A few tricks to make your life a little more simple

Quickly Disable/Enable Vista's UAC

Vista's UAC is an added layer of security to stop viruses and spyware in their tracks. Depending on my mood, it is a great help while at the same time a pain. This leaves me in a dilemma - to switch it off or not to switch it off. I'm sure a geek would tell you to 'turn the damn thing off' and this would be perfect advice for those who know what is going on in their system. But, fact remains, most users don't. And, no matter how careful you are, viruses and spyware do crop up occasionally.

I could really do with the UAC switched off when I'm installing or changing a setting, which would throw a gazillion UAC windows at me. For normal computer operation, it's best to leave the UAC on as a warning mechanism. Turning off the UAC is a pain as you need to go through many clicks. That is, until I found this little command line trick to do the same with just a double-click.

The command lines are:

To disable UAC:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

To enable UAC:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

The lines are rather long, so to make the job easier, we'll make batch files that will automatically do the trick.

To do so:
1. Open Notepad, copy and paste only the "disable UAC" line.

2. Now click Save As.

3. Choose All Files not the default ".txt".

4. Give a convenient name such as Disable UAC and suffix it with .bat. So the entire filename will look like Disable UAC.bat

Do the same for enabling UAC, calling it Enable UAC.bat.

How to use it

Simple double-clicking of the file will not work as you do not have administrator privileges. You'll instantly get an "Access is denied" error.

1. Right-click the batch file that you created and select Run as Administrator.

2. You'll get a warning from Windows, but don't worry just click Run.

3. If you've done it right, The Operation completed sucessfully would appear.

There is only one drawback of this method, if you want to re-enable UAC, a computer restart would be required. Darn! This cannot be circumvented, as it is by design. But well, at least, it's quicker to disable and enable than before. Don't you think so?

Until next time, Happy Computing!

Im having Vista OS. While i start my laptop, 3 programs viz On-screen keyboard, MS Narrator & Magnifier starts automatically. Is there a way to stop all 3? I tried from start up menu but no use.

Go to Start->programs->Accessories->Utility manager. This is the one which is used to configure the on screen keyboard, magnifier etc. There is an option to disable them during start up. It is available in certain editions of Vista. Just try it out.
