Quickly turn Aero Off and On

Windows Vista has a real nice interface called "Aero". However, no matter what Microsoft tells you, it does occupy more system resources. This is not an Aero-centric issue per se, but any skinning on default Windows GUI will always occupy more resources.

Sometimes turning off Aero to free system resources for graphic intensive applications such as games can really help. But doing that is a long process, so wouldn't it be nice to just flick a switch to turn Aero off and on?

Thankfully there is a simple switch. All we have to do is make a quick shortcut to it. Here's how

1. Right-click on the desktop, select the New | Shortcut from the context menu.
2. When the Create Shortcut wizard appears, type:
Rundll32 dwmApi #104 in the text box, click Next.
3. Call the shortcut something by which you can understand it like
"Turn Aero Off", click Finish.

Try out your new shortcut, it's cool, isn't it! But the job is only half-done, now to make a shortcut to turn Aero back on.
1. Launch the Create Shortcut wizard again and this time type:
Rundll32 dwmApi #102 in the text box.
2. Call it "Turn Aero On", click Finish.

Ahh! Now I can peacefully get back to my gaming again.

Im having Vista OS. While i start my laptop, 3 programs viz On-screen keyboard, MS Narrator & Magnifier starts automatically. Is there a way to stop all 3? I tried from start up menu but no use.

Go to Start->programs->Accessories->Utility manager. This is the one which is used to configure the on screen keyboard, magnifier etc. There is an option to disable them during start up. It is available in certain editions of Vista. Just try it out.
