Good gamers need to extract the maximum performance from their gaming hardware, the most important one being the graphics card. Today ATI is one of the two leading graphics card manufacturers in the world, the other being NVIDIA. There are far fewer tools available to tweak ATI hardware, one of the primary reasons for this is that the ATI drivers, also known as Catalyst, provide more than enough options to tweak your graphics card till it sweats. In this article, we are going to show you ways to achieve that extra edge over your rivals, by tweaking your ATI graphics card.

We assume that you are using an ATI graphics card which is no older than the RADEON. Though you can use any recent Catalyst or modified driver, we are going to stick to the latest official version. We will attempt to cover all the important aspects of the Catalyst Control Panel (henceforth referred to as CCC). You can get the latest ATI Catalyst drivers here. Select the OS, and then select the type of ATI graphics card.

Catalyst Control Panel

To open the CCC, right-click on the system tray icon and click on Catalyst Control Panel. When you open the CCC for the first time, you will be asked whether you want to use the Basic or Advanced view. We suggest that you choose Advanced view since it enables greater control and also check the box "Don't show this page again" and click Next.

Taking a stroll around the CCC

We shall have a brief look at the row of buttons at the top of the CCC, before we go on to the Graphics Settings. The Profiles button launches the Profile Manager, where you can save your current set of preferences under a profile name. This allows you to use different graphics card setting in different circumstances. Click on the Profiles button, select Profiles Manager and save your profile using any name.

Graphics settings

Now let us examine the Graphics Settings, the meat of the CCC.

Display Manager

Under Display Manager, you can force detection of a connected display if it is not detected. You can also make adjustments to the resolution, color depth and refresh rate. Adjustments can also be made to the orientation of the display.

Display Options

Under the Display Options, you can choose the display detection procedure, which can either be every time the CCC is launched or it can be done manually. You can also force detection of devices such as a connected TV or component video device by checking the appropriate checkboxes.
