Office 2007 Compatibility

Love your old Microsoft Office too much, and don't feel the need to go for the spanking new Microsoft Office 2007? You aren't alone! Even I'm an ardent user of Microsoft Office 2003, the last version before Microsoft got all fancy. As you might already know, new technology often brings in changes to already-existing, already-good software. Microsoft decided to support a new format called Office Open XML as the default file format, moving away from their own propriety document format, with Office documents ending in an added letter x, such as .docx for Word documents.

This new format cannot be read on older Office systems unless you install the Office Compatibility Pack, which converts the new format to the older ones that dinosaur applications such as my Office 2003 can read (I already feel old). Note the download is 27.5MB.

For those in no mood to do that hefty download and install it, there is a simpler option: online sites that help you do the same thing. Simply upload the file, hit Convert, and voila -- the file is converted; just download it! The best site for this is Zamzar (talk about weird names!). It is a free online conversion site that offers numerous conversion options, not just limited to documents -- you can also convert images, videos, and compressed files such as .tar. On the other hand, Docx2doc (no prizes for guessing what this does) only does what it says (convert Word files).

I do need to caution you though: don't upload private, confidential, or sensitive files to remote servers. It's better to download the official Microsoft Compatibility Pack once and for all and be done with it. In fact, the pack can be installed on all the computers in an office so that there are no interoperability problems between various Office versions.

You sure cannot export the autocorrect options, but you can surely carry it around when switching computers... i simply copy the entire folder C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft and replace it in a new system.. just be sure to close MS Word before replacing the folder... there.. its done.. now open word and u have the autocorrect entries from your old system.... BTW.. IF U THINK 2003 IS A DINOSAUR.. I PERSONALLY LIKE 2000.. wot wud u call it... ;)

Office 2003 may be a dinosaur, but it is much more stable and usable than the not-so-new mutant on the block--office 2007

2K3 sucks compared to 2K7. 2K7 is a complete makeover.

You can also use PhraseExpress instead of autocorrect.
