Today, at Bangalore, India's first local Internet search engine was launched named, guruji.com.
In a press meet organized in Bangalore today, India's first local Internet search engine was launched named, guruji.com. guruji is being backed by Sequoia Capital India and is aimed at the Indian web consumer.
guruji.com is focused on providing better search results to Indian consumers, by leveraging proprietary algorithms and data in the Indian context. Reportedly, the company has assembled a farm of servers to index the entire universe of Indian websites and is using propriety algorithms to go deep into the Indian Internet domain and fetch locally relevant results to search queries of Indian consumers.
Two young entrepreneurs, Anurag Dod and Gaurav Mishra, ex-IIT Delhi alumni with significant Internet and search experience have started guruji.com, after Sequoia Capital India provided seed funding to the venture. This is the first and only company in the Indian Internet search space to be backed by a leading venture capital firm. Sequoia Capital is a pioneering investor in several leading Internet businesses globally including Google, Yahoo, Paypal, and Youtube.
Guruji is a neat idea. It is high time we throw out the global internet patroller Google. We honestly don't need Google to tell us about India and its facts/culture. I would rather have a 100% swadeshi search engine cater to our Indian searches. It is high time each one of us shifts to guruji for our india searches. My only hope is that after a while, guruji does not sell itself to Google, who has a penchant for buying out any competitors to remain the indisputed search engine.

This is neat work. City search is really impressive. I do not agree with the guys about the UI. The UI is neat and very Indian color-scheme. Minimal yet functional

I wanted search for some geological maps for the south states. The search was really good and wonderfull. It helped me a lot. Keep the good work going and mark your presence in the market soon.

i gave a search and it came up with 6 pages of results...but none of the pages beyond 3 work!!...really lame!!! this is not a beta version...this is more of an alpha!!!

addition: when u click search, it cleans up the search textbox and you have to write the search string again if you want to search a modified string again. I understand its abeta version, but such silly mistakes must be taken care of.

a local search engine is a good idea, but obviously it will search the data from internet only, which other sites are also doing anyway. GUI is very silly.. stupid color scheme. Basic search rules doesnt work, for eg even if you type something in "quotes" it will show results as per its own stupid AI. I compared results with google, and its showing only half the relevant links.

Its not competition for Google....no way!..GOOGLE is a global thing! ...and its no point comparing... yea...it surely can give GOOGLE (INDIA) competition coz its what every indian has wanted for a very long time...A local search engine which gives information that matters to his/her place of residence....

good effort.i hope they spend the money on building the content.its not an easy job to compete with google unless the search is really comprehensive and highly relavent.
