Windows Tips 'n' Tricks II

Windows Tips 'n' Tricks II

AVIs bringing your PC down? Vanishing system restores? Here's how to fix 'em and tweak the blues away!

Do's and Don'ts of System Restore

1. Understand that System Restore is not a complete backup. Don't expect your favourite song or movie to be backed up!

2. System Restore, being an incremental backup program, doesn't fully back up important files in one snapshot. It backs up only that which has changed from the initial backup. So if the system needs to be restored, then all Restore Points are necessary for restoration. Therefore if even one backup becomes corrupt, they're all useless ouch! Unless you create a restore point manually, of course.

3. You can set your System Restores to Off for drives other than C if you like. Windows has a bad habit of shoving System Restore points wherever it wants -- even onto portable devices -- which eats up space, and is not beneficial either, as portable devices aren't connected during the restoration process.

To do so...
a. Right-click My Computer and go to Properties.
b. Go to the System Restore tab.

c. Click on the drive in question and go to Settings.

d. Click Turn off.

5. Feel free to restrict system restore to utilize only a small percentage (5% should be enough) of the hard drive instead of the default 10%, which might be gigabytes of precious hard drive space for too many restore points:

a. Go to the System Restore tab.

b. Click on the C drive and hit Settings.

c. Bring the slider down to an acceptable size (such as 1 GB) reserved for System Restore.

That's it for this week. See you soon with another bagful of tricks!

2 things one should know about system restore....a. it never helps when u need it and b. as yogeshb329 from New Delhi says whenever ur pc is infected by anything when system restore is on...consider all ur restore points infected too...so as far as i see, i always disable the service as i call it a waste fo time and resources...however, many may not share my view but jus another peice of crap from microsoft..... hey dude this article is jus too basic and not that informative for many noobs who would be looking out for such stuff...

System Restore is always useful. Specially if u r person like doing R & D. If we are tweaking with some system settings or registry and accidentally u have done something wrong and didn't understand what to do, system restore will always become useful at that time.

And you have forgotten to mention a very critical disadvantage of System Restore. Everytime there's a viral or trojan attack, erst assured the goose for your PC is cooked and ready for disaster. S.R. will create back of each attack. Until you delete all the restore point you'll never be able to disinfact the machine. Go ahead talk to any vaccine designer and he'll advise to keep S.R. off particularly on your system drive such as 'C'
