Building the Best Midrange Gaming PC - Ver: 10.05

Ameya Dalvi, Oct 28, 2005 1024 hrs IST

Today we plan to choose components with the best price-performance ratio in the mid-range segment .

Next Page

Hard Disk: 160 GB 7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda (Rs 3,800)
We will stick to the tried and tested 160 GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive. It is arguably the best value-for-money hard drive currently available. It offers one of the best MB-per-Rupee ratio and is available for Rs 3,800. 160 GB is a respectable amount of space for any sane thing that you plan to do today on your PC. Also you can always attach more hard drives if you seem to be running out of space. There are ample SATA ports on the motherboard to do the same.

Monitor: ViewSonic E72f+ or LG Flatron E700S-H (Rs. 6,800)
Now that the price difference between the regular 17" inch monitors and the flat variants is just about a thousand Rupees, we chose to go with a true flat screen 17" CRT monitor for its finer dot pitch and that extra bit of sharpness. The recommended models are ViewSonic E72f+ or LG Flatron E700S-H. Both these monitors have similar specifications and perform equally well and happen to be two of the best 17-inch monitors that we ever tested. The availability of both the models is pretty neat in most of the cities and either of the two would be a good choice.

Graphic Card: BIG GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E (Rs. 8,500)
The GeForce 6600 GT cards are by far the best value for money midrange graphic cards available here. The one from BIG sells for as low at Rs 8,500 and with its 500 MHz core and 1 GHz effective GDDR3 memory, packs enough punch for your gaming needs. It is capable of running most of today's games seamlessly at 1024 x 768 with medium AA and AF setting. Based on nVidia's GeForce 6 series CPU, it supports all the current feature sets including Shader Model 3 and has a fair bit of headroom for the future.

The Gainward Ultra/1960 PCX XP 128 MB GS GLH based on the same chipset but with higher clock speeds is another excellent buy but availability is a major issue.

AMD Sempron 64 2500+ and MSI matching motherboard is only viable option along with 256 MB Hynix DDR Ram. In your budget all these can be bought if you can compromise on performance. As you have stated you have SD Ram system I assume that quality is not a preference to you.

,Noida, on Nov 21, 2005 11:08 AM
Hi Alpa, AMD is the best thing to buy now, its like comparing an ESTEEM (AMD) with a SANTRO (P4). Both are good, however u know the differences. Nothing more could be said 'bout.
Saw
,Nerul, on Nov 21, 2005 02:43 PM
Dude don't go for what people buy.THey would not be knowing much abt comparing cpus.I have been using an amd processor for the past 2 and a half yrs and not once it has given me any problems and its performance has absolutely been top-notch(Other than the occasional virus attack which is os related and not cpu).I recently upgraded to a athlon 64 3200+ on msi k8n neo mobo. Now my rig simply rocks!!!.The effects on new games and stuff are simply amazing even with all settings cranked upto the max.Its definitely better than any of my collegues p4 .Better not only in games and multimedia but even in office applications. It works at light speed if u know what i mean.MOst of my cz clan members envy my new comp anyway.
Saw
,Nerul, on Nov 21, 2005 02:49 PM
Arrycom dude your sadly mistaken!.Its not like comparing an esteem to a santro but more like comparing a bullet train!(AMD) to a ferrari(Intel).
anubhav
,Indore(miny mumbai), on Jan 02, 2006 02:24 PM
U r thinking in right way alpa!AMD is quite good as compare to intel p4s when it comes to gaming.U will have better experience or say best with AMD processor with suitable mobo.On the other Intel p4's are best 4 other works like 4 multitasking, muli user, heavy uploading and downloading etc.. but not so much convinsing in gamings. So decide whether u want to purchase pc for mad gaming or for other purpose.I m a student i have one pc with amd and asus como and other old power one with intel p4 (mainly 4 dad's office work) and trust me i m more than satisfied with both.

Well i have an amd athlon 64 3500+.I have a dfi lan party mobo(the best) which my dad got from singapore and a 6800 gtx.Let me tell ya it runs like a dream. It can even run a game like F.E.A.R with 4x aa smoothly at 1600*1200 res .I think its the best thing for gamers who want to run those power crunching applications which require a lot of resources. It definitely better than my freinds 3.4 ghz ee whose comp lags at times while playing games and becomes very hot.Hell my cpu rwemains cool even after 4 hours of gaming at only 46 c.So obviously amd is the best and I only buy the best.People say intel has 2mb of cache, but ley me tell ya with amd hyper transport technology it beats stuffing out of intel at anything u throw at it despite the high cache where it communicates with the ram at a high speed of 14.4 gbps!(tats why even the athlon 64 3000+ is faster than intel 3.4 ghz in ut2004).Morever intel would probably crash if u overclocked it a bit as it runs hot anyway.

Has anybody used this ASUS A8N-E Motherboard, bcoz I've heard that this MB has a problem with it's Chipset Fan that spins at a very high speed and creates noise that literally dies out within 3-4 months. But this one is definitely goodone in terms of features, stability and performance. Plz let me know if anybody had been using this board for quite a long time.

Yes you are correct Arnov. If you have one of the older A8N-E's your little chipset fan is loud and won't last long. mine died in 4 months. I asked asus for a new one and got a bigger and better one for free in less then 2 weeks. If you have decent cooling you can go without your chipset fan for quite awhile. I still used my computer and it didn't run for over a month.

BenQ DW1640 DVD REwriter is better than LITE on SOHW and costs the same. (Rs 3000). XFX 6600GT is really good. I am playing quake 4 at high quality, 1024x768. FEAR does'nt play well with high quality custom settings. (20-30 fps).

Interesting recommendation: BIG GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E card... In the forums there seem to be many who are shy of using the BIG brand of cards, and there seem to be no benchmarks anyhere. Ameya: How good are these cards anyway, since you obviously had a chance to check them out.? Regards

Good configuration, good review, good job. Just assembled a AMD 3200+ w/same board and SATA drive. it rocks. AMD seems to be a better option over Intel. Prices mentioned here are amazingly low.

And yea...64 bit editions are not the 'moot' point. I have worked on Intel and AMD. AMD Athlons will give you much better price to performance ratio. Intel even after being assaulted will still try to act traunt and think consumers are interested in their products!

for the price mentioned here i can have a monster if i were to source the components from the US. I dont know why 'supposed third world' countries like India have to pay a f@kin premium when we buy any electronic components from India. And less said bout the quality the better!!

I've always seen in these reviews AMD64 processor being used... but tell me... is it of any use unless you use a 64-bit operating system? And, I'm pretty sure most of the buyers are going to get a pirated copy of the usual x86 windows software... (of course I'm assuming that these 'gamers' aren't going to run 64-bit OSes such as GNU/Linux or FreeBSD) could the reviewer say something here please?

Even in 32bit mode, this cpu beats the pants off of anything from Intel in that pricer range, so what's the matter if they use it again and again? It deserves to be used again and again...

I agree, any thing good can and will be a repeat winner. All my Gaming machines (15 of them) are AMD 2800+. They are blazing fast AND stable. And look at their versatility, I will be hiring the spare capacity at nights to 3D design BPOs at Hyderabad(so they will run almost 24/7) and yet I am confident that there will be no issues!

so you guys haven't realised the actual potential it's got in '64-bit mode'?

I think you should put some kind of date, rather then the version number. Version 10, 11, 12... doesnt sound right in the long run. It would be better if u name it like, "Best Mid Range Gaming PC, 4th Quarter, 2005"

On the Keyboard & Mouse issue, best is to go for Combo Plan: Microsoft Internet Keynoard+Optical Mouse - Rs. 880/-, Logitech Internet Keyboard + Mouse - Rs. 740/- and iKey Keyboard + Mouse - Rs. 550/-. Isn't that great. Courtesy Computer Empire, 201, meghdoot building, Nehru Place, New delhi

Always go for a SATA Hard Disk whose transfer rate is relatively much faster than the normal ones and this Motherboard supports a maximum speed of 3 Gb/s with its NForce 4 Ultra Chipset.

The rates quoted for the accessories are very low compared to the market rates. We as a Reseller buying a MOQ of 10 Nos. paying atleast 5-10% more price than what is mentioned in your articles. How is this possible? Are the vendors/distributors cheating upcountry dealers/reseller? You may write an article about this.

Hey guys one suggestion Please don't go for this Motherboard. Although this is one of the best Boards in terms of Overclocking Features and Performance but the Motherboard Fan is of very low quality, it spins at a very high speed andproduces a lot of noise and literally begins to die after 2-3 months of time.
