Makes for use-and-throw electronics
The problem with the quest for cheap electronics is that they need silicon no matter what, and good silicon can only get so cheap. If you wanted to see your favorite magazine dish out an anniversary issue with the title in lights, forget about it--there's too much money involved.
However, now that researchers at the New University of Lisbon in Portugal have developed the paper transistor, this might actually be possible. While many before them have experimented with the idea of fabricating transistors on paper, Elvira Fortunato and her team have found a way to use paper as a crucial component of the transistor itself. There is still work to be done, considering that paper isn't the easiest material to use for electronics, but if it works, we could see a whole new era of electronic trinkets that don't cost much. Like the blinking LED on Pink Floyd's Pulse DVDs. Or maybe said magazine's name in lights. Boundless possibilities, and all that.
