Battle of GT's: X800 GT vs 6600 GT - Part 1

Punit Lodaya, Feb 16, 2006 2006 hrs IST

With the gaming scene heating up, we thought of analyzing two of the most popular mainstream cards in the market

Next Page

Test Bench
As we mentioned before, we decided to start on a new test machine. The configuration of the test machine is as follows

AMD Athlon 3500+ (S939)
Asus A8N-E Motherboard
Transcend 512*2 DDR 400 RAM (2.5 3 3 7)
Hitachi 80GB 7200 RPM HDD
Powersafe 400W SMPS

We will be using this test bench for all the PCI-E cards that we will be testing in the near future.

Classification and Benchmarks

Now, this was one tricky area. We had to go through several options before selecting the final lot. The problem of selecting benchmarks these days is that every benchmark seems to be optimized for either ATI or NVIDIA cards. For eg, Nvidia cards seem to give better performance in OpenGL based games, where as ATI cards gives better performance in Direct3D games. Also, benchmarks such 3DMark 2006 and Quake 4 simply annihilate the low end cards. These benchmarks are not scalable and hence we do not get a perfect picture. Hence, we decided to divide the cards into three sections - low end cards, mid end cards and high end cards.

Low End Cards
We run all the benchmarks on all the cards, but then comes the question of scalability. In order to solve this problem, we decided to run the low end cards mostly in 800*600 and 1024*768 resolution. Also, we plan to tone down on certain special effects such as soft shadows, as they seem to simply kill the low end cards. In short, we will try to simulate the actual gaming setups for these cards which will remain consistent for all the cards in this category.

Midrange Cards
This is the category to which the cards we are talking about today belong. Descent Performance along with a good price is what attracts consumers. However, even these midrange cards have their limitations. Hence, we decided to run the benchmarks in resolution such as 1024*768 and 1280*1024. Anything beyond that resolution will require you to get a 19" monitor and if you really want to experience anything on a 19 incher at the max resolution, then only high end cards will be able to satisfy you.

High End Cards
The dream of every gamer. They simply boast of all the latest and greatest technology and no test seem to break them down. Only the competition seems to pose some worry. And the competition is stiff and so are our benchmarks that we have chosen for these elite pieces of hardware. 1280*1024 and 1600*1200 are the resolutions at which we plan to run the tests on these monsters.

Get a new SPMS of atleast 450W. A powersafe 450W is a good powersupply. Get it and u can run all your games. Your problem is the GPU not getting enough power.

BIG ????? god knows about this company where XFX is more readily available...

by Anonymous, noida, on Feb 16, 2006 09:26 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Big Byte who were also selling XFX brand have started BIG brand because they faced lot of quality problems with XFX brand cards. Also I have heard from one of their sales person that XFX used fake and remarked memory to cut costs for lower price but end user got a raw deal. I guess better be careful before buying XFX.

I have a XFX Geforce 6200 256MB card and its working fine. I was able to play NFSMW at 800x600 high quality,Doom3 800x600 high quality Quake 4 (640x480 medium ) Farcry (1024x768 high) Specs Celeron 2.4 Ghz 512MB 400 MHZ DDR RAM INTEL 865GBF

in terms of availaibility BIG fall short behind XFX, but quality is comparable and reliable as XFX cards do.

Spefication comparison are all wrong: there is nothing listed by name of X800GT of 128Mb, X800GT is 256Mb card. Correct name for 128Mb card is X800GTO. specs for X800GT: Memory & Bus Width 256 MB DDR3 256 bit Core Speed 475 MHz Memory Speed 980MHz. Pixel pipelines 8 and for X800GTO is Memory & Bus Width 128 MB DDR 256 bit Core Speed 400 MHz Memory Speed 700MHz Pixel pipelines 12 Not able to find "BIG" homepage

by puneett, Noida, on Feb 17, 2006 12:50 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Better go for X800GTO, and be ready to pay Rs.15,500 for it, but the performance is great for that price. X800GT/6600GT are not gonna survive more than 6/8 months,as games like FEAR and more are like to appear soon. I currently have XFX6600GT, its good yet, played Doom3 recently, was great experience at 1024/768 with effects set at medium, but at more resolution it was crying. So friends X800GTO/XL would be a better choice, afterall gamers are a different breed who bother to expand any amount for thy pleasure/performance.

while viewing my comment i noticed another mistake, the x800gt has 256 mb memory, not 128 mb. the 128 mb version runs at 700 mhz ddr1. punit do u know anything at all?

by hunt3r, Bangalore, on Feb 17, 2006 01:13 AM, Report abuse   Reply

oh and i also noticed, fabrication process is nanometre not millimetre... that said if the x800 gt is based on r480 core it could be 0.11 um as well

by hunt3r, Bangalore, on Feb 17, 2006 01:10 AM, Report abuse   Reply

dosent the 6600 gt have only three vertex shaders?
