, they are offering a 2 for 1 deal- one for you, one for the foundation, $400- in November. Go to XOGiving.org and add your email, they'll let you know.

That last paragraph is rather confusing. MS's XP would not generally allow owner to modify source I'd think. Please clerify.

Agreed. There is no way MS would possibly release the source code of a version of Windows, no matter how basic.

it is a tragedy that kids are taught MS windows and MS office in schools, CBSE encourages patented, proprietor y, pirated software

It is really sad to know that the gadget which was supposed to provide 'freedom' to children will bind them with some stupid patented software

Of course Microsoft wants their OS on this notebook destined for the hands of children, the same reason why a drug dealer will ofter you the first hit free. Nothing new here, same old Microsoft business practice as usual. The concept behind the $100 laptop is excellent, it's a shame that one corporation is trying to inject it's own agenda under the hood.
