We reviewed the Wonder Cam from Frontech last week; it was 4,000 rupees cheaper than the Regal Cam. So what extra features does the Regal Cam offer?
Tearing through the package...
The first thing that struck me about this camera was that it was pretty compact. Featuring a dimension of 93(W) x 56(L) x 38(H) mm, it was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. At the same time, it did not skimp on any feature, and had quite a few buttons on the back panel to play with.
The contents of the package included the camera, a pouch, a user manual, 2 AA sized alkaline batteries, a TV OUT Cable, a USB cable, a camera driver and software CD, and a wrist strap. It pretty much had all that you could possibly need to get started.
The build quality of the Regal Cam was better than the Wonder Cam — it had an LCD display, the ability to be used as a Web cam, and Fine Hardware Interpolation, which lets you capture at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The built-in 8 MB flash memory could save up to 15 images at a resolution 1600 x 1200 pixels, 20 images at 1024 x 786 pixels and 65 images at 640 x 480 pixels. It could also capture one minute of video and audio at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels at 15fps. The camera also had a 2x digital zoom, which was pretty useless, since the image quality wasn't very impressive when zoomed.
Most digital and Web cam combos do not offer colour features that the Regal Cam does. Thanks to many tweakable options, you could optimize the image quality in various ways. The internal strobe mode had the Red-eye reduction feature, and the configurable White Balance had four modes: Auto, Tungsten, Fluorescent Lamp, and Sunlight. You could also adjust the exposure value on a scale of -2 to 2 as well.

We were able to get started without any hassles and connected to the PC after installing the drivers and software suite (Arcsoft Photobase 3, PhotoImpression 3, VideoImpression 1.6). You have the dual option of choosing to connect to the PC either as a Web cam or a Mass Storage device. Under the Mass Storage device mode, the camera showed up as a drive letter, from where you could copy all the pictures onto your PC. You could use Arcsoft PhotoImpression 3 to do to the same, where you could crop, rotate or email the captured images.
The LCD screen was useful for reviewing pictures and configuring the camera, but wasn't too clear or crisp. The controls of the camera were handy; it was ergonomic and compact. At the highest resolution, you had to wait for at least 4 seconds for the image to be captured. The camera seemed to perform best under daylight conditions, when the digital zoom was not employed.
We were able to capture about one minute of video in the CIF format at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The frame rate wasn't too impressive at 15 fps, and the duration was just too small to really impress. An additional SD card in the memory slot would probably help in supplementing this feature; otherwise it's just impractical. With Arcsoft VideoImpression 1.6, you could capture video under the CIF or VGA format using any codec for compression. We tested the Regal Cam under the PC cam mode by using MSN Netmeeting. It worked without any problems and offered better clarity than most Web cams. If you have good bandwidth, this can stream high-resolution video for you.
Conclusion
As a midrange digital camera, the Regal Cam is a pretty handy thing to have. Priced at an MRP of 12,000 rupees, it's a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. If you are looking for a camera with decent picture quality that can double up as a Web cam, you should seriously consider this.

Hi ! I installed the frontech web cam JL 2215 on my dell notebook XP. It's installed, but during installation XP popped up a message that the driver has not passed the windows XP logo. 12000 for a 1.3 MPxl cam with web capacity sounds steep! The writeup does not touch up on whether the camera is compatible with anyother kind of memory (smartmedia, compactflash, xD, microdrive, etc) ; The memory expansion limits (128 MB? 256 MB? 512 MB? 1 GB?) ; Is there a PAL/NTSC option on the video out signal ; The biggest print size that can be done from this camera ; Does it have autofocus/multipoint focus ; Does it have multiple shooting modes ; What is the battery consumption with the LCD on ; Is it compatible with Ni-MH rechargeble batteries ; Does it come with a battery charger ; How many picture quality settings are available - Normal, Fine, Superfine, etc ; Is there any other video format available - Mpeg, Avi Quicktime etc; Is the picture output available in Tiff format; how capable is the picture editing software that comes with the camera ; any carrying case options to take the camera out on field trips ; so on and so forth. To make a digicam worth anything, there is a horde of add-ons that have to be added on to it, which never get advertised - memory, batteries, charger, lens etc etc. Considering this, and that the base camera already costs a stupendous Rs 12000, I think it is a rip off. Like someone else mentioned below, bid on EBay and get cameras atleast 2-3 times more capable, far better in technology and better equipped for the same money. :-)

June 2003. Hi. I have just bought Umax AstraPix 460. This regal cam thing looks exactly the same from the LCD display side. Just no difference. I wonder if tech tree is showing correct picture. If it is, then its Chinese manufacturers at work ! Umax 460 I got for Rs. 7.5K, tax paid. One drawback is no viewfinder, only LCD screen. The optical viefinder is required as well especially at night u know with flash, pics wud come alright but nothing coming in LCD due to poor light even with correct white display type. It supports SD card till 512 MB. Built in 8Mb flash memory. No battery charger but I guess all such cameras accept NiMH batteries ( I have written to them and waiting for reply). I could not figure out how to use digital zoom. I will appreciate if any one can help. The user manual cud have been better. No stand with camera. Picture quality at 1.3 itself is quite good but i havent printed at 200 or 300 pixels. U can safely print 5*7 at 200 pixels or upto 4*6 at 300 pixels. Clicking at low resolution VGA mode or 1.3M made is quick. But when u click at 2.0 mega pixel hardware interpolation mode, it takes quite some time - so u need steady hands at that resolution. But at mid range Rs. 7500 street price I found the camera useful, if u want to save 4,000 from superior Kodak 4300 type camera. All this description I have told is of Umax Astra 460 but fits just fine for this regal cam. I checked the price of regal cam in Delhi - its around 7.5 k only with bill.

Hi. It supports fine and normal at 1600(interpolated), 1200 or 640 reso. CMOS is 1.3 but Umax display 460 as 2.0MP camera. No audio features - which is a good thing as most of cams have poor audio quality. It supports AVI only in video, and jpg in still. Lens is f 8.5mm, F 3.5. No lens cover. No stand. No Tiff output. Arcsoft software is adequate. Works fine as webcam or PC cam. The connectivity thing not properly explained in manual so for a normal beginner, not from computers field, there are going to be teething troubles. But picture quiality is good as I explained earlier. I hope all other readers will benefit from my lecture. Good points are White balance and Exposure compensation +-2E in Half Stop increments (if u follow photographic jargon). Biggest drawback - No optical viewfinder, thats the problem with a whole of such small cameras - they provide just one method, either viefinder or LCD, whereas both wud make operation very easy. Battery consumption is quite low as compared to some of even top line models of diff makes.

Hi Mohan, I've mentioned the Red eye reduction feature in my review, the other flash modes being Auto and OFF. Are Auto and OFF functions that critical? :-)

I think products like these must be sold in Crawford market or Manish market. Not worth displaying on the internet. I think, junks like these are a waste of money. Better to invest that money in a bank.

I bought a Kodak 4300 a 3.2 megapixle camera ,2x digital zoom at 11000 and I feel it is an excelent buy at this price . The results are simly supurb. It is compatible with Ni-MH rechargeble batteries .A separate charger cost me 450.Take Hi resu , medium reso and low reso phots.The low resolution phos also have excelent quality.

For 12000 bucks its ultra expensive :-( Try the Mercury Delux Classic instead ...I am using it right now !! It has all the functions mentioned above and more !! Also it is a 2.1 megapixel camera ..The best part is the price ..7500/- ..awesome eh !!

Buy a HP from abroad or the import shops and it will be a lot cheaper. a HP 2.1 Mega Pixel camera with basic features will cost only about 100 USD. Other unknown or lesser known brands will be even cheaper. Why spend 12000 Rs (250 USD approx) on this ?

I think the person who has done this review either does not know what a Digital camera or any camera for that matter is or he thinks he is very smart. How can you just mention Red eye reduction and not say whether the Flash is Auto or Off!!!!! Geez

It seems you have never used a camera yourself....pick up one of the cheapest 'ANALOG' cameras and you are bound to find the ability to turn flash 'OFF'..or let it be at 'AUTO'... These are such trivial things that aren't even worth wasting words on..
