Corsair Flash Voyager 2 GB

Corsair Flash Voyager 2 GB

Ameya Dalvi, Mar 09, 2006 1714 hrs IST

This is by far the fastest flash memory drive we have got our hands on.

Superlative performance, Sturdy build quality, Water/Dust/Shock resistant, Compact and Cool.

Expensive, Its rubber body gathers dust and lint.

That's about beauty; now over to brains and brawn. Talking of performance, this is by far the fastest flash memory drive we have got our hands on. It was at least 50% faster than the fastest drive we had tested thus far. That is a huge leap.

Single file Write 8.6 MBps
Single file Read: 16.9 MBps

Buffered Write: 3.1 MBps
Buffered Read: 15.1 MBps

A sequential read and write time of 16.9 MBps and 8.6 MBps respectively is seriously impressive and so is the buffered read speed of 15.1 MBps. Understandably there is a drop in performance when it comes to buffered write as these flash memory drives do not have a physical write buffer. But the overall performance of the drive is excellent and even SiSoft SANDRA 2005 confirms the same with a drive index of 14.

The Corsair Flash Voyager 2 GB drive is available for a street price of Rs. 7,000 which is a bit steep. And considering the fact that we get a 2 GB Transcend for Rs. 4,500, it sure is steep. But that doesn't take away its performance which is the best I have come across till date. Also, the Transcend has a 2-year warranty while the Corsair has a cover for 3 years from the distributor and 10 years over all from the company (as mentioned on the box). Honestly 3 years is more than sufficient because going by the rapid advancements in storage technology, three years down the line, a capacity of 2 GB might command only as much respect as a floppy does today.

Coming back to the present, buy the Corsair drive if performance and sturdiness is what you seek. If you are just looking for 2 GB capacity in a tiny package and don't mind waiting for a few extra minutes for the data to transfer, then Transcend would suit you better.

Hi I bought a 2 Gb Corsair Voyager Flash last November from US. There seems to be some loose connection in the USB pin. I believe this problem arises due to the fact that the body is flexible. Can anyone pls direct me to a place where this can be fixed in Chennai

Hi! I brought a 1GB Corsair Voyager Flash last december from US. Last month, the USB pin cameout of its body and it had become unusable. It has a 10-year warrenty, but I don't know where to get it repaired in Bangalore. I am grateful for anybody providing information on this. Thanks.

i think this is good in appearence but not sure whether it can withstand dust and shock the rubber might comeout for sure if used roughly my advice is to wait a while so a number of such things come out and finally improve in quality and cost :-)

First you say "its entire outer shell is made of rubber that makes this product 'dust', water and shock 'resistant'." Then you say ," The only flip side to this is that it gathers a lot of 'dust' and lint." Wot exactly do these mean?

by h1tm4n, New Delhi, on Mar 13, 2006 06:56 PM, Report abuse   Reply

A beautiful piece i must say. I have been eyeing this since i saw this piece with the Corsair distributor in Hyderabad. Unfortunately buying such 'piece de' resistance' is not an option in India. Buying it from the US makes much more sense!

There is nothing very great about this just another USB 2 flash frive-comparable to nemerous others in market. At 7000 Rs, this drive is lootery of Indian public- very much available for US $ 80 ( Rs. 3600) in any comp mart in USA (probably cheaper in HK, Sing ), just ask a friend or relative to bring it in!!

If USB 2.0 is a "standard", then anything should work at the same speed, right? If it has internal processor, speeds would differ from product to product, but this is just a USB 2.0 chip...how come there is a 50% speed difference..???

by Chandra, Chennai, on Mar 09, 2006 09:30 PM, Report abuse   Reply

nope - your mouse will support USB2.0, but it will NEVER transfer 480Mbit/s which is the USB2.0 speed. This transfer-speed however is just an upper border, nowerdays you get offered a 300MB/s SATA-II Drive, but the drives themselfs are only capable of achieving as much as 50-90MB/s read/write performance. That's simply hard-ware dependend, whereas the other (USB2.0) is basically a hardware based protocoll. That means: cheaper and low performance Chips (Memorychips in this case) will have much less then the maximum of 60MB/s (derived from the 480Mbit/s (Mbps)) whereas the high-quality and tuned or just high-performance Corsair chips can move some more data in the same time...

Quite frankly, this comment is for protest at introducing the "Type the characters you see in the picture below" introduced today. If I have to wait and do additional work, then for sure my commenting will reduce drastically. Perhaps that is the aim???:-)

Hi Pal, This system was introduced to counter some message spamming that was happening lately. However, if you are a registered user and logged in, you won't have to enter those characters. In fact, you don't even have to input your personal details. It will be done automatically.

Nice, but very much on the expensive side. Has the rubber body cover made the price go up so much?
