More Juice Up Ahead

Could there be hope for ye who run out of power?

A new startup called ZPower promises to end our battery woes in the near future, with their new silver-zinc batteries. In a package the same size as a regular lithium-ion battery, silver-zinc batteries will provide 40% more energy, they claim. Moreover, the risk of your battery going boom in your lap is completely eliminated--silver-zinc doesn't do that. Even environmentalists will have reason to rejoice--about 95% of the batteries' parts can be recycled, so contributions to the Apocalypse will be at a minimum.

Silver-zinc isn't new technology--it's just that the batteries' tendency to short circuit after a few recharges limited their appeal somewhat. After all, you don't want your cell phone going up in flames every weekend, do you? ZPower solves this problem by using special polymers in the chemical mixture that prevent this from happeneng.

After all these years of research, a 40% increase is a bit of a disappointment, we must admit--we've gone from desktop to laptop to Mobile Internet Devices, and all we get is 40% more power? Tsk, tsk. On the other hand, it means about an extra hour of laptop use--ought to come in really handy on those boring flights.
