Just a few months back, some of my friends were recruited by IT bigwigs

Just a few months back, some of my friends were recruited by IT bigwigs like Infosys and TCS through campus interviews. Needless to say, these guys recently completed their engineering degree from the top colleges in Mumbai. Yes, I know that this happens every year, but what baffles me is that none of these guys hail from an IT background and their job involves hardcore coding. And each of these guys consciously chose to stay away from Computer or IT Engineering four years back because they believed that their interests lay in other engineering streams.

Of the four guys in the picture, two have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, one in Electrical and one in Electronics. Three of them are still undergoing training in their respective companies, which one of the above guys describes as an extra semester. Everyone was over the moon when they got their dream placements and we partied hard, but things seem to be slightly different now.

The first guy wants to be a part of his high profile company, but is struggling to come to terms with coding. The second has managed to adjust well in this new unfamiliar territory, but still wonders if it's the right job for him. The third feels he should be putting to use what he learnt in his engineering college, but unfortunately his company doesn't deal in that type of work. He is even thinking of switching jobs. The fourth has completely contrasting views to the third guy. He believes that coding is the best thing that has happened to him in years and he should have chosen IT as the stream four years back rather than slogging his butt off in the Mechanical workshops.

They may have different views, but the one point they all agree on is that what they have studied and what they are doing right now are two completely different things. Now, I have absolutely nothing against coding or people getting into something different or changing professions, but the rate at which students from professional courses are doing the switch, does raise a few questions.

Companies like Infosys are known to recruit toppers from most streams of engineering. And often, you have guys from different streams working on a common project after the training period. The same goes for TCS, iFlex and others. Doesn't that make engineering just a degree that earns one a pass to these companies rather than a knowledge-based course?

Another question I have in my mind is that do these companies actually need the best engineers to develop commercial applications? Is it right to hire the best from one field and make him do something completely different? Isn't it similar to making the best hockey player in the country learn and play cricket? I say that because none of the guys I know are actually developing system level software like drivers where your engineering knowledge will come into play. Commercial apps need no engineers.

It is obvious that better pay is the most significant force that makes people sacrifice their favorite work for an alternate profession. But then, everyone is aware of where the money is even before one gets into these professional courses. Or are they? On an average, students are just over 17 years of age when they enroll for engineering. Is 17 too early to choose the path ahead? Or do parents still know best? I don't know. But I guess it's high time we start looking for answers. Solutions, to be more precise.
