I still remember the time when 56 kbps modems had become a rage many years ago. Though dial-up internet wasn't the best way to connect to the internet - due to traumatizing phone bills, busy phone lines, sub-10KB/s download speeds etc. -- it was the only way back then. We have come a long way since then, as broadband internet is catching on fast, thanks to local cable-wallahs and phone operators. A parallel trend we see is the proliferation of laptops over their immobile desktop counterparts, thus arising the need to break free from wires. Wi-Fi, although not extremely popular in India yet, has been one solution to this need. But you still can't find a Wi-Fi network at most places you go. And even if you do, thanks to its unethical use by terrorists in recent times, it's hard to find a free one that's easy to connect to.
The answer to true wire-free mobile internet access lies with the country's cell-phone operators. By using a 'Wireless broadband modem', one could connect to the net wherever there's cell-phone reception. But their initial services offered dial-up grade speeds and frequent disconnections among a few other issues. But now, all that is changing. A majority of operators have upgraded their systems to the latest technology, by which you can now actually surf the net at broadband speeds while on the move.
Now that we have a fair amount of operators providing this service, we set out to find out how well each one performed, especially since most claim to be the best and the fastest." So we have for you, a mobile broadband modem shoot-out where we travelled across the length and breadth of Mumbai city to check how they delivered. We wanted all the operators to participate in this test, and a majority of them did. So here are our contenders:
Tata Photon+
Reliance NetConnect+
MTNL 3G
Virgin Vflash
Idea NetSetter
Airtel NetWarrior
A few others, including MTS and Vodafone, weren't able to send us their units on time for various reasons, and unfortunately could not be part of this shoot-out."
How we tested?
We decided to do synthetic tests from two of the popular online bandwidth testing websites, bandwidthplace.com and speedtest.net. Speedtest.net gauges the speed by connecting to a local server in Mumbai, thus reducing latency. That was followed by a real world download test where we checked the time it took to download the 'Google Talk' setup file. As expected, the initial batch of tests revealed that the results were very unstable. But this is acceptable since this is wireless internet we're talking about, where the medium of data transfer is the air around us and is subject to more interferences as compared to a wired medium.
In order to peg down on more accurate results, we decided to run each of these tests on every wireless device three times. We compiled this data into graphs that you will see in the following pages. The numbers in the graphs are the average of all three figures we got for each test. The tests were done on an MSI X350 laptop.
We set out to key locations in Mumbai, including Borivali, Malad, Andheri, Dadar, Churchgate and Vashi. These were stationary locations; places where people could typically use these devices (like shopping malls, coffee shops etc.). Lastly, in order to check their performance in motion, we also tested them in Mumbai's Western Railway trains."
What technology do they work on?
Tata Photon+, Reliance NetConnect+ and Virgin Vflash use a telecommunication standard called EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized), which is an evolutionary standard of the CDMA platform. The theoretical download rate for this technology is 3.1 Mbps. That's 3.1 Mega-bits per second, which is equal to 0.39 Mega-bytes (MB/s) per second. So the maximum you can theoretically draw out from of such a connection is close to 400 KB/s. Upload speeds for EV-DO max out at 1.8 Mbps.
MTNL (and BSNL in the rest of India except Delhi and Mumbai), uses 3rd generation (3G) GSM technology code-named HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access). The current download speeds supported by their network is up to 3.6 Mbps. The other players, namely Idea and Airtel, who are still in the process of getting their 3G network operational, use the older 2.5G EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) technology. It can support a max download rate of 236.8 kbps.
Note that EV-DO and 3G coverage isn't available in every nook and corner of the country yet. So, their devices fall back to older technologies (CDMA 1x and EDGE, respectively) when there's no high-speed network available. In our testing, we almost never faced this hurdle since we got high-speed networks wherever we tested. So, in case you have unfortunately purchased such a device only to find out that there's no such coverage in your area, the best you can do is pray -- first, to all the gods and then to your service provider, so that they eventually get your area covered.

Hey Dude,
Yes, I am using Tikona since Nov 2009 and it has worked well foor me.I am located in Navi Mumbai.
GOOD:
Low Cost.
No Modem Rental.
24*7 Tech Support with All India Toll Free No.
Can connect 4 PC's at the same time. Its great from me as I have a laptop and Desktop and I can use both together.
Good Speeds upto 2 mbps - depends on the plan you choose.
Cost efffective plans. I am using 300 kbps - Unlimited for 650/- month.
Performance: I download a 700 mb movie in approx 5 hours.
BAD:
Speeds vary with teh increase of distance from Access Point.
I had issues with speed earlier as the nearest Access Point was ona neighbouring building. One multiple complains, they installed a access point on our building and its been smoooth sailing ever since.
Sales staff that visit you, have very little knowledge fo the product and technical features.
you will need to gather these from their Helpline or site.
Overall I am a satisfied consumer.
Ciao!!
Why would you want to use Tikona's service? You would get wireless access and along with it all
the accompanying disadvantages of wireless access. Tikona's modem/router has to be at a fixed
location and this service isn't what you would expect from a Tata Photon or Reliance Net Connect.
In this case you could settle for MTNL's Triband - wired broadband access upto the ADSL router.
You can buy your own router, which has wireless link to the laptop/desktop. (There are wireless
models from Linksys, Belkin, Netgear, D-Link for home/SOHO use - all available at around Rs.
2,500.) Two different persons could have simultaneous access to two different devices, ie. laptop
and desktop. This configuration would depend on the router that you select.
MTNL's Triband service is reasonabley good and they now have an unlimited plan for Rs. 450/month.
No, you can't. Since the 3G iPad runs on GSM technology, while the Tata Photon+ is based on CDMA (EV-DO).
You can instead use MTNL/BSNL's 3G service as of today
MTS Mblaze is better than reliance Netconnect+ and Tata Photon+
in banglore ....
this may be the situation because of network congestion .
here is the speed of these services
service down/up-peakTime down/up - offPeakTime
photon+ 70KB/55KB 150KB/120KB
netconnect+ 30KB/40KB 100KB/80KB
Mblaze 210KB/120KB 320KB/150KB
I have used all the three for about a period of 60 days.
I dont want to comment on the customer care of ata & mts but for reliance it is worse.
I will say weather you purchase any service but beware of reliance customer service its really terrible.
every one must first identify there needs vividly..Do u really need mobility..or ur just into it as fad ...remember that wireless BB is and always remain patchy as compared to wired BB..its one of the drawbacks and price u pay for mobilty
so go in for wirless stuff only if u really need it..wired is just fine
within a premises.u can use BSNL dataone thro a simple WIFI router very well..unlimited users
i have data one home combo 55 plan at my place..day time dayta 1536 mb pm
and night 2 am to 8 am free..so i setup my downoads bewfore i sleep..set alarm at 2 10..wake up for a couple of mins..start downloads..and set alarm at 6 30 again..i have downloaded up to 2 GB in one nit easily..and have seen speeds touch 300 kbps actual download some nights
no wirelss stuff can come even close..tried BSNL evdo..way way to patchy..and erratic..others say Tata photon is best among the worst..and reliance is no 2
never heard ne good words abt GSM 3G services from BSNL..virgin i have no idea
banagalore folks can try Railtel.heard its tolerable
so guys..WIRED is the way to go..clubbed with WIFI
good luck
Great article and very informative indeed. We have got BSNL 3G right from day one in ORISSA and the speed is the best. But the tariff for Tata Photon and Reliance netconnect is a bit on the higher side though. Since they actually do not provide great speeds 24*7.
I'd suggest everybody who is not a Youtube freak, to get an EDGE USB MODEM or a handset with EDGE 32 support and pay around 99/- per month to some of the leading operators and enjoy around 1GB/2GB/Unlimited internet at a decent speed of around 20K.
dear sir,
i am having sony vaio laptop with window 7. i want to purchase idea data card. i am in zawar mines 40 km away from udaipur. kindly provide me contact details of idea office in udaipur.
Rohan, What are the ideal minimum "kbps" speeds required today considering everything we access with the streaming audio-video technology becoming norm ? I feel even 256 kbps is NOT enough.
Well, by definition 256 kbps and beyond is called broadband.
I use a 512 kbps line at home, where I get an average download speed of roughly 50 KB/s. But still, Youtube doesn't stream seamlessly; I have to wait for it to buffer just a little. So, I think 768 Kbps and above should handle standard-definition Youtube video. For HD, consider 2 Mbps and above.
i m using Bsnl 3G in varanasi... it is connected at 3.6mbps, my maximum download speed is 386kbps... and i m getting average speed of 250kbps... it is the best speed i hav seen... in india :)
The problem with BSNL isn't the technology but it's profile - it's a government run organisation. Having said that they aren't that bad in Pune at least.
I m using the BSNL EVDO in pune for the last one year, i even tried the other private operators service comparable to the EVDO but the EVDO service offered far superior download speeds and the speed is consistent at all periods of the day. But for some slow response being a public sector, i had no difficulty in getting service and the support set up is quite good in pune. By not increasing the subscribers indiscrimnately (within in available bandwidth) BSNL is acting responsibly unlike private operators who always offer service even if there is no network capacity availble and create hig contention ratio which leads to fluctuations in speed

Thanks for the update. I hope introduction of 3G further reduces the rates for this lot. I faced a few issues with Tata Photon + and was pleasantly surprised by the way they promptly sorted the overbilling matter, albeit with a little bit of follow-up. However, I just checked by logging into my online account and guess what., I am not getting the 'Prepaid Details' in Rupees for some reasons, so all in all there will always be some problems with these services and it is vital that the account user keeps track of the usage. The speeds are pretty much consistent with last readings I gave here. FYI, the usage details are in 'bytes'.
In my view BSNL is best, I get decent speeds, could watch whole ipl match with very few glitches(jus a couple of dem), above all its UNLIMITED FOR 750PM. I stay 6kms away from the nearest EVDO enabled tower, may be an air distance of 1-2kms,not sure, still i get speeds around 1Mbps on average, thats pretty good.
If u use reliance don't use even a single MB in excess, else u'll face the music of false billing. It happened to my friend for 3 months straight! I disconnected the connection the first time it happened to me,didn't wanna take a risk in the nxt bill.
Hey, I had posted a detailed discussion about my experiences with various cards in your poll. Where is that? Why don't you just link that here too??!!!

Excellent piece of work. Helps put wireless 'broadband' in perspective. Can we hope for an update where BSNL and the new MTS are also tested. BSNL is relevant as they offer telecom services on a pan India basis.
Tata Photon + problem (see below) got resolved. The billing is on track. The rookie at the desk made a mistake , apparently. So far so good ... with TP+.
Actually BSNL has recently come out with an EVDO wireless modem. It would have been good to include that as well since we know outside the major cities, BSNL and probably Reliance would be logical choices to consider. And since the only reason a person would have an additional wireless connection is when it has decent coverage while travelling. We suspected that EVDO was good ,well now we are sure.
Not recently, it has been around for long and I think they're the only ones offering unlimited plans, but I would be still reluctant switching because as long as it's running, it's perfect. The moment some tech issue arises, you're in for some hard time.
True comparison tests would have been if the same were carried out in different parts of the country. Different parts of Mumbai do not give a good random sample do they? Hence the review is excellent, but only for those living within Mumbai.
Come on techtree guys get out of the comforts of Mumbai and be out in the fields. You got to get your hands dirty to do a real good job.
Its just a waste if these broad band service work only in Cities. No Unlimited Plans. In the USA one can get 3 Mpbs wireless broad band Unlimited all over the 50 States.
6 mbps Fixed Unlimited Broad Band only for 35 to 40 USD in the USA. In India petty poor kbps speeds for 1000's and bucks. Shame Shame . Hell Hell.
Ever You know BSNL EVDO unlimited plan for Rs550/-? although I am living outside of 5 K.m further from the BTS, I am having 50KBps(please understand it is not Kbps) to 60KBps average and already crossed 29GB download in my previous month. Although BSNL is using EVDO rev-0 which is capable of only 2.4 Mbps, where the Reliance and Tata photon using EVDO REv-A it is spread over rest of the country.. Don't think only Mumbai or Delhi is India.. there are still million peoples out there called Indian
Tata Photon + Billing Problem - BIG DISAPPOINTMENT:
Its been three instances that I used my brand new Tata Photon + and the balance has already disappeared. I've compained after explaining to Tata Indicom that I used it to manually download a pending XP update on my netbook (70 MB approx) and checked a few emails (20 MB approx) ... and perhaps a 3 MB Anti-Virus Update .. My 250 MB (Rs.200 = 250MB package) balance has gone already. HOW I DON'T KNOW and I am still NOT getting a clear cut explanation from Tata. So much for the short lived excitement of seeking wireless high speed broadband.
I then checked their forum and wrongful billing seems to be a norm for Tata Photon +. They haven't even reverted with my Tata Indicom Account No. for some reason - this is required for checking usage online - & now I am very suspicious of their service - that too within a day of subscribing.
Watch out people - keep track of your usage otherwise IT'LL BE A RIP-OFF FROM TATA PHOTON +. There are no answers from Tata Photon +, nor does the toll free no. (1800266121) work and its a big disappointment.
Now my point is which service is actually reliable ???? None comes to mind so my advice is simple: Take up a Pre-Paid service first, get your account details in order to login and check usage, recharge with bare minimum amount and check usage immediately online.
Is it possible to switch the provider? Can we sell our USB modem. I am using Relaince and it sucks. My 512 Kbps DSL is 10 time faster that Reliance 3.1 MB.
Customer support also sucks, they use all the jargons of networking world thinking user knows nothing...
Excellent Review, we need such reviews to help us get the right product.
I would like the team of Techtree to update there earlier reviews on different products.
Thanks Rohan for the reply & second that point on demo. I subscribed to Pre-paid Tata Photon + service today. An introductory offer of Rs.2398 for Activation and USB Modem (comes with USB Wire & has a slot for Micro SD card within the modem).
Rohan, Here's a report for Tata Photon + in my area in Pune: SPEEDTEST: 193.8 Kbps Download ; 79.36 Kbps Upload . BANDWIDTH PLACE: 183.7 Kbps Download speeds ; 57.5 Kbps Upload speeds . SPEEDTEST PING: 90 ms . GTALK SETUP DOWNLOAD (1.53MB File): 13 seconds. The demo & service was quite prompt as well from Tata Indicom. I think the speeds are satisfactory but do give us your opinion & rating on the test results.
Those seem to be pretty good speeds. That's a really good point prithvi. I would also urge all potential buyers of wireless data cards to insist for a demonstration at the place where they're going to use it the most.
That was thorough Rohan. Great work !! I am from Pune and I just came back from Tata Indicom's Hub @ F.C. Road today after enquiring about their prepaid & postpaid service which is launched freshly from March 1st. I was so looking forward to a report like this to confirm which service I needed to subscribe to. The timing couldn't be better.
After reading this report am quite okay with Tata Photon + although I've asked for a demo from the guys at Tata at my location before I pay 'em. Thankfully they agreed. So lets see how the speed/performance fares tomorrow. I'll leave a note here. Out of curiosity, when can you do a similar location-cum-mobility based study for PUNE ??
Thank you all for your generous comments. This was the first time we did something like this; so initially we tried with mumbai. If all goes well, maybe in the future we can increase the scope to other metros as well.
Will keep you posted if such plans are rolled out. Cheers!
very informative review Rohan!! good job!! but what about the central side of mumbai? thane, dombivali and kalyan? if only you could have covered these areas too...
mere download rates and coverage is just part of puzzle, the reviewer should also evaluate ease of installation and after sales support and upfront cost of various wireless otions
This was a really excellent review. The detail of the review process presented is absolutely one of the best. Keep it up TT. You will have more eyeballs coming to your site.
An Excellent review really TT! Awesome work keep it up!!
To sum things up you can't go wrong with Tata & Reliance. Virgin could be the dark horse - area dependent.
Shame though none of these offer unlimited plans!
MTNL wow what a garbage company....their triband also sucks big time I'm thinking of getting rid of it pathetic speeds.
Other people - Yeah this is a Mumbai centric review TT is in Mumbai so shut your hole up & just read haha
Very informative review. This is what a review should be put the facts in front of the readers and let them decide what's best for them by making an informed decision.
that's indeed a good review at least people now can refer to this review before making up their minds. and I do agree Naina Iyer that the Virgin device is much better. Good job Rohan.
I dont get it.. why do these ppl have to be so diplomatic all the time.... why can't these reviewers jus say even amongst the top 3.. which is better n which is not... so what if they are wrong.. it's jus a bllody review.. and thats in their opinion.. and the ppl reading can then decide what they want... and the same is the case with so many other reviews for indian products that go around.. like cars/bikes etc etc... i dont get it..
I don't think i was being diplomatic in any way. It was impossible to choose between the top three since some were better in different areas than others.
So we suggested the readers to go ahead and choose any one from those three.
I guess that's the reason they went to all the lengths to compare these services and give you those informative graphs...if you cared enough to see them. Make an informed decision dude.
BTW, if some reviewer says you'll become a millionaire if you jump from the tenth story of your bldg, will you do it? You should, considering that you said- doesn't matter even if they are wrong!!!
P.S.: Nice review BTW.
The Photon + & the Virgin Device operate on the same Platform (network)- The speeds on both these devices are similar. Though the features offered on the Virgin device is superior - it also has an 8 GB upgradable Memory SD slot
