Mind Over Matter

How about using your brain signals to control computers?

A couple of days back, I happened to stumble upon a video article about using your brain signals to control computers. No, I haven't been reading sci-fi, nor have I been glued to Terminator 3; in fact, I don't like either. But, it's true and it hit me in the face and left me feeling like I was in the Twilight Zone for a long time.

The company I am talking about here is NeuroSky. Based in California, USA, these little devils have come up with a method/technology that can read and convert your brain waves into commands for electronic devices. For example, you can now play a game, or use a mechanical instrument, things like that, using nothing but your thoughts. And here comes the best part, it will increase the cost of the devices by only US $15 (Rs.600 approx). Hmm interesting, I say.

The concept, though simple, is a little difficult to implement as it varies from human to human and depends on the person's concentration level and other attributes. But, heaping laurels on the people at NeuroSky is not the real purpose of this article, nor do I want to talk about some mind control mumbo jumbo, no way.

The reason why I'm taking time off from my reviews to pen this article is to talk about the endless possibilities, and the effect it will have on us (read humans, for now).

Think about a day when you get up in the morning and you want some strong brewed coffee, and there goes your coffee machine into action. You want your shirt ironed and you have it. Forget your iron, the shirt might just iron itself. The list is endless, or rather restricted only by the limit of individual creativity. For now, all these things are only in thought, but I am sure it won't take long before these things become reality and make their way into our lives.

Obviously, these things are meant to considerably improve the quality of our lives, but will they really?

For all you know, I might just stop using my keyboard (in effect, my fingers) to write reviews. I'd rather 'think and think' than 'think and write,' but they will get written. This is of course, applicable to all and sundry. Eventually, we might have an army of couch, chair, and bed potatoes; maybe even more types of potatoes will be coined. Even with such an enormous boost in our quality of lives, we'll have cases of under developed hands, feet or even brains, just because we won't be using them as much as we used to.

For now, use your brain and let your imagination run wild, and then use your hands and keyboard to let us know about your thoughts on the same.

Well the idea of simply having text on the screen is a surely a fantastic idea, till your boss is one hot chick and your mind wanders off somewhere else when she is watching you "Thinking and typing". I for once would prefer not having such technologies. Hope you get the point

why isnt the article mentioned in Mind over Matter changed. The same article is being reflected here from the time i have registered at techtree. i guess its been almost 3-4 months now.Kindly change the article or remove the mentioned column from here itself. This potraits an image of irresponsibility for non-maintenance and not updating the site. This keeps in doubt whether the articles posted out here are in line with the updates of the outside world

Many ideas about weapons, satellites, and advanced vehicles have come into inventors mind by sci-fi movies like start wars. Even idea of cell phone came in mind of Motorola engineer when he saw sci-fi movie. The idea of cell phones, satellites and many advanced technologies would look foolish if you had taught before few decades, as there was nothing to support these ideas. Is it impossible to make creatures which are much stronger or strange than which are on earth by using genetic engineering? Answer is yes. Who could have thought this in 16th or 17th century? In fact Sudeep?s idea is not impractical. Think of human body as biomechanical electrical machine created by nature. In which brain functions as computer, processes all the data; depending on patterns stored, experience and analytical power it takes decisions. Sends electrical signals to the rotary organs, millions of cells in the organ burn fuel to produce energy and do the movement. Is it impossible to create cyborg if dead body?s brain is replaced by microchip which produces same signals as brain; then human body must respond & do the movement. Haven?t you heard mice are controlled by chips? The only thing in Sudeep?s idea is to track the brain signal & interpret them. In fact it won?t be a great idea after few years; who might have thought of remote controlled machines which operate on signals, before few decades. You would be fool if you had taught operating a machine from distant place without even touching it. Idea of the author is only like brain as a remote control and other devices as a machine. And now about endless applications; just think how much will it help to people like Stephen Hawking and from them to whole society. Simply, just like cell phone is not only for making calls but also it can be used for access to internet, money transfer and vehicles are not only for traveling. Same way these technologies won?t have limited applications.

Rather than looking at it selishly from the perspective of an able-bodied person who can very well use his hands and legs, think what it could do to improve the quality of life for paraplegics and quadriplegics. Think of those who can think but cannot move or communicate. If you do want to move into esoteric territory think of how we can fingure what a baby needs or even what the dog needs.

Yes Emil i do agree with your argument.Your perfectly right, technology must grow in such a way that it should help them who are genious in mind but cannot do things due to there drawbacks, so the technology should help them to explore there knowledge and overcome there disability. The idea of developing a technology like Mind Over Matter is wonderful but if it reaches a common man, human beings become lazy. There is a great quote "Donot feed a fish teach it how to swim and how to get the meal".I am really sorry after reading replies from different people, donot comment unnecessary or which look ackward this is a stage to share knowledge, so i request that present the views in a more degnified way and try to improve our knowledge and do something good to our society. Thanks to all

Why do you view this development from the perspective of a able-bodied but essentially lazy individual like you? Think instead what it can do for those who cannot speak or use their limbs to work or communicate. Think paraplegics, quadriplegics. Or those who are paralyzed. Wouldn't this enhance their quality of life? If you do want to think esoteric applications, think how it will be possible for a baby to communicate to the mother what it wants. Or even how the house pet could communicate needs.

Although I generally do not like to think in such callous terms but consider the mainstream applications for this technology. And anyways, even the physically/mentally challenged or autists will be able to use the devices that will feature this technology. The example in the article is just that; an example. One of many many more that could not have possibly fit on even ten pages. Also, the author mentions that applications for this tech is limited only by your creativity. So I'm sure SOMEONE will definitely think about using it for people challenged by physical/mental anomalies. LOL pets with headsets would look funny.

@Rahul Shetty - I am not sure I understand what you're trying to say. What "callous terms" are you referring to? I did not intend to talk about all the possible applications, nor was I critical of Sudeep for failing to point them out. My grouse was because Sudeep has displayed a total self-centred approach when giving examples.

By the way I'm glad that Pocket Musicology has finally lost its place of prominence on the home page after months of hanging there looking stupid.

And before the Bajaj fanbois pounce on me, let me hereby declare that she definitely looks better than Sudeep. I am only referring to her article, not her. :)
