Sony has unveiled its latest Walkman digital audio players, in a bid to compete with Apple Computer's iPod, with superior sound quality.

The company says that these latest Walkman players, which are flash memory-based, will be the first of Sony's digital music players to have built-in noise-cancellation technology. Sony has already implemented this technology in some of its headphones.

Speaking on the occasion, Hiroshi Yoshioka, senior vice president - Audio Division, Sony, said that in one sense, the products are competing against the iPod, but in another sense they are more about Sony's strengths. Sony has a lot of strength that Apple doesn't have, and this is a device that takes advantage of them.

The new Walkmans will let users upload music from a CD directly to the portable player without a computer. The music transfer will require an additional cable or cradle accessory to connect the Walkman to a CD player.

These Walkmans will also allow users to listen to about three-hours of music on a three-minute charge, and up to 50 hours on a two-hour charge.

Meanwhile, Sony plans to offer two models, a 2-gigabyte version for $200 (Rs.9,200 approx.) and a 1-gigabyte version for $170 (Rs.7,820 approx.). These two models will go on sale in the US next month.

iPod + iTunes + Pod Casting + Video + TV Shows + Movies + Photos + Your own content= Apple Market Dominance Sony + MS Zune = < 2% Marketshare (combined) FM is not a feature most ppl want in a US$200+ player. FM Radio costs US$.99 Why muck up the iPod with poor sound/reception and added complexity iPod? If you want any feature or add-on for the iPod it's available. The Sound Quality is a function of HeadPhones + Source File Bit-Rate - Sony is bundling mid-range phones with Sound Reduction. iPod's chief advantages (besides style and coolness) are ease of use, and ease of adding content -via iTunes. They don't need to make "Plays For Sure" promises (which are broken every day - ask anybody who has downloaded from Napster, Real, Walmart, etc and then couldn't play their DRM music. If you have a problem Apple will generally repair or place the iPod to your satisfaction. The Koreans and the Chinese aren't guaranteeing anything... MS is leaving them hanging out to dry with "Plays for Sure" That's why Real is teaming up with the Koreans to make their own player (great, ANOTHER 'standard') Sony offers Sony Connect - and finally MP3 playback. That's it. Sounds like another Betamax to me.

Both this and Zune sucks. No body is there to beat iPod. What ever they dream will never get realized.

Oh, then you have tested both Zune and Sony's new player? Please provide some support for your claim - especially the part where their dream will "never" be realized... sounds like an ipod freak to me

its quite easy to beat the iPod... if u can divert ur attention from it's design elements then u will notice that the iPod really has nothing to boast about... to a blind man an iRiver is a far better bargain than an iPod... now sony is out with their heritage Walkman series.. its a sure iPod killer....cant wait...

iPod's headsets are not the best, but Sony's has some to the best ear phones in the market. I am sure the new walkman will kill the iPod

The ipod lost their charm...they are now seeling more because of hugh advertising & peer presure factor...dozens of companies (iaudio / iriver / sony...) are producing much better players....he.ll the ipod could not even integrate a FM after all these years, dont waste your money of ipod plastic crap...

how can u say anything when u do not have a sample of the music? Costing should be still competitive, actually lower still, for Indian consumer.
