EXPERT REVIEW

Mercury is a pretty well known brand name in the market and most of our Techtree addicts familiar with cameras would have heard of Mercury's digital cameras. Kobian does pack a lot of features into their cameras even if it's a low end one. And as we had said in our review of the Mercury Deluxe Classic Cam a couple of days ago Kobian makes their cameras cheaper than others, but they're not all that high on quality.

We received the Mercury PocketCam, Kobian's low-end 3-in-1 camera that serves as a digicam, Webcam and a camcorder. It has a built in flash strobe, a ColourVGA (640 x 480 pixel) CMOS Image sensor.

The box contained the pocket camera, a USB cable, two CDs containing the pocket camera configuration software and another containing Ulead Systems Video Studio, a comprehensive manual, four AAA batteries, a stand and a camera strap. The stand had a cool shape and secured the camera well while it was being used as a Webcam.



The Features
The camera's design and even the interface of the bundled software resembled that of the Frontech Wonder Cam we had reviewed sometime back. Rectangle, small and plastic, and with a dimension of 3.5" x 2.4" x 1", the PocketCam can be slid into the tinniest crevice of your pants.

On the rear side of the camera is the mode button and a small display, which shows the image count and the chosen function, above which is the microscopic viewfinder and the flash toggle.

Out of the four AAA batteries, the upper two batteries are for the flash strobe and the lower two for the camera. This is a weird feature, because having four batteries combined would give the camera more power to run on than four separate batteries, as users would use the flash only when required, thereby making two batteries useless when the flash is not used.



The cameras functions can be browsed using the mode button; the chosen function is show on the display in its abbreviated form.

    Lr: Low resolution [QVGA Mode]
    St: Self-timer (10 Seconds)
    Ct: Continuous Snapshot
    CL: Clear All Pictures



Performance
The PocketCam supports two resolutions, 640 x 480 pixels and 320 x 240 pixels. It also has an enhanced XVGA resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. Having 64 Mbit of storage capacity, it can store 26 pictures at the 640 x 480 pixel resolution and 107 pictures at 320 x 240 pixel resolution. You can video stream images 9 fps at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and at 3 fps at 640 x 480 pixels.

The Image quality at both the resolutions was below average, the enhanced resolution is pretty much useless as the quality only becomes worse. The image quality while using it as a Webcam and a camcorder is kinda hard to describe, though my face did look like the Blair Witch. The flash though strong offers no relief to the poor quality of the images. However, the camera can give fairly decent pics if you have a steady hand and know how to judge you shots.

Conclusion
Despite its lackluster performance, for the price the camera comes at its quite decent. Priced at an MRP of Rs. 3,200, you should able to get for below Rs. 2,800.

The PocketCam is definitely and obviously not recommended for serious photographers, but a handy buy for anyone looking for a digicam+webcam+camcorder, as a good gift for your eager little brother.

Hey, all the people dont make a wrong decision. Never think of buying this product. This camera's biggest bottleneck is, it cant take out door pictures. Even the indoor pictures taken by this cam, are scattered. The bottom line is buying this type of bogus product is completely wastage of money.
