Today, we look at the segment that most mobile users look forward to upgrading to or when looking to buy a new handset. Every other person who enters a mobile shop to buy or exchange his/her mobile looks at a budget of 10K; so, we decided to provide you all a list of phones a little over as many don't mind shelling a little more as for a one time investment at least for a period of one year. We will go in the same order of the international standings of the market share of mobile handset companies.
Nokia
First up are Nokia handsets; no denying the fact that they are struggling to maintain this position. There are a lot of handsets to choose from, that too just from this one company. To reduce the pain for the end user, we decided to do away with old handsets and the handsets that almost render useless in today's time. But if you wish to, you can still go ahead and buy them, no holds.
Nokia 5300 (Rs. 11,500)
In order of the series, the first one is the 5300 from Nokia, a recently launched phone, marketed as a music phone. It is a tri-band phone and has a 256K color screen. The phone is a slider form factor. It features music playback hotkeys on the edge of the phone and an expandable microSD memory slot with 5 MB of internal memory. Other features include a 1.3 MP camera, Bluetooth v2.0, EDGE, miniUSB, and FM radio. The phone has a talktime of 2.5 hours and a decent standby time for music playback.
If you find this phone a little too expensive you can go for the 5200, which was launched at the same time. It has a CSTN screen instead of a TFT and a VGA camera for a 1.3 MP camera and the simple Bluetooth v1.1. This offers also the same amount of battery life and a single music playback hotkey. For 2.5K less, if on a tight budget, it is an ok option.
Nokia 6131 (Rs. 11,250)
The Nokia 6131 is the only clamshell we have from Nokia. This is a quad-band GSM phone and has earlier been reviewed by us. Even then briefly, it has a 16M color display, and a secondary display of 256K colors. The phone has an internal memory of 15 MB and a microSD expansion slot. Other features are a host of connectivity options, a 1.3 MP camera, MP3/MP4 player, and an FM Radio as well. The phone has a great keypad and the only problems were poor battery life and the button open click noise.

Hi Folks, Samsung is theeee most sucking phone in this world. The battery life sucks like anything. Almost all samsung brands in the market are really waste. I have gone through many reviews and personally had 4 mobile phones and really speaking they have the worst market, I even got this information froma almost 13 dealers from many cities. Never get impressed by the color display they give, the colr display eats up almost everything that ur battery has to offer you. the poorest is the signal that you receive in samsung phones. Its better they shutdown their cell market and concentrate in washing machins market. Hey samsung this cell market is going to throw away you gius... so better quit your self...

Hey all you guys. I wonder why is the LG KG 200 (Dynamite) phone is not included in the review. The KG 300 is there but the review is not encouraging. It seems techtree does not recommend it. I mean, what's wrong with those phones. It doesnot look good but all the features within 8k (Kg 200) makes it the best buy in my book. You can buy a 1 GB MicroSd memory card for Rs 2000 (price confirmed) and have a great phone for a total of 10k. I have searhed the internet throughly for any other phones like this and only the Samsung X-700 comes close with a price tag of Rs. 8900 (as of Dec 2007 in Kolkata)and some additional features like EDGE and Bluetooth. Dont get me wrong but I am talking about phones 9K-10K, otherwise SE K750i is definitely a winner within 12K. Thanks to Techtree for such a wonderful review. Please reply if anyone feels the same way about the KG 200 or may you suggest some other options?

i agree fully with you...the lg kg 200 is now available for just around rs 6300 (delhi, jan 2007) and add a memory card for 1500 bucks and u have a winner...the looks are good and though it doesnt have bluetooth, it does pretty well with features like fm recording, voice call recording and inflight operation doubling up as a data storage device. anyone with problems with the kg200 please let me know as i am contemplating buying it pronto

Beware of buying the grey market products be it mobile phones or memory cards or any other electronic products. Although the prices in grey market are attractive but the stuff they sell is duplicate. Yes you have read right, all the grey market electronic stuff is duplicate. The product is made in unauthorized smaller factories in China and exported to India without labels. Then our great Indian seller thugs get the phones labelled and boxes made and sell to innocent people like you and me. Since I have come to know of this racket, I will tell to everyone. Also this grey market stuff goes bad after sometime and we blame the company for a bad product which they never made in the first place. All these companies have ruined their business by transferring their manufacturing technology in China. Chinese people have replicated everything. So if you are getting a memory card or mobile very cheap without bill, God can only help you with your duplicate goods purchase.

I-Mate has the lousiest service back up amongst all. I had a Jamin, and its ring went mute. I gave it for service, and was stunned to know they send phones by bus to their service center in Bangalore. The phone was lost for a while, and they gave me a standby, where the ring was defunct as well. Then they gave me a second stand-by and that also had problems in the display (three bands of colors only being displayed). Finally my original phone was traced ten days later!! I have used O2, I Paq, Samsung PDAs and never had such issues. Een the same handset (under different brands), made by the same OEM manufacturer is available at half the price in Singapore. It looks good, but if you are looking for dependable phones, and service - I would never suggest my friends to use I-mate. Their service (provided by some third party) is horrendous.

If any one asks me, I will undoubtly say that a person who wants to buy a cell phone in this budget should buy the Z710i because it is I guess the only phone in this budget that has really good features. Rest is up to the buyer. But I would like to advise the buyer to choose wisely. motorola RAZR v3i is a good choice for those who love music.It has 10 minutes video recording capacity and has a 1.3 mega pixel camera.Its speaker phone feature is superb.Really it has all good features.

couple of other friends n i, myself have the w550i n v r selling it coz it picks-up lots of background noise. the person at the other end cannot hear us clearly ... only traffic noise !!! we contacted SE service centre many times n gave it for repairs but no help. my cousin who is the marketing manager at Salora international 9official dealers of Se in india) says almost all their phones have the problem as they r designed mainly for european markets where noise pollution levels r much lower. further more , he himself refuses ti use a SE

Thanx a ton for the information with the updated market price...but its too late coz i got Nokia 6233 just on the 15th Dec2006 evening within 13K(12,850).Its awesome...comes with a CD which gives a complete information to the user about the Ph.'s different usages.The phone also displays information on usages when asked for it.

Surprisingly the review missed Samsung X630, it is the most feature loaded phone of Samsung in the lower end, RS.6499. It has Camera Video Capture Music Player FM Radio Bluetooth Infrared EDGE Speaker Headset..apart from limited memory(which may alone be a great problem) I could not find any error that should keep the phone out of the review...But I also blive tht thr must be proper reasons(bcs of which techtree left out the ph)....I would really like to know the reason

SE W700i is really an excellent piece. I switched over from Nokia, Nokia and Nokia world and am happy I did. It has all the features or better than N series phones, which an average or more than average phone user needs. Leave alone the freaks who have nothing else to do than play with mobiles. U can also attach small speakers of SE to listen the music loud or better attach to ur sound system. All the cables comes bundled as OE, not like Nokia, where u must buy all separately.

well agreed as u see SEw550i is the only phone with 3 speakers in that price category So watt if its not havin expandable memory but its havin the best sound quality in terms of external speaker . And as there are many useless phones like k608i in this review it wud have been betta to include 550i

People, I had considered buying a simple mobile, SE K310i, then heard about the K320i (with Bluetooth) and now consider pushing my meagre finance limits to buy a K510i. I'm worried it looks uninspiring and so old-looking. What should I go for? I don't need an exhorbitant walkman phone, just a simple mobile with camera. I'm a college student - Suggest a model for me, around Rs.6K. Thank you.

Go for SE K310 or K320, the best Blockbuster under 6K. You will get more than any other mobile in this range. Battery life is also quite good. Display is outstanding and audio quality is also good. Phone supports almost everything. I will give it 9/10.

nokia 6630 is good... u can buy a nokia AUDIO jack and a mmry card.. and voila.. it works just fine for all ur needs.. also while buying get ur firmware upgraded or upgrade it from nokia's uk site
