In this day and age of ever increasing browsers and their capabilities, many people are left unsure about what to choose. Most people are not aware why they use a particular browser. In an effort to educate our readers, we continue with our last week's series of browser reviews.

The latest browser to create a craze is K-Meleon. K-Meleon was originally written and developed by Christophe Thibault in the year 2000. It's built around the NGLayout engine (better known as Gecko) by using the MfcEmbed components of Mozilla. K-Meleon is still under development but even in its current form, it is able to perform tasks that would shame most of the widely used browsers at this time. The key behind developing this browser is to make a small, user friendly and easy to configure browsing tool. New features are added if they improve the performance and usefulness of the browser. Plans are to make K-Meleon a one-stop tool to do just about everything over the internet without the use of any external software.

Features
The modular design of K-Meleon is one of its strengths. K-Meleon is free, open source software released under the GNU General Public License. The extra functionality is added through plug-ins.
K-Meleon allows you to continue building up on your existing Internet Explorer Favorites or Opera Hotlist in place of or along with Netscape/Mozilla's Bookmark system. It also supports customizable mouse gestures which were introduced and popularized by Opera that offer an easy way to navigate the web. All the menus and toolbar buttons can be completely customized using its configuration files.

K-Meleon comes with a symbiotic loader which considerably reduces the time taken to open the application. Even though it utilizes the same machinery to turn web pages into graphical views as Mozilla, K-Meleon also utilizes some original work of the K-Meleon developers. Since it implements a native Windows user interface it is lighter and faster (more responsive) than other popular browsers. The only glitch here is that K-Meleon can run only on the Windows platform. This would be a boon for those computers that are below the minimum requirements for Mozilla.

The, so called "Browser War" is fought between feature-rich software that require reasonably powerful computer systems to run efficiently. K-Meleon browser is a very good alternative for those of us who cannot brag about the machines we have.

Some of the most interesting features of K-Meleon are the capability to integrate a Mail Client. This enables you to open the email client from within the browser itself with a single click. K-Meleon also has a Popup Blocking feature that gives users full control over which sites' pop-ups they want to block or enable individually. You can also choose to block images, ActiveX controls, Flash animations etc. thus putting you in complete control of whatever you browse. It is truly the 'Browser you control'.

The prob i see with k-meleon is that its not user-friendly enough.. the buttons are not intuitive nor are elements in the browser feel 'solid'.. Wish they can do a camino job, I'll dump firefox for that then..
