$100 Laptop Gets EA's "SimCity"

More on Nicholas Negroponte's $100 laptop...

Game developer, Electronic Arts (EA), has announced donating its original 1989 classic, "SimCity", to the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Project.

A non-profit effort, the OLPC Project plans to put inexpensive and durable laptops into the hands of underpriveleged children in developing countries.

In "SimCity", players get to step into the shoes of mayor of a new city, and as such, are held responsible for building and maintaining amenities such as housing, schools, factories, shops, etc.

In a statement, EA said that by putting an 'unintentionally creative' game like "SimCity" onto each $100 (OLPC) laptop, it is not only providing children with a fun way to engage with their computers, but is also helping them develop their decision making skills while honing creativity.

OLPC's first machines went into production in China earlier this week. The first laptops are expected to be sent to countries, including Uruguay, Peru, Mexico, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Haiti, Cambodia, and India by the end of this year.
