A few tricks to make your life a little more simple

Ever wished for a quicker way to turn off Vista's Aero theme? Want to disable or enable Vista's UAC quickly? Tame Internet Explorer 7's "Run Once" page that refuses to run only once.

Internet Explorer 7's RunOnce which refuses to "Run Only Once"
It is great to see that Microsoft introduced Internet Explorer 7, which was a much-needed update to the long forgotten Internet Explorer 6. Among many new additions and changes, Microsoft also introduced RunOnce page, which is a neat way to customize settings such as default search provider, automatic phishing filter, activate ClearType, language selection and joining Customer Experience Improvement Program.

However, for some strange reason I couldn't make this page go away no matter what I did, and this certainly wasn't normal behaviour. I kept getting errors that wouldn't let me complete the RunOnce settings page - either the page appeared blank or would not load at all with a plain blue colour page or everything would work except the last "save your settings". Arrrghhhh! Thus began a search to eliminate this problem.

Disabling the "RunOnce" of IE 7 is quite easy, it is a simple registry trick. However, for those who don't want to dwell in the registry here
is a small app made for the same very purpose, aptly called IE 7 RunOnce Remover

Simply download the utility and double-click it. Click the Remove button. As a bonus, you can undo the change anytime you want.

For those who would prefer to brave the registry, here's how you do it.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry Main, the path is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

3. In the details pane on the right, double-click the

RunOnceHasShown registry entry. Enter 1 in the value data box. Click OK.
4. In the details pane, double-click the RunOnceComplete registry entry, enter 1 in the value data box. Click OK.

Remember both values for RunOnceHasShown and RunOnceComplete must be set to 1 otherwise the runonce page will start loading again whenever you launch Internet Explorer.

Better yet, I say use Firefox instead.

Im having Vista OS. While i start my laptop, 3 programs viz On-screen keyboard, MS Narrator & Magnifier starts automatically. Is there a way to stop all 3? I tried from start up menu but no use.

Go to Start->programs->Accessories->Utility manager. This is the one which is used to configure the on screen keyboard, magnifier etc. There is an option to disable them during start up. It is available in certain editions of Vista. Just try it out.
